The list of non-MAC participants looks like our OOC football schedule for 2011-2024...

I would take a home and home in football with Air Force, Hawaii, ECU, or SMU.

So winning this means what...we should have the best proof we should have been in the NIT?

It means nothing, but while were here we might as well make the most of it.

70 teams in NIT, CBI and CIT. That 2 more than the NCAA tournament.  138 teams in post season.

If a tree falls in the woods, but no one's around to hear it, does it still make a sound?

If a team wins a tournament, but no one knows the tournament exists, is it really even worth the effort?

Maybe less.  MAC bowl games are televised nationally on an ESPN channel so potential recruits and even pro scouts get a chance to look at the team (although I'm not sure we want them to see what they saw last year).  The CIT and CBI are friends and family games, unless you get to the final.  Even then, the final is on some lesser cable channel, so it's more likely that a potential recruit would happen to stumble across the game while channel surfing instead of making a point to watch it.

Maybe not to you but I guarantee it matters to John Groce, Tommy Freeman and DJ Cooper.   By the way some of you talk what's the point of playing basketball at all?   We aren't going to win the NCAA tournament, EVER. What's the point?

How about we just play basketball and root for the boys. Hope that this can be a growing experience for the kids returning and a way to keep the career going, if for just a little longer for Tommy, DeVaughn, Asown and Tunji.  I can only speak for myself but I'm not ready to say goodbye to them yet.    They have worked their butts off for us for the last four years (or in Asown's case the last five).

I'm really tired of this attitude that it's cool to think that everything sucks.   College basketball isn't about winning the NCAA tournament. It's about the little things like David McKinley representing Ohio University.  It's Tommy moving without the ball. It's about Ivo developing his skills. It's about Asown being the bigger man.  It's about the smell of the hot dogs as you walk in the doors to the Convo. It's about the squeak of shoes.  It's about 3 OT heartbreaking losses in December. It's about learning from mistakes. It's about the vein in John Groce's forehead.   It's about the ball of energy that is Tunji when he steps on the court in a D-1 ballgame even though he has no real expectation that he'll make it in that day.  It's about "Bang."   It's about the Ozone rushing the court after a buzzer beater.  It's about Jason Grunkenmeyer ripping our hearts out. It's about Tommy returning the favor. It's about playing as much basketball as you possibly can.

It's not about acting like you've been there before. It's not about trying to act like you are too good for anything.

Van is on fire today.  Hose him down!

Do any of you play sports anymore?  If so, why do you do it?  Those games don't "matter," yet you play anyway, right?

We are heading down the path where every team will be in some sort of post season tournament. I'm old enough to be from an era where you had to finish in first place to qualify for any sort of post season, whether it be CYO basketball or sandlot baseball. I remember playing in a CYO basketball tournamant and we made it to the championship game and lost. Only the champion received a team trophy and player trophy. I looked at those trophies and I wanted one! Maybe that's what motivated us to be better. But in the era of getting a gold star for just showing up, I guess 100 teams playing in the post season isn't enough. We had 30 games to show what we had and didn't cut the mustard. I'm sorry but I'm not real excited about it.

From my side of the Universe we hear almost daily the demise of Indiana basketball was when every school did not go into the tourney. It is a hoosier thing that everyone get to play on even ground big or small because that is the way real life comes at you.

OTOH I never have been to a CYO or sandlot tourney where all the participants did not get inthe post season. You are never going to accept that when you played the % of teams that got in was siognificantly higher than now . That is all anyone who wants 96 teams in the tourney wants is that the % of teams in is commensurate with the numbeer that start out. If that number was nearly a third then the same now would be nice. Think about qualifying for any other venue of sport how many get in the initial rounds of World Cup, NBA, NHL, NFL, Yachting or any other sport.

They made a movie about Milan HS that beat the giant Muncie Central in 1954. That movie Hossiers has probably sold a few copies in it's time.

Now all the principals at the small schools said ..."we can't compete" so they set up four classes and four communities get trophies in four sepreate finals.each year,  but the allure of how great Indiana basketball used to be is still felt in gyms that used to be totally fillled every friday night.

I dont disagree with the one set of trophies and none for the losers. At Muncie Central Tommy lost 2 state titles to odenand Conley and  the 05 and 06 kids joined the ranks of the 54 and 55 teams that lost to Milan and Oscar Robertson. You can see where the banners of those kids hang because we dont hang banners for sectionals, league....there is only one banner hung at MC

At the same time while the Big 6 conferences hold all the cards and the playing feild in the NCAA is not exactly level there is a place for the tourneys. Besides ...everyone knows you just dont agree with much and I for one have always been a bit embarrassed that you aere a former player with some kind of axe to grind.

When the big 6 srtart to play games in the Convo  and dont hold the cards and when the expansion of the Big Boy tourney gives a littel parity to leagues that are really getting banged up in conference beating each other up then I will tend to agree more with you ....till then I will long for the day when every team in Indiana had a fighting chance to be Cinderella and everyonce in a while Goliath got kicked to the curb,.

I'm sure you aren't. Finding the negative in any situation is your specialty.

I guarantee the players don't see this tournament this way.  They have worked hard for the opportunity to keep playing. This is hardly a participation ribbon. No it's not the NCAA tournament but it is a competitive tournament with good teams.  It wasn't the goal when the season started but now it is. Who cares how prestigious the tournament is? Life doesn't work this way. Goals change and you make the best of the current situation. You don't just give up.

Borna, do I take it from this that you prefer the one division setup that Indiana used to have?  Just curious.

On a side note, has anyone been following the OHSAA realignment proposals where schools who have had a great deal of success would be bumped up a division (just one of the proposals)?

Till the day I die ........Anyone  Anywhere Anytime was the mantra I grew up with. Did not matter how big or small you still got to play the game. One of the metaphors for life that basketball teaches.

I think prefer is a rather weak word when my bunch of friends starts talking about the tourney. But then Iam sure ring sales and trophies/plaques etc are bolstered by the addition of each additional class or division.

This is an unusual day.  I win a 10-1 odds bet with Alan.  He pays off.  And, I agree with the sentiments of both Al and borna.   All I can say is, Old Guys Rule!  I wish the OHSAA would adopted the everyone in the same tourney philosophy.
