Life on the road in the MAC!  No ability to guard anyone.  DJ Cooper invisible again!  Coach with Deer in Headlights look again!  We are use to seeing this at home, but tonight we get the road version.

Some VERY questionable calls on Tommy though..

This is a bad Ohio team and it's really showing again. Can't dribble, can't pass (except for DJ, sometimes), can't shoot outside of Tommy and Nick, can't rebound. Defense is non existent.

Ugh.

I will disagree with any idea that this team doesn't have talent.

These refs are freaking HORRIBLE. Central Michigan is almost as bad against the press.

Instead of being babies about the Refs, focus on not getting it done against a 5-15 team.  This team (and coach) continues to be terrible.  This game puts coach Groce one game closer to .500 winning % at Ohio.  Coaching has not been a strong part of this team this year.

I agree:

Talent - Natural endowment or ability of a superior quality.

Is better with:

Skill - A developed talent or ability.

And that comes from:

Coach - A person who gives instruction.

Agreed 100%.

I hope we don't have another Bandy or Hahn; great assistants but just never had what it took to do be successful as a head coaches.

The problem in this game was NOT the refs.  IMHO, it's not the raw talent.  It's partly youth.  It's partly horrible defense.  And, could it be coaching?

Every aspect of MAC basketball is "horrible." From the lack of talent on any team roster to the refs. From the feeble attempt of humor between Reghi and Mix to the 3-figure attendance numbers.

How can Ohio give up 15 offensive rebounds (2 off of missed free throws, unofficially) to CMU? Let that sink in . . . 15 offensive rebounds by Central Michigan University. And I think we saw tonight why Ohio rarely presses fullcourt despite the call to do just that by some on this board.

Here's wishing the game had been blacked out by my local cable company.

Soft defense and lax rebounding are the consistent issues game after game.

Further to my above Talent/Skill/Coach definitions:

Determination - Firmness of purpose; resolve.

The "mental" part of the game - are we "flinching" too much?

We had the momentum and was back in the game down 5 with ball with ten minutes then Freeman and Cooper take two bad shots and let CMU bust the lead out to double digits. Right out of timeout and Freeman throws up that crap shot from Bubba land. Consider that we had so much success with Cooper attacking the rim to cut the lead to five before that and CMU never did stop Cooper driving to his left.

I've posted this same message several times and I think it's true here again---we're just very average.  We're a flawed/incomplete team.  The only good news is that the entire MAC appears the same.  So when we play very well, we can probably beat just about any team.  And when we don't (and/or we're on the road) we can lose to anyone in the MAC--case in point tonight.

What makes matters even the more difficult is that there's really no consistency to this team.  Just when you think one player is getting going, they don't the next game.  And just when you're about to bury a player after a poor performance, they play better the next game.  List each player on the squad and other than Sayles, Keely and Jacobs (they've been about the same all season), the rest of the squad is hot/cold.  Nobody puts more than 2-3 games in a row together where you think you've got something you count on game-in/game-out.  We're half way through the MAC season and we really don't have a flow, a rotation, or an identity.  Is it coaching?  Is it the by-product of too many defections the past few years which leaves us with seemingly a new team each season?  Is it not having a true big man and no playmaking #2 guard or small forward?  I think it's a combination of all of the above.

I actually thought that was a good look for Tommy when we were down 58-53. Open enough for Tommy and if he makes it, it's a different ball game. Thing is, there was just so much time left in the game. It was as though we fought hard to cut a 14 point lead to five that we felt we had to overtake the game right then and there. Down five, if you just play hard, you can win.

My dad would say we didn't go for the base hit.

Oh refs weren't terrible, but they were still bad. I saw plenty of bad calls go both ways. The worst was the spin move Ziegler put on Devaughn that was called a blocking foul. The official couldn't possibly have been looking at Devaughn's feet. Even Reghi said that was questionable but it was awarded play of the game by STO.

Fortunately, I was busy last night and didn't watch the game.

However, one need only look at the box score to see the trend continues:

Outrebounded...giving up 15 Offensive boards!
Poor Defense...gave up another 50% shooting night to the opponents and 91 Total points!

Obviously, this coach is not getting thru to the kids that winning (especially on the road) at the D1 level is a function of rebounding and defense.  Both of these take effort.  Most anybody at the D1 level can score. It's the later two that make a good team.

And speaking of life on the road in the MAC...when you play in front of an announced crowd of 1239 can we really be talking about an advantage because of a "big" crowd.  Just curious...
