Aaron, I think Al meant players, not coaches/administrators, but very thorough list, you missed Mr. bobcat Mo Banton who graduated from Akron.

Someone tell me what Mcelhaney did to deserve a spot in the Athletics Hall of Fame.

Not trying to be derogatory (yet), but keeping the seat warm for X years shouldn't be a qualification for entry.

His Lichtenberg and Bryant experiments (I think he was in charge of both) were utter disasters.

Did he bring in Grobe?

Love, Mac is a great guy, was well thought of by colleagues, however you have a quality point. I will say this in his defense, he did what President Ping wanted him to do.

No, Mac did not bring in Grobe, Boeh was the AD of record, however had nothing to do with it due to timing, and he never accepted Grobe because of it.

I was in Mac's office once and was stunned to find that it was filled with Duke memorabilia, including a large Duke banner on the wall.  No Ohio banner, mind you...

I wonder if the following could happen.
Suppose he does finish his course study from another university and gets his degree, after all he had only 1 year left.
Being that Ohio does not offer correspondence course study for Gary to finish and get his degree, would the school be willing to evaluate those courses and approve and accept in a effort to receive an Ohio degree? Could this work?
I don't see why not.
Why not do something that will be good for so many reasons.
Hunter stuck his neck out, and had the backing from the school.
Now let's bring this situation to it's rightful conclusion.
We could get some real great press as well.
We could really pump up this thing into a very special night.
Bring back the players & coaches on the team.
Publish some great program w/ a DVD that could be used as a fund raising tool.
It's time to do the right thing.

My .02,

Trent was by far the best basketball player I've ever seen at OU, and possibly the best ever period.

That being said, he could get 8 degrees from Athens and they still wouldn't let him in the HoF IMO. It's a convenient excuse though.

Really?  I worked with him as a student worker one summer.  I think it was after our freshman years.  His nickname was "Elmo" back then.  In his senior year at Ohio he won the national cross country championship, but he graduated from Akron?  I'm not denying that this might be true, but it's the first I've ever heard of it.  He transferred all his Ohio credits there after his senior year and then graduated from Akron?  Maybe he was a very bad student?  How many extra years did he need?  I remember that he was very active with his fraternity at Ohio.  Maybe too much partying?

Banton attended Ohio from 1962 to 1966 - winning a national championship and being named All-American - but he finished his degree at the University of Akron - a step down academically to say the least, but still worthy of our Hall.

I don't think the standard is an Ohio degree. I think it's a 4year degree. Period.

To come back to the weight lifting issue, the lifting is necessary to compete today. Guys from different eras would compete today with no problem. They would do it because they had to and would be just as physical. Wilt- are you kidding me? Had he lifted he would tear Shaq apart, and I'm not so sure he couldn't have anyway.

Without a doubt! If you retired track numbers, he'd be at the top of my list!

As it happens, my own mediocre basketball playing days began when lifting weights was considered foolish for a shooter and unnecessary for any other reason.  By the time I hung 'em up 35 years later everybody, including me, was lifting regularly. Post strength training, I didn't play a lick better (or worse) relatively speaking but the team pictures were much more impressive to be sure.  So does that make me a "better" player as an old man than I was in high school?

No, but like you said everybody was lifting.

You were no longer lifting to be the exception, you were lifting to be the status quo.

Mo finished 44th in '63 (team 29th), National Champ in '64 (team 3rd) and 7th in '65.  It would be hard to find an individual that was more committed to the Bobcats.
