The two times a year I hate watching OU and UB play. I'm gonna be rooting on OU but its always hard to root against UB (hometown team and used to love them back when they had Battle, Bortz, and Idbihi)

This is going to be a tough game for OU. Buffalo has already beaten Dayton (by 29 points on road) and Kent State this year. And they probably should've beaten Temple on road (blew 6 point lead with 2 mins left on flagrant foul)

I'd say they have the best bigs in the MAC. McCrea has been great as of late and Mitchell Watt has really stepped his game up this year to the point where he is a force as well.

The thing that UB lacks though is good guard play. They have Filzen but he is more of a shooter than a passer.

Besides that, they rely on Oldham and Watson and they both struggle with consistency.

As a OU fan, I want them to win but I really have no clue who's gonna pull this game out. Its strengths vs. weaknesses for both teams.

We have the guards, they have the bigs. In the end, they're a really good rebounding and defensive team and I think I'm gonna pick UB to pull this game out even though I'll be rooting for Ohio

So, I'm hoping we can keep this loss under 20 points.  And, I'm dead serious.  I wonder if we'll get a single rebound all game (OK, no serious on that comment.)

We are in a serious slump and very easy to beat right now and our next three opponents (Buffalo - Akron - Kent) are tough teams and must be salivating.

They're certainly in the conversation.  Ivo, Smith, Keely are gonna have to elevate their games of late if a "W" is going to be the result.  I don't know enough about the Beefs, but if guard play isn't their forte, can we realistically press them and try to push the tempo?

I feel good about this game. I think it can be said that UB should be a relative favorite given our recent performances.  That said, i hope that gives our guys the added motivation they need to come out hustling and playing hard for 40 mins.  Also, if we can get out of the 3-point shooting funk we're in then we should be alright.

It's a good question but the truth is that we(UB) are actually a pretty up-tempo team. Our bigs aren't heavy and they run the floor pretty well. The teams that have beaten us have been perimeter shooting teams. We played a zone the entire time against BYU and Princeton and both teams picked us apart from the outside. Other than that, nobody outside of Greene on Kent has given our inside players any trouble. Watt and McCrea dominated Temple and if not for some horrible last minute coaching we would've definitely knocked them off (one week before they beat Duke on the same floor). I would say this is the most talented UB team I've ever seen and I was in Cleveland in 04-05(which actually sparked me to create this account years ago on here). We just need to find some consistent guard play and keep our bigs out of foul trouble.

If I ever start a folk-rock trio group...I have a name picked out.

Kenny Loggins would ask if he could join but we'd tell him to stick it and go bother Messina.

I've said a few times that a team with bigs would give us fits.  This is our first test.  A win here would be a huge step in the direction we want to be heading.

Coach is right, no toughness leads to more losses.
If we play D like we did before Christmas we win.

Opened at 7. Down to 6.5. Even if we were still playing well that line is too big.

Thoughts on tonight's game:
  • UB is flat out a good team this year.  The demons that plagued them in the past aren't plaguing them as much this season.  For example, they are holding opponents to only 39% FG%.  Buffalo usually doesn't defend that well.  Plus, they actually have a positive assist to turnover ratio.  In the past, the Beefs have turned it over a whole bunch, but they are executing more carefully this year.
  • They are dominating folks on the boards.  Ohio must, must, must not allow them to set up office in the lane and keep getting stick backs on offense.  Will be interesting to see if the refs allow Ohio to play physical enough to outrebound them.
  • Buffalo, due to their imposing inside players (McCrae, Watt and Robinson) are getting to the line a lot more than their opponents.  Ohio must find a way to neutralize these guys without sending them to the line 35 times.  The Beefs, like Ohio, are hitting only a mediocre 66% from the line.
Buffalo doesn't seem to be real good at forcing a lot of turnovers.  Ohio must take advantage of this in executing the offense.
  • Buffalo has good guards but I think Ohio will have an advantage there.  I think we'll be quicker in the backcourt.  Gotta turn these guys over and get some points in transition.  With Watt looming to block shots and the Beefs playing better defense all around, we don't want to just try to grind out a win in the half court.
  • It's a nightmare to try to double down on their bigs while simultaneously stopping Filzen and Barnett from draining threes.  But this is a task Ohio must do a decent job at in order to come out of the Convo with a win.

UB is 298th in turnover rate. They still cough it up a lot (22.6%).

First half observations:
  • Free throws need significant work (10-17)
  • Refs are killing the flow to this game (imagine that)
  • 3 point shooting started hot but went ice cold after the first 4 minutes (3 of 5 at the first media timeout to 3 of 13)
  • OUr defense looks solid causing 2 shot clock violations
  • OUr players are fighting for rebounds and are outrebounding a team that has +10 average for rebounds on the season

If they another three tonight, they ought to run a thousand laps tomorrow.  Taylor steals, their bigs are slow to transition, Taylor passes to Cooper, he has a lane to the bucket and instead he tries a brick three.   LOUSY.

Offut been doing a pretty decent job taking charges tonight.  Not something the shows up as a statistic specifically, but he's caused havoc for Reggie Witherspoon's team.

Buffalo is playing very good D at times tonight.  If they were a better offensive team, they would be running away with it.  They're shot selection is worse than ours and they can't hang onto the ball.

If we ever start making open shots, and quit taking stupid three's, we'll start seeing that % come up.  Until then...

Mitchell Watt is still a punk. Grabbing jerseys all night. Nate Gerwig would be proud.

I got the feeling last night was a lot of students' first time at a basketball game. A lot didn't really know what to do and left early.

Two favorite plays last night: Offut taking the charge on 2-1 fast break to wipe off McCrea's dunk. Ricardo following his missed three for a layup...a guard shooting from the top of the key is probably going to fall back to eliminate the possibility of a fast break, but he saw the opening and made the hustle play.
