With only one year left on his contract they had to either sign him to an extension or fire him.

It's too bad things didn't work out for Ramsey, but he had ample time to turn things around at EMU.  For whatever reasons, it just didn't happen.

I would think that they may have a hard time getting top candidates to take an interest in that job.

Hahah

with Pat Knight landing at Lamar that is probably closer to true than imagined.

Step down for Fife.

Andy Hipsher is a good fit.

This just speaks to how poorly run EMU Athletics are. Their season ended a month ago and they're firing the coach now? That's just incompetence.

At any rate, good for the MAC. Got rid of the two worst coaches, Patton and  Ramsey. Orr and Zeigler are next. KSU needs to get a solid replacement for Geno and then we might have something.

Or maybe they were just waiting to hire someone from Butler's staff.  Kept Ramsey until they could hire their guy.  Maybe not, maybe they are incompetent, I am just guessing.

The way guys with OU backgrounds are getting swept up, how about Bacari Alexander getting the nod from UofM? Definitely has the Detroit area background.

Speaking of Ohio backgrounds, I just noticed that Jon Sanderson is on the Michigan staff with Alexander.

He'll get a head coaching gig sooner or later.  He's a winner.

pretty interesting reading

As all of you know, I make no apologies whatsoever about my personal support of our student athletes and our athletic programs. Since I have been honored to serve on this Board, we have won over 18 Championships. More importantly , our student athletes' GPAs for the 2010 Fall Semester is over 3.1 (the second highest in School history) and the Department's graduation rate for the academic year 2009/2010 was 64%, 24% higher than the general student body graduation rate for the same period. Further, I firmly believe (without speaking for any of my colleagues) that successful athletic programs (particularly in Football and Men's Basketball) increase enrollment, school pride, as well as financial support from prospective donors. Study after study supports those facts.
From The Detroit News:

http://detnews.com/article/20110406/SPORTS0203/104060437/EMU-Regent--embarrassed--by-president-s-decision-to-fire-basketball-coach#ixzz1InJm713C

Given the preponderance for folks calling for removal of EMU from the conference it seems some of the folks up there might have a clue . Got to wonder if they also have a plan.....also would be interesting to see how we stack up to those numbers. Pretty staggering that their athletes graduate 24% above the student body.

The only thing I can think of is they must have an enormous dropout rate or something at that crummy school EMU, for them to be that much higher than general student pop.

Ohio GSR

EMU GSR

Ohio beats EMU in: Men BB, Men Baseball, Track/CC, football, golf, swimming, wrestling, Women BB, CC/Track, golf, soccer, softball, volleyball

Tie: Swimming

EMU beats Ohio in: (only sports that Ohio does not participate)

I've been led to believe a high number of EMU students transfer after a year or two.  It's almost a satellite campus for MSU and UM.

One of the articles I saw yesterday mentioned Jay Smith as a potential candidate. I guess he's now an assistant at Detroit Mercy. I almost had a stroke. Jay Smith fielded one of the worst MAC teams I've ever seen in his final season. Perhaps the only team worse is what Gene Cross left behind at Toledo.

Ted, isn't that the CMU team which trailed Ohio 39-7 at the half in the Convo in front of 10500 on Dad's Weekend?

Wasn't it the word that Jay had alienated Detroit HS and AAU people in his last few years at CMU and therefore couldn't recruit Detroit very well?  If so, hard to understand how he would fit at Detroit Mercy, and how he could be a good candidate for the EMU job.

OTOH, he brought his #13 seed CMU into the Convo and beat #4 seed Ohio, right?  And he did take one CMU team to the Big Dance and won a game.

Wouldn't Jay Smith be the third fired CMU coach to be a current head coach in the MAC? Hey why not?
