If he had kept up his winning percentage, he likely would've been long gone to a Big 6 program.  I don't know if his loyalty to his alma mater could trump the cash they might've thrown at him.

O'Shea and Groce have never earned a seed higher than 4th in the MAC.  How many top three finishes Ohio teams in the regular season under Hunter. 

And yet all 3 have been to the same number of NCAA Tournaments, not to mention Groce advancing to the 2nd round. That's the sad commentary on Larry.

The program was a mess at the end. He had to go.

I give Hunter respect in his achivement of 600.  As there have not been many coaches to reach this goal.  I see no use to discuss "what if" .  Larry had a good run here at Ohio, but really became complacent and lost his edge.  He regained the coaching mode while at NC State moving on to W. Carolina where he has a good W/L record. Proud of Larry Hunter, but happy with JG. 

And if Solich had a better winning percentage he would have stayed at Nebraska.  Would you rather have Hunter coaching bball (instead of Groce) or Solich coaching football?  Give me Solich and Groce.

I think Solich averaged 9-3 a year in his tenure at Nebraska, including a national championship. We got him because the then AD, Steve Pederson, was and is an idiot. His quote at the time was something like " we are Nebraska and deserve something better". Oh really?

Our AD at the time wanted to get rid of Larry in the worst way. He had one year remaining on his contract and a pretty nice team coming back. He should have been given the opportunity to coach the last year of his contract. We bought him out. Since when are we in the position to buy out coaches contracts? This still sticks in my craw. Larry was an Ohio man, through and through. This travesty would not have happened in the old days. It's not like he had a terrible season. The AD couldn't take the chance that he might have won the MAC in his last year and then would not have been able to fire him. It not like we're OSU and we fire a guy and bring in a proven winner. We're Ohio and we fire a proven winner and bring in an unproven asst. coach. Then spin it and say "we're moving to the next level." Please.

Larry's mistake was not leaving after the Trent years. But as I said, he was an Ohio man through and through.

Frank never won a national championship at Nebraska though. And there were certain reasons to question his control of the team and effectiveness of recruiting.

Given some of the prior less-than-stellar ADs we've had in the past, I'm thankful (timely Thanksgiving reference) we have Jim Schaus as Athletic Director-the man knows good coaching when he sees it and knows to retain it when possible.

For my money I thought Danny Nee outdid both Hunter and TOS. 2 NCAA appearances (with a win) in the 6-7 seasons he was here was not too shabby. Too bad he left for Nebraska as I think he could have taken Ohio to another level.

You're absolutely right. I'd put Nee right below Snyder on our all-time coaches list. If we could have kept him around, I can only imagine the possibilities. As it turns out, he had several middling seasons at Nebraska before heading to "early retirement" at Duquesne.
