Did anyone else find the "resume builder" win questions Russ had for Groce in the post game interview a bit disconcerting?

i didnt hear it but often they are talking about a resume for an at large bid - im gonna guess that is what it was about - i highly doubt he was talking about his professional career...

Yes they were in the context of our NCAA tournament resume. Not Groce's coaching resume.

Oakland, Northern Iowa and Robert Morris (assuming we beat them) all go on to win their conferences and represent in the NCAA's that will be a good thing. Louisville picking up a #1 seed in the NCAA's will be a good thing as well. As a Cat fan I'm not really thinking at-large yet because with the way this team is playing its on pace to have a bye to the semifinals in Cleveland and be a favorite to win the MAC tourney. Until we lose the status of MAC #1 there is no reason to worry about an at-large berth to the NCAAs. If OHIO drops a couple games in MAC play and Kent becomes that #1 then wins over Kent become crucial for the purposes of at-large discussion.

Spot on thoughts in my opinion Wes.  The only thing I'd add is it's good to have the publicity of the at-large talk if we get it.

That is an excellent point.

Quite frankly, with Ohio's start this year I'd be very disappointed if we didn't make it to the Big Dance. If, and I mean a big if, we can start the conference season at 13-1, win the MAC and it's tournament, could we really obtain a 5th or 6th seeding in the brackets? Way too premature to talk about that now, I know, just fantasizing.

Anyway, even with our start winning the MAC will be very, very difficult. Kent State won last night against St. Peter's on the road and sit at 8-1 themselves. And Akron is deep (but inconsistent right now).

Question: right now, are we the best college basketball team in Ohio? Maybe....

Kent actually was playing on a neutral court (Logan, UT) and played horribly and still won against a pretty bad St. Peter's team.  It was their Morgan State.  They play again tonight and tomorrow (UT-Arlington & Utah State) and hopefully will play better.  Kent has a chance to be a really good team.

I agree with your point though. Akron shows signs that they are coming around to where most people expected them to be and Buffalo can be very tough.

Kent is also a little short-handed right now. Manns didn't make the trip for disciplinary reasons and Porrini saw limited action due to a foot injury.

No.  Slow down.  Let's focus on being the best team in the MAC.

The former may happen.  I don't think Louisville will get a #1.  Frankly, I think they are incredibly overrated.  This doesn't diminish what we were able to do against them, but they've faced one test, Vanderbilt, and won in OT by 2.  I don't seem them winning the Big East, and I am thinking they'll get popped pretty good by Kentucky in 10 days.

I like Ohio and all, but Ohio State? Xavier? I like to think we are a solid #3 team in Ohio right now, but even that could be debated. A lot of solid teams this year in our state.

...and maybe not, Mark. I think even with the injury, the Evil Empire is quite a power. And Kent is ... Kent ... and if Akron plays the way they did at Mississippi State on a consistent basis ... and Xavier ... and Cincinnati ... and Dayton ... and Cleveland State! Wow, this state is deep!

Donuts and Cat4ever:

You are displaying common sense.  There is no place for any of that on this board.  Cease and desist immediately.  You also said something nice about tOSU.  You shall now be hated forever.

We should win our next 3 games.  13-1 would be great.  At that point, throw our record away.  The season begins at 4PM in Bowling Green on January 7th.

Disagree with this in a way.  A 13-1 start, if they can get there, is a very big deal.  Still have work to do though.  Go at least 12-4 in conference play, get to the MAC semifinal game with a bye, and we look at a team with 25 wins and 5 losses at that point (and that excludes Bracketbuster and any MAC tourney play).  That gets them in the conversation for at-large bids before the MAC tourney begins.  Sneak into the AP Top 25 even once, and that helps visibility even more.

I still tend to think it takes getting to the MAC Championship game to secure an at-large bid no matter what OUr resume looks like, but the path has been paved if they win out leading up to BG.

With a healthy Jared Sullinger, I agree with you-at that point OSU is Top 5 material. But my point is that right now, at this very moment Ohio's as hot as any team in Ohio and I'd love it if we were to play OSU right now. I think it would be a close game (at least on a neutral court :).

Xavier is outstanding and I love Gary Waters, but Cleveland State is somewhat inconsistent; they should have just beaten South Florida on the road and lost. According to Waters his team just didn't show up for that game. I think we're better than Cinci and Dayton.

I still think our toughest competition will be in the conference. Injuries happen, teams play tougher than it would otherwise appear on paper, etc. The conference season is just an absolute grind. I do think we're up to it and can win it.

I'd still take Xavier and Ohio State as better teams right now. I hate Ohio State, but they hung with Kansas without Sullinger. That's still a top 25 team without him. With Xavier, it's not like anyone is hurt, they just had a setback due to the fight.

If you were talking at-large, I say we can lose maybe 4 or 5 more times tops. None of them can be terrible losses either. So like 2-2 vs. Kent/Akron, maybe split with Miami, possibly lose the bracket buster and then get bounced in the tournament. I think that would still get us in. Start throwing in a loss to Buffalo, or a random West team, and it gets dicey.

I do think that the MAC can get two teams in this year. However, it all boils down to how the top teams do in the tournament. Say if OU only loses 2-3 games in the conference, but then win the tournament as well, the MAC might still get their usually 1 team in.

Feel free to pick those rankings apart. Only actually seen like half these teams play this year.

We're no shoe-in to get a bid. Does anyone remember the year we won the pre-season NIT with Trent? I'm sure we all thought a bid was in hand that year. Someone said the MAC really begins our season and I agree.

An interesting conversation point.  I think there's no question that with a healthy Sullinger, we'd have a real hard time with OSU simply because we would have massive matchup problems.  Reg is the only one who can matchup size wise.  Had this conversation with a buddy that's a tOSU grad the other day.  I believe without Sully, we can hang with them.  The same type of scenario can be shown for a lot of teams in the above "rankings".

UC and X have a lot of big bodies that would cause us matchup problems.  XU, with their "gangsta" guards, and Freese, are very good no matter how much I dislike them.  UC, while not overly impressive so far, has a lot of size, and good athletes that would give us a tough game. They're better than you're giving them credit for here.  I don't think there's any way that Dayton, Cleveland State or Akron beat UC most of the time.

I know nothing more about Dayton than anyone else here, but they are young this year and on a neutral floor, we beat them most times.  Not sure about at UD Arena though - tough place to play.

On last thing - Miami is better than Wright State based on what I've seen of them both.  WSU doesn't have much without Mays.

Didn't that team have double-digit losses though?  You don't think 25-26 wins get them in consideration for an at-large?

I'll disagree (shocker, I know).  In the past, OSU's depth was an issue.  This year, it is not.  Ravenel does a decent job filling in for Sully, and Williams has looked better in limited time of late, not to mention he's 6'11" and we don't have anyone who could matchup with that size.  DJ vs Craft would be a matchup for the ages.  However, then the issue (as teams recently have found out) is Deshaun Thomas.  We would have no answer for him (to be fair, nobody really does).  He's listed at 6'7" but plays much bigger.  And he can take you inside or outside.  We would have a really tough time with him.

Then there's that Buford guy.  OSU vs OU right now would remind me of OU vs Tennessee two years ago.  We may be comparable athletically, but they have more length which is what caused us fits against the Vols.

The reason we didn't get a bid that year is partly because Ball State won the tournament and Miami beat us twice - so Ball State got the automatic bid, Miami got an at-large bid and we went to the Post season NIT - at the time people said all we had to do was win the quarterfinal game against Eastern Michigan and we were in but we couldn't even do that - the reason that team didn't get in is because we finished the season something like 10-10 - as much as it sucked we played our way out of the tournament...

When Boals went down that team lost a huge piece. And depth was not great.
