Purdue released their non-conference schedule. That makes them the first of 365 to make that announcement. For us, we have...

vs. Illinois State
vs. Marshall (I think the series is still going and they owe us)
vs. Sun Belt in week one. If you go straight up on NET, we were fourth in the MAC and JMU was fourth in the Sun Belt. App State was fifth. If they want to avoid repeat matchups maybe we get South Alabama who finished third in the Sun Belt

Was UNC Asheville a H/H? We’d face IJ if that’s the case. RMU wouldn’t be a bad opponent again, coming off a tourney appearance even with the roster turnover.

Also, I thought MAC/SBC matchups were based on closest in overall net rankings, not net rankings based on final conference standings.

App State is 170 and we’re 179, so it’s likely a rematch there since Marshall (Net 177) is already on the docket.

Looks like Akron and UMass will be in the Paradise Jame along with Charleston, Iona, Evansville, Oregon State, Yale, and Green Bay.

I would love to see some P6 schools.

Wouldn't it be prudent to attempt to schedule some Tier 2 (net) teams from the mid major conferences?

Anyone know if we’ll partake in another tourney this season?

Listening to the radio show last week I thought I heard Coach Boals say they were playing in a tournament in Daytona Beach.

If true that should mean the Sunshine Slam - an 8-team event with two four-team brackets and an on-campus game. I don't know whether we'd be a host team or visiting team for the campus game. Stony Brook is the only team officially in that field right now and they're a visiting team.

I can't find anything about the Boardwalk Battle, also in Daytona.

We did do Baha Mar and Myrtle back-to-back. With the shift in the landscape, these destination tournaments seem to be an easy path to filling out the non-conference with some decent opponents in one swoop.

Just looking at last years Sunshine Slam field, we’d likely be in the Stony Brook bracket side if true.

Last year’s Beach Bracket - Clemson, Penn State, Fordham, San Fran.

Last year’s Ocean Bracket - IPFW, Radford, Chicago State, Drexel.

Seems to be divided between mid-major and P6.

San Fran had a NET ranking of 64 this past season (108 before). Fordham is coming off a pretty bad season with a NET of 239, but was at 134 (while coming from the A10) the previous season and prior to being named to the field.

Radford is coming off of a 161 Net Ranking, 185 for Drexel, and 156 for IPFW. Chicago State is atrocious at 358. Given we just completed a 179 NET rankings season, our reality is likely the Ocean Bracket.

CMU was also in the 2023 Ocean Bracket field with Milwaukee, Stetson, and Siena.

It's less about NET results and more about our status as a program. We have recently bought home games with Chicago State and Radford. If we scheduled San Fran and/or Fordham, I would expect those to be home/homes.

NET rankings indicate the status of our program, far more than a few buy games. Furthermore, those rankings are on par with recent Ocean Bracket participants than it is MWC, WCC, and A10 schools. Over the last 3 seasons, we’re 16-16, 19-14, and 20-13, out of the MAC with no marquee non-conference wins or conference titles.

Do you really believe the Sunshine Slam organizers could sell a Clemson and its fan base on Ohio being in their four team bracket for a destination tournament?

The status and results of our program in recent years, is exactly why our tourney fields have and will continue to be just ok — because we have been just that. There’s no draw to anyone besides this board. Start winning MAC titles and rip off a 20+ win seasons in a row and that changes.

I don't think Clemson and Penn State fans are exactly packing their bags to see Fordham and San Francisco either. San Francisco has a pulse now as solidly the third best program in the WCC behind Gonzaga and St. Mary's. Fordham hasn't been to the tournament since 1992. Meanwhile, we have a bit of a brand as a mid major (helped by a winning FBS football program) that has sprung multiple NCAA tournament upsets in recent memory. If placement in the better bracket is about what's the better draw for attendance and TV viewership, we come out on top CLEARLY over Stony Brook, Milwaukee, Radford, Stetson, Chi State, CMU, Fordham, and arguably San Fran.

I appreciate your fanhood and optimism, but again, I think this is more of a bias statement than factual in the present moment.

San Fran has won 20 or more games in 5 out of the last 6 seasons (including 4 straight) from when the Boals era started in more premier conference and has finished higher in Net Rankings. We've won just 20 more game twice in that span.

San Fran just won 23 and 25 games back-to-back years. In that span San Fran has
beaten St. Mary's and non-conference schools like Minnesota, Vanderbilt, St. Louis.

Our tournament wins from 5 and 13 years ago isn't a draw to anyone today. It's why Akron with its recent MAC titles is in a pretty solid destination tournament field and we're unlikely to be.

You got me with being more of a draw than Stony Brook, Milwaukee, and Stetson, and Chicago State. However, it's hard to make the argument over schools with higher Net Rankings. Like I said, we start winning more moving forward and this all changes.

8 years ago in the Charleston Classic. The 8 team field included Hofstra, Auburn, Indiana State, Temple, Old Dominion, and Dayton.

That’s the difference with the Sunshine Slam. It’s two 4-team brackets that are clearly divided between P6 and mid-major.

One thing to note — there are regional opening round games where the P6 schools host the mid-majors.
However, even if a mid-major school wins, it’s still designated to the Ocean/Mid-Major Bracket upon arrival in Florida. As evidenced by the 2022 bracket. Austin Peay beat South Florida at South Florida but it didn’t make a difference.

https://www.sunshineslam.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/S...

So, if we’re in the Sunshine Slam, we’ll still get a big game out of it. However, the reality still seems to point to the mid-major side of the field after the fact regardless of outcome.

We’re in the same bracket as FAU, George Mason, and Loyola Marymount.

Not exactly a destination bracket as this is the better bracket. Stony Brook, Bethune-Cookman, Pacific and Jacksonville are on the other end. Good news is at least these games will be on CBSSN as opposed to Flo or BallerTV or whatever. And if the format is the same as last year we should get a home game with one of the lower bracket teams.

If I had to guess —
Jacksonville @ FAU
Pacific @ Loyola Marymount
Stony Brook @ Ohio
Bethune-Cookman @ George Mason

Getting FAU and George Mason would be ideal after.

This is a good group of teams to be matched up with. George Mason is a solid A10 program. FAU is still decent even if they've dropped off since losing their head coach and Loyola Marymount is at least halfway respectable. I'm perfectly fine with this field from an Ohio standpoint. Some winnable games that could go either way.

I think FAU is gonna be fun to watch.

They gobbled up a ton of portal guys. Looks like they looked at every available 4 star recruit and was like, yeah I'll take him. 3-4 committed. They lost Baba Miller to Cincinnati, but one of the portal kids is a 6'10" PF who was the 72nd ranked player out of HS. Also scooped a PG from IU, though he was injured or fell off hard after averaging 11/3/3 as a freshman at Stanford.

While I was down that rabbit hole, AJ Brown was a 4-star transfer with a 92 grade in the portal. Kinda crazy. We all know he's good, but he was graded higher as a transfer than a HS recruit.

Anyway, I was on Masons basketball board and they're really high on a bunch of transfers Tony Skinn was able to get - he also brought in his son who was on Kevin Durant's AAU team.

Dont know much about LMU, but should be a solid field.
