Im ready for Basketball season. I think Offutt could be a difference maker like AB was 2 years ago. We have a Big Ten backcourt and a mid level MAC frontcourt. I think Cooper could be MAC POY if he has a big year and I could see Ivo or Offutt getting 2nd team all MAC or sneaking on to the 1st team if they have a big year. The frontcourt is going to be the difference between a 5th place finish in the MAC or a chance to make a run in the NCAA tournament

Pumped for the game tomorrow! Skyhawks got smashed the other night - hopefully we take care of business and avoid a string of unexpected early season home losses like last year.

Skyhawks picked to finish 8th in the 11 team OVC.  They will depend on underclassmen.  Only one senior.

Mike Liabo is a good three point shooter and Ohio will need to identify him as a shooter.  The Skyhawks had trouble with turnovers at Louisville, so I would expect Ohio to play pressure defense.

UT-Martin had trouble last year with defense. They also had a weak assist to turnover ratio.

They do appear to have athleticism on their roster and brought in a good recruiting class.

This is a game Ohio should win by 15 if they play well.

Anyone's else video/audio of low quality and off-center of the viewing window?  That is currently my experience.  Is it my settings or the feed itself?

Second half has featured 10 minutes of the worst basketball I've seen in a long time.  Shot clock violation with 2:35 left worries me - we had no clue what play to run.

Instead of stepping on the throat by continuing to shoot, we've been looking to eat the clock.

Wait, the crotchety old men around me said we weren't killing any clock and just chucking up shots. I'm confused.

On several possessions toward the end of the game DJ seemed to want to put on a dribbling exhibition to see how much time he could take off the clock and then would chuck up some miserable looking shot.  I wasn't sure if he was freelancing all of this, or if JG was experimenting to see DJ's clock-killing skills for situations in which he would be really needed in the season ahead.  Any thoughts on this?

This game had the potential to be a real coming out party but we played down to the level of the competition for long periods of time. UT-M had no answer for the O for the first half and they simply couldnt get to the basket themselves.  I thought our shot selection degenerated in the second half but I think they picked up their D, too.  There was a nice spurt of up tempo play just before the 8 minute media timeout killed the mo.

Gottta like Offut.  He takes the ball straight to the hole again and again.   Lots of guys saw the floor and got some minutes.  Not a bad first day at all.

CONCERNS:

Belton & Jacobs not dressed - anyone have injury status updates?

FT shooting - horrible

Rebounding - especially H2. Block out! Too many flashback memories of LY!

Hall - ?

DJ - Certainly a lot of the game what we expect - unfortunately including a couple of the too quick 3 toss-ups for misses........

NOT a strong finish - more flashback memories of LY

POSITIVES:

Offutt - A hustler, a leader, a winner. Love his quick bursts - really makes me think of Bassett.

Keely - I think improved. A few D lapses - but scored well.

Baltic - Just not his day for O, good day for rebounds. Kellog a lot of solid minutes too, not much reflected though on the stats.

Taylor, Smith, Goard - First regular season game - good efforts, will all just get better.

Speed - like it. Just finish better.

Depth of bench - I think will become more & more an assett through the season....

I'm hardly concerned about DJ.  The short time we had Cooper, Tayor and Offut on the court together in the first half was a revelation.   The rest of what he does so far outweighs a couple of bad shots in a game.

I'm not Overly concerned, especially during a win. Not sure what his 3 shoot % was today - but I don't think it was better than his career 30%. 30%/3's is not a game changer (50%+/2's is). A few Bigs w/O rebounds and put backs off of 'em would be nice (but that usually not gonna happen as they aren't down & able to position yet)

The defensive pressure forced a boatload of turnovers and a big lead.  Assist/turnover ratio was outstanding especially for a season opener. Its helps having quality guards like we do.  Keely nice game. Offutt solid debut for Ohio.  Sounds like a lot a garbage time in second and we were outscored 34-14 after building a 29 point lead. Perhaps we lost focus with the lead a bit. Free throws point to that a bit. Minutes were spread out like an exhibition game which this was in away. Lamar will be a better team as will Arkansas State. Those teams will give us a battle.  Louisville and Marshall games will be tough and we can't leave points at the foul line against those teams like we did today.  Looks like a deep rotation and Groce has lots of options.  Freshmen with good games.

The good and bad of DJ was on display today: 10 assists, two steals, two turns. Shooting, though: 4-13 from the floor, 3-6 at the line, 1-6 from deep. I wish I knew if DJ simply can't help himself from shooting or he feels like he has to. He certainly doesn't need to score; we have plenty of weapons and his assist numbers bear that out. When he doesn't force things, he's so good. When he does force things, it's frustrating.

Offensive rebounding was OK, but it was defensive rebounding that was the problem (not that this is anything new). Martin got back 42.4% of its misses.

It's obvious Groce has a lot of faith and expectations for Reggie this year. If he gets confidence to finish strong, watch out. And Rico Johnson with a very solid game. Hopefully he's making the Sophomore Leap.
