If the APR goes up next year. That will depend on nobody leaving and our players to make grades. I'm not optimistic.

This is really gonna hurt if Larry Nance Jr. turns out to be a good player somehwere. Hopefully we have no injuries and this isn't an issue.

Memo to Coach Groce, time to start recruiting players that won't leave school until they have graduated.

You can look at this one of two ways...

1. Bringing in "character guys" like Bassett and Kinney put you in this position b/c of the effect early departures have on the formula. You can question Groce's judgement there and take him to the woodshed.

Or...

2. You can accept it for what it is. It doesn't hurt the roster next year. Without Armon, we definitely wouldn't have made the NCAA run in 2010 that brought so many of us great memories. Washington wasn't a Groce guy, so his departure shouldn't be tied to JG in my opinion.

I opt for #2 with the caveat that I don't think anybody has Groce on a long leash right now after last year's awfully under-achieving performance, habitual program defections & suspensions, and character issues.

Being seeded 9, 9, and 5 in the MAC Tournament in the last 3 years respectively isn't going to cut it - no matter the memories 2010 produced. You can't have a program with the current on and off court complexion and expect to continue getting accolades like those garnered after the 2010 run.

I'm with you there. The rumor is Washington skipped out to prepare for his pro career. If that's the case, I don't really blame him and would have done the same (while still being unhappy about its effect).

I meant to mention this. IF preparation for a pro career is really the reason why Washington bolted school early, then I have NO issue with his decision. His earning potential is tangible and real, so I don't see this as any different then an on-the-job internship or clerkship for college credit for more traditional students.

If he jumped ship b/c he hated school and couldn't pass QBA...then that's another story. But, I lean towards him having pro dreams and trying to prepare for the next step.

So Ohio and Toledo are the only two in the MAC whose scores result in the penalty. The way the usual suspects on here talk, you'd expect Akron and Kent to be the ones in our shoes.

I'm not sure blame is the right word. I'll have to do some research but I believe you can leave school early to pursue pro dreams without negatively impacting your school's APR. In looking at the NCAA website, it's when a player leaves and is academically ineligible that there's an issue. So while we shouldn't blame someone for pursuing their pro dreams, I think it's reasonable to be disappointed when the players/coaches/academic advisors don't manage this.

So let's say we had this last scholarship already promised to a recruit who was signed and had their bags packed for Athens...What would've happenned then?  Pick a scholarship and say sorry?

That graph just made me ill....reminded me of the torture of stat classes......did have one I like where the prof had taught high school freshman the year before and he said he would treat us as if we were in the same mathematical boat......worked for me.

This happened to Toledo.  They lost 3 scholarships, and were down to 10, with 11 scholarship players on the roster.  Hayden Humes "decided" to transfer, rather than become a walk on.

Ohio obviously knew about this shortfall and thus never were going to add another scholarship this spring.
My question is will this defection issue hurt us for numerous years to come or is it only a 1 year issue?
Those who say 1 scholarship is no big deal I disagree. We need all scholarships to be filled to be competitive.
Overall Bassett, Kellogg, Coleman, & now Washington have left. All over a short period of time, not good. There were others previous, like Kenny, Horne just to name a few.
It looks like we are in for a period of years where we loose scholarships. This is not good for the university as well as Groce.
While many of these players were TOS recruits they all left under Groce's watch. One would think that the coaching change had something to do with these defections.

I thought there was an initial "warning" year before you were docked a scholarship.  Am I wrong or did that already happen or are we so bad we skipped the warning and went straight to losing a scholarship?

Kent lost a scholarship a few years ago. Didn't hurt them. And how is Kellogg quitting basketball and staying in school a mark against OU?

Nance signed with Wyoming on May 2.  Are you saying we could have had him? Larry Shyat is the Wyoming coach and has ties to Cleveland, as he was an asst. at Cleveland State in the late 70's- early 80's.
