It's my understanding that  Baumholz has the only uniform number hanging from the rafters that has been retired.

I was wondering the same thing Mike.

If I remember correctly, when they retired Baumholtz' number, Ed Sears was actually wearing it during the game it was retired but then wore #55 the rest of the season.

If they change Ric's number though I wonder what they will change it to... Sears changed his by just going up a number, but on the current team 21, 22 and 23 are already taken.

#19 maybe??

The number isn't being retired, it's being honored.  I still remember Ed looking up at the rafters that night, then down at his shirt, then up at the rafters...................

If they don't retire his number that is just bush league.  Why do this day then?  Why such a big deal if you are just going to parade him out at half time and have him wave his hand in the air?  Terrible.

Just like Luckett and Jamerson, his jersey will hang in the rafters and he'll be in the Hall of Fame. Given the relative dearth of available numbers, it's a common practice in NCAA schools to retire jerseys, not numbers.

I don't think there is a major difference between honoring the number and retiring it.  Does it really matter that someone else might wear the number again?  Gary was 33 as a freshman, then changed it to 20 later.  On a side note, even if Ricardo wanted to change his number to 19, he can't.  That is an illegal number.  Numbers can only have digits from 0-5.

For me, I think that there is a big difference between honoring someone's number and not letting anyone else wear it.  Of course, I realize that I am in the minority on this one.  Kinda like I understand and like what being a first ballot hall of famer means in baseball.

Just guessing, but for Refs to use the hand signals at the scorers table when they call fouls...Hard to signal 9-6 in a compact motion.

You have to pay some sort of fee in the NBA to have a non 0-5 number. Also, everyone knows most of the players in the NBA.

They are retiring his jersey so they can honor him at the Convo and get a large crowd. As for the Bobcats hall of fame, that always occurs in the fall during a football game. He will be inducted into that next year

Jersey nos fall under the rules adopted by the GOverning body for which you are playing and their approach.

NFHS which governs HS works on the convention that signalling fouls is done one handed and the nos 0-5 are used followed by the signal as to type of foul committed being signalled with the off hand.

NCAA has a similar rule.

The NBA and FIBA has their own rules as well as the Olympics who use FIBA  rules. COrrectly the NBA does use any number up to 99...and the refs and scoring table know the players in the league by name and number.

Each league worldwide has rules but generally use FIBA. Thing s like inbounding under your basket and throwing it into the back court is an over and back in those situations. Only coaches being able to call time outs vs players on the flor screaming TO.....different rules anyone playing in the Olympics or overseas need to master.

Limitations on uni numbers are, to me, as dumb as not allowing the offense in football to have as many guys as they want in the huddle.

Stupd rules which add nothing of note...football rule reversal would spice things up.

I played HS ball in Ohio and back then we wore even numbers at home and odd numbers on the road. For example if you were 10 at home, you were 11 on the road. I wonder if they still do this.

No they don't still do this. Sounds more like a league or school rule than a state rule.

The number of folks in the huddle thing is a little confusing to me. I thought the rule was always that you couldn't break the huddle with more than 11, which is easy to see as being deceptive to the defense because you could line up 12 and force teh defense to try to decide whom to cover before you send someone off the field just before the snap. However, lately I've heard it called just for the number IN the huddle. anyway... in general it's to prevent the offense from having an undue advantage.

It may add nothing to you, the fan, but the rule serves a purpose.
