If Gary Trent isn't in the Hall of Fame this coming season and his jersey isn't up in the rafters this coming season then that place isn't fit to have either a Hall of Fame OR rafters. Period. Some people need to get off of their high horses and right that wrong. No excuses anymore.

I agree with you - I just hope it isn't a hastily put together thing. And IMO, if that doesn't allow it to happen this season, I'd be fine with it. It would be more of a shame for them to announce it only a month before the date, or have it on a weeknight, or something else that would allow it in a less than crowded Convo. Just my thought.

It's my understanding that the only jersey that has been retired by OHIO is the one of Frank Baumholz. The jerseys of Snyder, Luckett and Jamerson also hang in the Convo but are not retired.

Personally

after visiting a plethora of facilities the last 10 years it would be nice if someone would spearhead a campaign to get rid of the pics in the convo and replace them with laser etched plaques that look professional and like we care about the likeness' of our former athlets.

Or at least get new copies of some of the badly faded pixs.  Some that you can hardly see the image on anymore are highly embarrassing .

I don't disagree, but when our former athletes start caring about us, we can start caring about them.

Do we have that in the budget?

i never post on here, but i was wondering about Mr. Trent, and this came up on the google search.  Its been so long since I read this board I clearly forgot it was out there.  Thats what living in TX for 7 years will do to you.

I am a former student athlete and per the nomination criteria, I can nominate Gary, so I did.  I sent the Associate AD an email and the proof of Mr. Trent getting his degree, so now the process is in motion.  We will see what they say?

A few related thoughts:

There appears to be nothing in the HOF criteria that would preclude Trent's admission based on any episodes of bad behavior.

The HOF criteria clearly say that an inductee needs a bachelor's degree but it doesn't have to be from OU.

So why does the Slam article say Trent can never be inducted because he was finishing his degree somewhere else?

???????????????????????????????????????????????

Also, if the author of the Slam article was going to bring up Trent's behavioral issues and discuss how some people believe that's the reason for the HOF snub, why would the author not mention the most recent behavioral issue, which was only resolved a few months before the article came out?

IF there is one thing I have taken away from the last 6 years is that there is a reason behind Ohio athletes feeling disenfranchised as opposed to other Universities and even when compared to regular OU alumni. I am proud of COach Groce organizing and reaching out to the former basketball players and at least providing a "welcome back" .....many of them told me they greatly appreciated how they were treated and the fact that someone had finally contacted them. I was over in England so all of my info has come from inside the program, the basketball alums and what I read on here about the football game. I hope he continues to reach out and invite those alums back and eventually a strong band of brothers results like exists in many universities with which I am familiar.  I am sure there are those who take exception and feel all athletes are prima donnas and dont deserve extra attention but go coacst to coast and see how Lettermans clubs tailgate and support their programs.

IMHO and experience, those same athletes who juggle classes, sport, life and getting their degrees carry those same attributes into their daily life and continue to be intensely loyal to the causes they beliieve in and support. Irregardless, there is a vast body of folk out there renging from harriers to softball to football that speak glowinglyof their years here but do not keep Ohio somehwat  centered in their world like many of the rest of us do. Chicken or egg, which goes ffirst?

I think the athletics department would be well served to take a page from the playbook of the Marching 110 when it comes to alumni relations. Look at the turnout at homecoming, that has to be one of the largest alumni bands in the country. I know some 110 alums and they still very much identify with the band, financially contribute, and make sure that the current members understand the importantance of upholding a high standard.

I might be one of the few people who still actually own a Gary Trent OHIO #20 jersey. Sure it doesn't fit, but I keep it in my drawer out of respect for the man.

I'm so tired of this debate. He now has his degree and it doesn't bother me that it's not from OHIO. Retire #20 and move on. The man put OHIO basketball on the map in the early 90s and the whole country knew about him. Long live the Shaq of the MAC. I will never forget the 46 he dropped on Larranagga's Falcons.

For quite a few years there - #20 on a Ohio B Ball jersey almost seemed like it was THE Official Ohio jersey - any other number looked like someone made a mistake!

Good points indeed.

BOnzi finished way short of his degree even staying all 4 years....but he was able to donate enough to see his jersey into the rafters.

Ahhhhh well the saga continues. BTW North Carolina has 43 jerseys up there and many of them have not completed their degree. 8 are retired, jersies are hung based on basketball accomplishment.

Borna,

I was at a UNC game a few years ago where they were hanging jerseys. Roy Williams made a point of saying that these men were getting their jerseys (as I recall Scott May and a couple of other guys) hung because they accomplished what was needed in the classroom. Did I misinterpret what he said?

I looked at several sources. WIki provided the best documentation. I do remember Antwaun Jamerson going back and finishing his degree and I am pretty sure it was well after his jersey had been hung.

Thanks. Maybe it was their championship banner? Don't know but Roy definitely made a point of it and the crowd really applauded it. Of course, I was so high up in the Dean Dome that my ears could have failed me.

Maybe staying eligible is their standard for "accomplishing what was needed in the classroom."

Does not surprise me about that bunch with Scott May....he and Jared Jeffries were on the same Bloomington State Finalist team and each was an academic all stater here in Indiana as was 4.0 Student Zeller who is an other Indiana All Star plucked by Carolina to play College ball.  That bunch that came through with Scott May was an impressive bunch of guys with High Character.....

On a side note THis article regarding Halloween in Chapel hill and another should provide OU alums with interesting reading. Found those looking for evidence of jersies having anything to do with academics.

We should have a standard that to be eligible for HOF you need to finish your degree. It doesn't matter what UNC does. We set our own standard. We are a university first and athletics are somewhere further down on the list. If Gary earned his degree then he should be eligible.

Agreed.  If it was up to me, the ceremony would take place Dad's weekend when we play Miami.  Doing it with Charlie in the house would be a classic not to mention a full house.  The only possible downside is that we typically have a big snow storm around the 20th - 27th many years.

I'm glad to see someone say this.  University first, athletics second.  I wish the "big" schools in the NCAA would identify with this more.  Might not have this conference realignment mess....but that's another thread.

I'm with Ben - I think they should wait to make sure it's done right, and not done on a weekday night rather than rushing it into 2012's slate of games.

Exactly what we need.  If JG is doing this, he gets nothing but plaudits from me.  Along this line, I'd love to see an "oldtimers game" among some of the former Ohio players.  We did this once, back in the '90s I think it was, and it was fun to watch. It was played at halftime of an Ohio game.  Might have to miss looking at the Ohio Dance Team for one game, but I can sacrifice just like the next guy!
