Regarding donations, you must get a reality check. Of course most donations go to wherever the institution wants, for whatever it wants. Unless, of course, you give major coin. Then you can dictate where it goes. How much is "major coin"? In this case, I'm not sure. Anybody know the answer? I do know it's not $100, $500 or even a thousand.

Most donations may very well be spent where the university wants to spend it - the term that colleges and universities use is "area of greatest need."  However, your donation, no matter how big or small can be designated to a specific area, scholarship fund, building fund, etc.   It's up to the donor to mark it restricted or unrestricted.  I personally prefer the former category and when I can, that's how I give my money.  That my good man is the reality of giving to colleges and universities.

Well, let's go down the ladder of giving to Ohio University:

I give to Ohio University---okay
I give to the College of Business---okay
I give to the Marketing Department----okay
I tell the Marketing Department to buy pink erasers for the chalkboards----not okay

Agreed giacomo.  No one said anything about how to spend just who/what area/department/sport gets to spend it or in the case of scholarships, which scholarship fund it goes into.

It works nothing like that. Giving is great, however many do want to know what they are helping to fund. There are very specific and worthy projects throughout campus that you can specify your donation go towards.

I guess if you're close enough to know what's going on at any given department, you would be able to earmark for a special project. Most people wouldn't know. A few years ago somebody on this board was advocating a special donation to get letter jackets for everyone.

Every department has special projects. For example right now you could give monies to ICA for training room renovations, weight room equipment, football locker room renovations, sport specific recuriting budgets, IPA, turf replacement, find a project, speak to a coach or representative of your favorite sport or department and ask them what their needs are.

My problem with general donations is they can be used for such things as coaches attending the final four (Tim O'shea), why would I want to support him attending the final four (or any
Coach for that matter)? Or summer school for a SA who did not take care of business in the school year and is now trying to gain eligibility. I love giving, but I my dollars to go to long term benefits for SA's. Just my personal philosophy.

The mail has to go through the university system before it even tastes USPS.  That's the kink in the stream and the core of the delay.

Though I may be the recipient of the BL Dumbass Poster Award, of which I'm duly proud, I do know a thing or two about this subject having done my share of university mailings.  oldkatz has hit the nail on the head here.  I posted a similar message on a similar thread just a few weeks ago, not that any of us ever get redundant on this board.

OCF that was the old days, several departments have their own postage machines and handle their own mailings, and most all departments have P.O. Boxes where they recieve their own official and important mail.

If you notice on the Athletic Departments own literature they use P.O. Box 689. The Ohio University Foundation uses P.O. Box 869, Must of these departments that collect monies, send bills, and time sensitive materials use the USPS.

Agreed. If I would like donations to go specifically toward the IPF, football or basketball programs who would I talk to?

Jim Harris is your guy for this.   But, because these are not going to the bobcat club, they will not count toward seat donation requirements if that makes a difference to you.

Al, you get OBC credit, I cannot speak for credit to seats though. In fact you cannot make a Foundation donation to athletics anymore without the monies going to the OBC.

From the bobcat club brochure and online:

* All donations for seat contributions must be unrestricted gifts (made out to the Ohio Bobcat Club). Gifts made to restricted accounts (sport specific, endowments, etc.) will not count towards seating benefits.

Actually, I would still like to make a donation to help send TOS to the Final Four - is that a valid option?

But you don't have to worry about a seat donation for your seat.

Not sure what you're saying.  Any donation to Performing Arts is totally separate from seat location.  In fact you don't have to get a dime to get front row seats.

Agreed where there is no benefit attached and it's purely a philanthropic gift.  The seat fee isn't in that category although I guess the case could be made that no one is making us sit in those seats and we could buy others that don't require the fee.
