It seems to me that we still need to "gel" at the offensive end. DJ needs to know his role as a scorer will be diminished this year because of all the talent around him and his shot selection needs a bit of improvement. Adding Offutt has given them another threat on the offensive end along with Ivo and Reggie coming into their own underneath not to mention Jon Smith who looked pretty good in his first real game action in 3 years. Offensive rebounding was very nice but we have to finish more around the rim. I love the speed at which they play though! As long as we can stay under control and not get too excited we should try to push the tempo as much as possible and keep the pressure up on D with as deep as we seemed. UT-M looked outclassed for 3/4 of the game we just needed to finish them off which will come in time. I am very excited for the prospects of this season as long as the team buys in to what Coach Groce is selling.

DJ accepting his somewhat altered role will be the key to our success this year.  if he continues to chuck up threes in key situations, we're in trouble.

This is true, however some folks have been castigated for stating as much

CONCERNS:
DJ - Certainly a lot of the game what we expect - unfortunately including a couple of the too quick 3 toss-ups for misses........

I'm hardly concerned about DJ. The short time we had Cooper, Tayor and Offut on the court together in the first half was a revelation. The rest of what he does so far outweighs a couple of bad shots in a game.

I'm not Overly concerned, especially during a win. Not sure what his 3 shoot % was today - but I don't think it was better than his career 30%. 30%/3's is not a game changer (50%+/2's is). A few Bigs w/O rebounds and put backs off of 'em would be nice (but that usually not gonna happen as they aren't down & able to position yet)

IT has been a game changer, is a game changer and will continue to be a game changer. By cutting off your actual shooters and not making the extra pass the entire team dynamic and locker room agenda are invariably changed. Shooters stop looking for shots or worse, start taking bad ones instead of moving the ball one more pass. THe death knell for any TEAM is when the guy running the show becomes the show.  IN that vein Stevie Taylor was sensational in his debut running the show for a few moments. Pure speed and a couple of frosh mistakes but for the most part laughed and played and chided and accepted the role and made guys look good.

I would be more concerned if DJ looked to score on every possession. He doesn't.   He almost never puts up a three without others on the team touching the ball.  He had good quick ball movement most of the game.  Other players are involved.  I have a bigger problem with the rest of the players not running the offense and stopping looking for their shots which is what happened yesterday.  As for Taylor, he was exciting as hell but much less effective than DJ.  He chucked up shots at a much higher rate than DJ and got the ball to players where they could score much less frequently.  Not trying to bash Taylor because he's got me excited as hell but people on here love to bash Cooper while dismissing his huge contributions in other areas.  The story yesterday was not Cooper chucking up bad shots (his last three pointer was taken with the lead in the 20s with about 12 minutes to go).  It was our entire team taking their collective feet off the pedal and allowing a completely overmatched team back in the ballgame.  Some of that is on DJ but only a small amount.

A few thoughts, bullet point style:
  • Totally agree with the thoughts of DJ's shot selection, and pretty surprised the masses haven't responded yet disgusted that we question DJ in any way.  Look, we know he is awesome, we just think he is more awesome at some things than other things, and he should focus on the more awesome things.
  • Walt is just what we needed last year, a good shooter and solid shot creator to get the ball when we can't get it inside or get an open look.
  • The comparisons of DJ and Stevie go beyond just short talented point guard...They are fun to watch together, it is almost like a wildcat formation when those 2 are bringing the ball up the court together.
  • Ivo didn't blow anyone away yesterday but I you can just tell he has it...A great player.
  • Reggie looked pretty good, he could really be a great player.  He just needs to get more angry and own that paint.  When the defense crashes in on him, he tends to not finish or not even get a shot up.  This is primarily where Ivo is ahead of him.
  • I liked what I saw in Goard and Smith.  Potential there in both...We need them to improve and they will be a huge help to us.
  • We had so much hustle and energy in the first 26 minutes...I was thinking MAC CHAMPS!  Then reality set in, as it often does...We are still prone to the ultra ugly stretch.  The 16-0 run was excruciating in so many ways, there was very little energy and movement, complete contrast to the ball we were playing when we built the 60-31 lead.
  • We did well with the fast break...We seem to be quick and have very few if any players that can handle the ball well in transition.  I say we run with it early and often this year.
  • TJ Hall 3 fouls in 3 minutes...yikes.  He is going to have to make some improvements to make the regular rotation.
  • I wouldn't be so quick to label us as a 9 deep rotation team.  I think we'll see an amergence from 1-2 players to close to FT combined with struggling or injuries of 1-2 others that makes us settle around an 8 or even 7 man rotation.
  • Seats in front of Ozone looked natural, Convo was looking good.  New seat cushions?  Also, and I mean this sincerely...My pretzel was fantastic.

There is no chance Keely is at the 263 lbs. He's listed at. Dare I say, he may be at 235. That will serve him very well. That play he sealed his man under the basket and Ric found him on the bullet pass...the last two years that would have been a layup for Keely. Yesterday he rose for a two hand jam.

Lazy effort from the O Zoners who showed up. You guys looked and sounded hungover.

I loved seeing Cooper, Taylor, Kellog, and Offut on the court at the same time.  I need to see more and more of this.  (Part of the reason is I think our front court is really, really weak.)

Cooper takes about 3 "tone deaf" shots per game.  Almost always 3 pointers.  Get used to it.  It ain't changing.

It seemed to me Groce kind of just let the 16-0 run happen.  Let the team try to work it out.  Then, he finally called a timeout and called some specific plays which started resulted in trips to the free throw line.  So, while I was frustrated watching it happen, I'm not too worried about it.

I want to see more clear outs for Offut.  Let him attack, attack, and attack the rim some more.

I agree.  I don't think you can play all four for very long but any three of them really gives us some defensive quicks that make it extremely difficult for other teams.   One of the reasons we destroyed Georgetown was that they couldn't just defend penetration from one player. With Cooper, Taylor and Offut it really can make it difficult for teams to guard us. I don't include Kellogg in that group because he seems tentative to score off the dribble although I have no doubt he could.   The four of them defensively are ridiculously quick.

The other added benefit is that DJ isn't going to have to play 40 minutes anymore.  Or if he's not playing well we have alternatives.
