Per Caleb Troop the official statement on the matter is: "I've decided not to play basketball this year for Ohio University for personal reasons and to focus on academics this decision has been made by me and no one else. I feel that it's time for me to move on and pursue life after basketball the coaching staff and team have been good to me during my time here at Ohio University and I wish them all the best. "

Follow @CalebTroop for all the latest updates.

Make no mistake this is as big of a loss as Steve or AB not coming back. Maybe not the scorer that those two are/were but would have filled a huge rebounding need for the team and been a very good low post defender. Announcement comes less than 72 hours from the official start of practice.

I wish Alex all the best as he pursues his future.  Sometimes this requires difficult decisions in order to prioritize goals.  I support Alex in his decision to prioritize other things besides basketball, though we will certainly miss his contributions to our program over the next two years.

so he transferred last year, goes through over a year of practice, then right before the season officially starts and he is declared eligible he decides not to play? something is not adding up here?

If he has an album coming out, I'm not downloading it. just saying.

thanks for tying up a scholarship for two seasons, if your brother sticks it out and lives up to his potential we'll call it even, I guess.

The basketball program has taken on a Bermuda Triangle feel. Once you enter you have no idea what your going to find there. Last year with the suspensions and Horne's defection now Coleman and Kellogg. The AB one and done did not suprise me one bit as I was more shocked he actually stayed and stayed eligible for the year.  What once looked as a strength has turned into a weakness before the first official ball bounced. Hope those freshman recruits are quick learners. This turn of events has left my head spinning. Wow!!

On the same day The Post publishes an article about transfer athletes, nonetheless.

Well, how about the real possibility that he just did not see that much playing time coming his way?

Wow, seriously?  This is getting ridiculous.  I can't imagine PT was a factor at all.  You've got Reggie and DeVaughn starting (presumably) and Alex and Ivo first off the bench in the post.  Disappointing.  What is going wrong here that so many guys want to/have to leave the program?

I know some see this as a massive blow to our team, but I just don't see it.

I'm more then confident Washington and Keely can get it done as the main players down low this year.  Baltic should be able to step in for Keely when Groce wants to pick up the pace.  Jacobs has the height/mobility to provide matchup problems offensively and hopefully will be able to do 1/2 the job KVK did on the many talented centers we saw last year.  Coleman is a disappointing loss because of his potential, but Sayles is absolutely capable of helping on the boards and knows how this offense works (pass that ball around!).  Coop, T-3, and OUr array of freshman guards/forwards will most certainly provide the spark we got from the freshman last year.

Again, Washington is in for a much better year then most are giving him credit for...

Good luck to Alex.  From how this is worded, it sounds like he is simply focusing on academics rather then leaving OU.  Would rather have that then another Stevie Fresh.

It is an unfortunate loss. The team is getitng kind of thin again even before practices begin. I do wish Kellogg well while he moves on in life.

Even if he didn't think he'd play much, why leave now? A lot can happen between now and the beginning of the season. And once the season starts, who knows? No one thought Sayles would play at all last season and look what happened. I'm not suggesting anything sinister is going on, but there seems to be a piece of the story missing here.

Gee Optimist....what's up with all this logical crap.

Can't we have some conspiracy theory stuff.

You're making much too much sense and not focusing on The Chicken Little The Sky Is Fallin mentality of this board.

Are you crazy or what?

Steven Coleman leaving was shocking....But this is very hard to believe.  What is it with this program?  Didn't Horne leave right after last year's "Hardwood Hysteria"?  Are we asking too much of these guys?

It's nothing like that. He said he left for "personal reasons." He has more important things to deal with than basketball.

Does he get to keep his scholarship for the entire year? I'm curious about the timing of this announcement.

You can never have too many big men. Really counting on his defense and rebounding. Good luck Alex, hope things work out.

I would be shocked if this had to do with playing time. The only guys in front of him are Devaughn, Reggie, and Ivo. While RK and IB may look like they have tons of raw talent the fact is they still haven't done all that much. Also AK was going to be a much, much better rebounder than both of those guys, maybe even better than DW. AK was looking at probably 20 minutes a game, possibly more if there are fouls or injuries. We're now down to 3 returning bigs, that's not good.

If we would have beaten Tennessee, AB was ineligible for the next round, as grades were posted and the new quarter was starting.
