I understand the "must have a degree" crowd but I disagree.  If Gary Trent had not been able to maintain his eligibility then I can understand it being a factor but while he was here he did his work in the classroom.  He also did more for Ohio athletics than any athlete of the last 40 years.  And when he left he was more successful with what he learned at Ohio than 99.99% of Ohio grads. In my opinion, an Ohio education isn't about the piece of paper. It's about what you do with it.  Matt Lauer didn't need a degree to be a credit to the University and neither did Gary Trent.  Having a degree should be an important criteria but it shouldn't be a deal breaker.  Standing in line on Richland Avenue waiting to get into the Miami game his Junior year and a preseason NIT Championship on National TV is what he brought to the school.  He's in my Ohio HOF degree or not.

Looks like my nomination trickled through the Athletic Department and now someone leaked it  to the post.  I bet its a done deal.

I never heard anything back from the Athletic Dept, but that doesnt mean my nomination wasnt read

I wonder if I can stake claim and be invited to all the festivities just for being his "sponsor"

i never post on here, but i was wondering about Mr. Trent, and this came up on the google search.  Its been so long since I read this board I clearly forgot it was out there.  Thats what living in TX for 7 years will do to you.

I am a former student athlete and per the nomination criteria, I can nominate Gary, so I did.  I sent the Associate AD an email and the proof of Mr. Trent getting his degree, so now the process is in motion.  We will see what they say?

peace

Smith

so I find it pretty coincidental that about 2 weeks after I post this something happens, dont you?

Look at the crowd.  I think Im the Letter "A".  This would have been the OU/Miami game his Junior year - look at how full the place is;  has the convo ever been this full since?

It's probably more likely The Post got the story ideas after reading BA.com and dug a little bit.

Much like TV announcers creating talking points which seem to come directly from our BA.com threads...

Had he stayed for his senior year, his stats would have been unbelievable. Maybe 3000 points and 4 time conference player of the year. However, we should still maintain our standard of having a degree to eligible for the HOF. He has it now and sonething should happen within a reasonable amount of time. But as the article said, it probably won't be right away. How long did it take Frankie Baumholz?

they need to do it before he gets old and wrinkled.   At minimum they need to get him into the HOF and then within 5 years make a decision to retire number 20

Per the athletics website, Trent's jersey will be retired at the Miami game.

I figured they would do this during a big game this year.  Pretty pumped for this.

judging by this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9w27jPQpyk&feature=feedu , the athletic department is anticipating a sellout crowd, possibly even record breaking.  This game is destined to be a great one.

Is this to say all seating is assigned for this game?

Save for the student section, it will probably be more enforced than it is normally.

We should have a standard that to be eligible for HOF you need to finish your degree. It doesn't matter what UNC does. We set our own standard. We are a university first and athletics are somewhere further down on the list. If Gary earned his degree then he should be eligible.

Agreed.  If it was up to me, the ceremony would take place Dad's weekend when we play Miami.  Doing it with Charlie in the house would be a classic not to mention a full house.  The only possible downside is that we typically have a big snow storm around the 20th - 27th many years.

Glad they read this and got it right.

Cue the complaints from season ticket holders about deeply discounting tickets to drive attendance.

Or is that complaint just applicable to FB?

I'm super excited to actually see the convo SOLD OUT!  I'm a fairly recent Bobcat fan (started following when i went to school in 2009-2010).  The closest i've seen it being sold out was Dad's weekend my freshman year: just over 10,000 reported.  I'm seriously expecting in the realm of 13,500-14,000 for this game.

Fire code won't allow that, but I do expect it to be a new high for me in the building (most I've seen was against BG in January '09 -- 10,988).
