Every year, it seems Ohio opens with an exhibition against a lower division opponent or two to get tuned up for the season. This past year was Wooster, who was highly rated in DIII at the beginning of the year. This year, Marietta will be highly touted and return their whole team from a Sweet 16 appearance from last year. The two schools are very close geographically and have a history (both schools played every year until the late 70's). I heard from a Marietta player that the two coaches were trying to work something out but havn't heard anything since then. I know this would be low on the totem pole of things to look forward to for most 'Cat fans, but this would be a dream come true for me to see see my two teams on the same court together. What say you?

It would only be in Athens. No way they go to Marietta.

I would 100% agree with that, I never imagined Ohio would go to Marietta.

I like the idea of bringing in the local D-III, D-II, and NAIA schools. It's a good gesture. I think Groce likes having Wooster, so we'll probably see them regularly. I'd love to have Ohio Northern, but I imagine Rhodes wouldn't go for it.

I as well like the local lower division team coming in, but it needs to be a talented team. Bringing in Shawnee State won't do any good for either school. Although, you look at Wooster and Ohio whacked them pretty good and Wooster made the National Title game in DIII. But it is just an exhibition and its nice to have fans there instead of bringing in some joker from California. If anything, those parents and fans of the local school come back for a regular season game down the road.

I would love to see Ohio play at Marietta for an exhibition game. I think it can create a lot of goodwill between the University and SE Ohio. We live in the shadow of a program that plays by the closed door standards of the "Big Boys". We dream year after year of having one of those Big Boys who refuse to play at our house sign on the dotted line for a 1 and 1. How can we hope for a more balanced scheduling system in any NCAA sport if we (the Bobcats) can't even hop on the bus for a 45 minute ride to play a friendly exhibition game? I think it would show a lot of character if our athletic program made a point to show that they are not better than anyone but they are as good as anyone. How can we make this happen? I'm sure Marietta would pay for the gas and split the gate. Not to mention a game down there would probably be more effective than a Bobcat Caravan.

I would love to see Marietta and Ohio play an exhib game this coming season.

The first game I ever saw in the Convo was in 1977, my freshman year during Winter break, when Marietta played at Ohio.  The Bobcats squeezed out a 2 point victory.

When I was in HS, I used to go watch MC play a lot.

Ohio would never play at Marietta, but I agree that it would be a goodwill gesture toward an area we need to draw attendance from.  (Pardon ending sentence with preposition.)

Jeff, Marietta had Mitch Miracle and if the three point line had been in play, we would have lost. He hit a shot from the 28 foot line! Maybe Tim Joyce would have countered, but they gave us a nice game. Is Mitch Miracle a great name or what?

Anyone know why Groce likes having Wooster? Personally, being from Wooster and seeing that team play since I can remember, I love when they come to Athens.

Kent played an exhibition at Wooster a few years ago, so I suppose it's not a wild suggestion. I don't think it's a bad idea...

I agree with Situation.  Playing at MC would be a nice gesture, and I think would get us much good publicity in SEO.  I have absolutely no problem with the idea.  Hey, I'd even play a regular season game at Rio Grande.  Just give me a Big 6 team in the Convo!

I can't remember if Groce has some sort of connection with Wooster's staff. But he does like the way the Scots play and thinks they're good practice.

Agreed (from Millersburg), I love it when they come down.

I definitely wouldn't mind an exhibition with Marietta, either.

So this is where we're at?

All are clamoring to see us play Marietta. Several want us to go to Marietta.

Not a good way to start the week. Very unfortunate.

But, its just talk of an exhibition. Don't think of it like the OU football team using 1 of 12 games against Gardner-Webb. Think of it like a barnstorming tour of Southeast Ohio.

Giacomo, I remember Mitch Miracle well.  About 6-1, lanky blond kid.  Attended River Local High School.  Was an amazing outside shooter.

Got word today that Marietta approached Ohio about an exhibition in Athens and were turned down. Guess that's that.

Give it a break.  Your overall concern is valid and I buy into it, but when you try to make every move a validation of your point it becomes old and takes away from your greater concern.  Look no further than Kansas (Washburn and Emporia State) and Missouri (Harris-Stowe and Ark Fort Smith) as examples of schools playing exhibition games versus friendly foes.

I'm with Love on this one.  Last year, OU played Ohio Valley University from Parkersburg.  I did not have one single person come up to me and say they thought it was a nice regional gesture to play them.  Marietta is usually at the bottom of the OAC standings.  Their team could not beat our intramural championship teams most years.  I'm glad we turned them down.

Yeah but the OVU games was a regular season game and everyone here hated that we scheduled them. We're talking about an exhibition game with Marietta.

I don't have a problem playing them in an exhibition. But to discuss it ad nauseum on this board b/c they are close by is a little ridiculous. Even thinking we would go there is a step past ridiculous.

No issues with turning them down.

It feels kind of good to be the big boy on the block for once, instead of having everyone take our milk money.

To give a little prospective on Marietta and OVU, Marietta handled OVU in an exhibition last year by 15 points. Marietta did not graduate a single senior off their Sweet 16 team last year and will be heavy favorites to repeat in the OAC and will be in the discussion of Final Four possibilities. I might be a little biased but I think Ohio could get something out of an exhibition with Marietta this year.

yeah. c'mon guys, let's not have a casual conversation on a message board during the off season, it denegrates the high esteem we should hold ourselves and our athletic department to.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go practive being preachy while referring to myself in the 3rd person.

Marietta also added a couple really good players, which will be solid contributors.

I don't remember having this discussion before.
