Has the MAC rated as the #12 conference nationally (out of 32 conferences + independents). Describes MAC as, "Grown-man league always has teams that are old and tough."

Predicts Ohio to finish fifth in the conference, behind Toledo, Kent State, Akron, and Ball State (in that order).

Interestingly, has Eastern Michigan pegged to finish seventh, despite the addition of Emoni Bates. Personally, I'm super interested to watch some Eastern Michigan games to see what Bates and Farrakhan can do together.

Predicts Sincere Carry as the POY (no surprise there, really).

Predicts Dwight Wilson III as a second team all-conference player.

Predicted first-team all conference of Bates, Carry, Freeman, Shumate, and SParks.

12 would put the MAC back in probably its most expected slot behind the P5, BE, American, MWC, A10, WCC, and MVC (I'd guess those are the 11 the MAC is behind Could be ahead of 1 or 2 of those and behind CUSA, Sunbelt, Colonial or Southern?). After what the MAC did in non-conference play last season, getting back to #12 would feel like a win for the conference as a whole.

I was expecting Ohio to be predicted 4th. Losing Sears, BVP, and Carter all at once is tough, they basically were last years team, but being behind BSU is, I expect, somewhat unexpected by most of us.

Typically, all-MAC teams are dominated by short to mid-size guards. Seeing a shift recently to bigs with Sparks, Freeman and Shumate - all 5s or stretch 4s. Plus Bates, a tall wing player.

I would take 5th with the roster turnover we had. I trust Boals will get the most out of the roster. We lost a lot and will take time. Hope DWIII returns to form at the 5. The power forward spot hard to replace BVP. Point guard too big shoes to fill after the years Preston and Sears gave us last couple seasons. In time we will be fine. Nice recruiting class Boals landed. Such an unknown with this roster. Guess we shall see how long the roster takes to gel.

I agree. And if we end up in that 4-5 spot come Cleveland, who knows?

I agree how it gels is the key here, but I’m a little more optimistic about the roster in general. Strong mid-majors have a lot of upperclassmen/experience and I think we have a nice blend of that with DW3, Baker, Miles, BRod, Gabe, and Jaylin. Add in the talented freshman group and sophomores I think it can be a pretty deep and athletic team.

Speaking of previews of men's MAC basketball, I listened to the Three Man Weave’s Mid-major take on our league. They brought up Akron, Kent and Toledo as the top 3. Then they quickly mentioned Ohio and Buffalo as possible dark horse contenders. Sadly, they really didn’t delve much deeper than that. The last thing they mentioned was how beautiful the Miami campus is. C’mon! I was hoping for a bit brighter outlook especially considering one of the guys spoke personally to Coach Boals. Hoping Coach is just underselling our prospects to lower the pressure. Personally, my super quick take is that if we get some improved play specifically from the 3 spot, we will be tough to beat…

I will probably buy The Almanac and share a peak into it’s deeper analysis when it comes out…

Go Bobcats!

Actually, in an eight-team tourney (I presume it's still eight teams), fourth is the same as fifth. You play the same team in the opening round no matter what and get the 1/8 winner in the semis. It only makes a difference if the they go back to 12 teams and #5 has to host a campus game.

Let's look at what we KNOW we'll get this year:
1. DW3 will get post touches and power his way to at least 12 and 7 a night.
2. Chemistry will be tough at first but Boals has shown a penchant for getting his players connected.
3. We have more depth than we've had in the past several years. We have experienced guys in DW3, Hunter, Baker, Wiznitzer, Miles, B-Rod and Clayton. DW3, Miles and B-Rod have been to an NCAA. Hunter has played at a high level in a conference at least on par, if not better, than ours. Hunter has scored at a high level and Wiznitzer has spent time in the ACC. AJ played valuable minutes.
4. Our freshman class is special. All of them appeared to make some plays in the summer. It's hard to know what they'll bring but I really think we got a steal in A.J. Brown. I think he will be huge for this team with his defense and offense.
5. When was the last time our 12th and 13th guys were capable of playing time? Whether it's the freshmen or IJ or Adelodun, those guys can all give minutes.

I'd predict that AJ Clayton makes a first or second team this year. I think he's going to have a monster season.

I have this feeling as well. I think his recruiting was a consummate example of the "under the radar" signing. Reminds me of some of the signings that Gentleman Jim used to do of relatively local kids who were overlooked and turned out to be real stars, such as the legendary pair of starting guards on the Elite 8 team -- Jerry Jackson and Chad Gill -- both from the Village of Corning in Perry County.

Here's a link to an article about Charlie and his reaction to the 2012 tournament run, it mentions Jerry as well:

I don't think Clayton was under the radar. He was well known around the state of Ohio due to his summer basketball team.

Well, he was a 2-star recruit. The B1G, ACC and SEC weren’t exactly beating down his doors.

He had interest and offers from other mid majors. He considered delaying committing to Ohio to see if he would get high major offers, but as you know he ended up committing early to Ohio. I think if you're getting MAC and Horizon offers that means you're not under the radar like the Coach Snyder recruits you mentioned. As you know, recruiting is a radically different game in the 2020s than it was in the 1960s. Back then, you could have big time talent that got overlooked in recruiting. That rarely happens today.

I love having AJ on the team and think he's a solid player. I think he needs to get more aggressive/assertive on the court if that kind of season is going to happen.

I agree it's rarer today than it was then, and it's harder to find guys who are under-rated but with great potential. But, it still happens. Virtually everyone is ranked in some way or the other now, but some guys who are ranked a one or two star have the potential to be a three, four or even five star guy. So, today, "under the radar" has a different meaning than in the 1960s. It doesn't mean they are totally unnoticed, but it means that the rating services and the big-time coaches aren't paying much attention to the recruit. So, a Snyder-type recruiter today can gauge the potential of a recruit that others are missing and get in on the ground floor with the recruit and make an early offer. It was said that once Snyder got into the recruit's living room the deal was usually as good as done. Perhaps, Boals has that same knack for spotting the under-valued recruit with great potential and closing the deal early. I don't know yet if that's true, but my instincts tell me that the Clayton signing might prove to be evidence that he does. Time will tell if that's true or not.

The Almanac is in and we are listed as 4th behind the three obvious teams. No ALL MAC 1st or 2nd team players from Ohio.

Like Lindy's, it's nice to have all the teams info together with the authors observations. It will make it easy to check out our opponents for the year. One thing, they did mention that they talked to Coach Boals before the trip to Spain so, there's not very much info on the new guys.

Two takeaways that they listed were the importance of staying healthy, (Duh) and that the ball didn't bounce our way (per ShotQuality.com) considering shot expectancy averages and predicted win totals. Hopefully we get some favorable Convo rim action this season...

There's plenty more info in there so, I would recommend giving it a go!

Actually they were knocking on his door. Remember he committed as a sophomore, re-classified as a senior and graduated a year early. Several coaches and schools were NOT happy when he made this decision. He also played on a team that made the collection of Gary Trent's teammates look like all-stars.

According to 247, he was a three star recruit and top 300 in the nation. According to ESPN, he was a two star recruit. According to his bio at Ohio Bobcats, he was a four-star recruit.

Well, once he signed with the OHIO Bobcats, you'd expect his star rating to go up! wink

Will Emoni Bates even play? The off court activity recently has me wondering.

Agree with you on 1,3,5. Especially on the depth conversation. Gotta think they could easily have ten guys getting regular PT, albeit 6-7 min/game for the last few guys.

#2...Chemistry is tough to gauge, so for that reason alone, I disagree that we "know" anything about that yet.

#4...We *think* our freshmen class is special. I'll agree they're special after we see a few games. I'm excited to see what they can do though. One of the best groups of frosh we've had here in the last 10-15 years.

I've already set 11/12/2022 aside for a whole day of hoops in Athens.

1. OUr depth is over-rated. Based solely on this board's yearly overestimation of OUr depth before fans observe Boals/Phillips/Christian/Groce/TOS settle on a tight rotation of 7/8 players.
