- Our basketball tradition is running on empty.

- We should rarely beat them in basketball, let alone football.

- As always, we have no fans (mainly because we don't go to their message board).

- We don't have a player that would start for Marshall.

- This game just proved our much more talent the Herd has.

- We're going to tank their RPI.

- Overall sports tradition between the two schools is incomparable. (I agree with this, but not for the reason he thinks.)

- They should have blown us out.

Gotta love Herd Nation.

Looks like borna has calmed them down a bit with a little rational talk and a little buttering them up. There are still a couple of idiots over there but most realize that we are a pretty good team.

Have not read their fan boards.  But I did hear the post game show on the way home.  I give their announcers credit for recognizing that this was more than just Marshall not showing up.

Some of the most maddening comments by Herd fans appear on the Herald Dispatch website attached to the game articles.  An example:
Best comment on hear was MU play down to their opponent and the officiating-officiating was horrid the last 2 minutes and MU as other teams do has to not play down to the other weaker talent.

Glad to see when Mu loses it brings out the dazzle in everyone whom is either not a Herd fan, at Who fan in disguise -or not a basketball fan period.

The Ohio hater Chuck Landon also wrote a column disrespecting Ohio and saying MU just takes MAC teams lightly and that's the only reason Ohio beat them.  And a lot of Herd fans are drinking his kool aid.

It is truly aggravating that a significant portion of Marshall's fans absolutely refuse to give any credit to Ohio, although some did on their post game radio show last night.

Jeff,

How about this take from Chuck McGill of the Daily Mail (http://dailymail.com/Sports/MUSports/201111300332) :
The Herd lost by two points, but missed 13 more free throws than its Mid-American Conference visitors.

Shouldn't it more along the lines of:
Ohio managed to win despite Marshall getting to the line 27 more times.

I love Athens to death, but Parkersburg is more happening than Athens 4 months out of the year.  Plus, Parkersburg generally dislikes Marshall.  I would say it is 10:1 WVU to Marshall fans here.  And I can say that WVU fans are not indifferent to Marshall.  They clearly root against Marshall.

And yet there are Ohio fans that insist that OU vs. Marshall constitutes some kind of rivalry.  Any rivalry worth having includes a smidgen of mutual respect, given grudgingly or not.  I have yet to see it out of Marshall but, then, I only see what makes it into the papers, I guess.

I don't understand.

If they're better than us, how come we keep beating them?

All of this coming from a team who is only in a different conference because their football team was successful for about a decade......a decade ago.  If my memory serves me correctly, the Herd was at best a middle of the pack team while a part of the MAC and never won a title that I can remember (at least in their Late 90's to Mid 2000's Reunion Tour).  I did enjoy being a part of the inaugural O-Zone and taunting the Covergirl Greg "I wear make up" White and his star player Tamar Slay.

How many C-USA Championship Banners are hanging from the rafters at the Henderson Center?  As I recall we picked their pocket in Huntingpit last year in Round 1 of the CBI.  Anyone know what our all-time head to head record is?  Let the delusional Herd maintain their superiority complex all they want.....we typically beat them in hoops because we are a better team.  C-USA is not your babysitter's C-USA.  Take away Memphis' run after Cincy, 'ville, Marquette etc. left and what do they have to hang their hats on.  I think we would be a competitive team there-I mean didn't we just beat a pre-season favorite in their own barn?

Top to bottom, CUSA is probably a better conference than the MAC.  BUT it's not like five of the Big 6 where MAC teams have a genuine shot at beating only the bottom two or three teams (I exclude the Big Least because most MAC teams have a real shot at beating all but the top two or three BL teams).  No CUSA team should be so full of itself that they think a MAC team will rollover when CUSA throws its jock on the court.  G-town discovered the folly of this in March '09...and Terd isn't as good as that Hooya team was.  When you're a "mid-major" school (for want of a better phrase), you don't take anybody for granted.  The Terd just needs to realize that, like it or not, they are a "mid-major" school.

Reading the Marshall boards is one of my favorite past times. There's a constant theme that flows through all of their topics- the move from the MAC to CUSA didn't go like they hoped it would and some aren't coping with that reality very well.

This puts commentors into two camps- The Chest Thumpers and The Realists. The Chest Thumpers are insane and live int total denial. They like to talk about how much the MAC sucks, how when a MAC team plays them its the MAc team's super bowl, how guys like DJ  Cooper wouldn't even start for the Herd (my new favorite delusion), and so forth. They speak in absurd absolutes where the grass is always (kelly) greener.

The rest of the commentors are The Realists. These guys engage in logical dialog and bring up valid points that drive the Chest Thumpers over the edge- Marshall's glory days were in the MAC, Marshall has struggled in CUSA, traveling to away games is much harder now, their TV contract pays more but covers less, sometimes MAC teams win because they're good, and so on.

The back and forth that ensues is laugh out loud hilarious. Here's some more great quotes from today-

Chuck is spot on with this column. No way OU should compete against us on our own floor and the football loss is inexcusable. There probably isn't two guys on that football team we would even recruit.

Cooper WOULD NOT start over Pitts or Kane--PERIOD!

Fellow HERD fans. Get off the high horse and give OHIO and the MAC their due credit. We left the MAC in 05, we never won the conference tourney in bball ?and failed to win the Conference our last two seasons in football. We lose to OU in bball twice and football once in a span of 12 months. Not to mention a loss to BUGS in 09 in football. This years bball team has accomplished exactly jack shit except for one win against UC, that’s it. Our players, staff, on both teams have the same DAMN attitude when it comes to MAC schools as some of the “high horse” fans. We are not better then most MAC teams, in the two sports. So quit acting like it. The degree of HOLIER THEN THOU attitudes towards the MAC is the same reason we hate WVU fans for downgrading everything we did in the conference during our run in football. Now, some of you act just like them.

Thank you Herd fans for always being entertaining.

Tough loss... But when we finish the regular season 28-2 (only other loss coming to EITHER Memphis OR Syracuse), we'll look back at this game and say oh well. Then we'll tear it up in the conference and NCAA tourneys.

Talk about delusional.

What are you doing in this forum when football is still going on? I thought you didn't approve of basketball talk during football season.

That's how it is with most fanbases. The difference is that the Herd wackos are way the hell out there.

Marshall has always been a solid basketball school. Remember the Tamar Slay days? I think he went on to play with the New Jersey Nets and Charlotte Bobcats.
It really comes down to recruiting. They are both so close in distance and likely end up going for the same players on the recruiting trail in terms of locality.
