I can imagine, since this is a night game, that this will help attendance from sibs weekend a lot.  If my sib was coming down for the weekend, I would suggest that we go to the Basketball game, and then head uptown around 9:30/10 when the game is over.  I think the timing is perfect.

How old is your sib??

I think it can be an 8K sort of crowd. Keep in mind we may be competing against hockey for attendance. Their conference tournament is this weekend at Bird and I know they have a game Friday night. I don't know the structure of their tournament but there is a possibility that they play a Saturday evening game.

Looks likely that Ohio hockey will be playing at the same time as the basketball game.

Wonder when UNCA is planning on traveling back home?  A major southern snow storm is expected during the day on Sunday.

I may be in the minority but I love Bracket Buster Saturday.  I'm a big Maryland fan and used to pay attention to the ACC but my interest has waned through the years.  I pay more attention to the MVC than the ACC anymore.  And whether the games actually help or hurt is a different story.  It's a day with a ton of interesting games between teams with some great storylines.  Akron and Buffalo both have a shot to really heighten the conferences profile.  Akron is facing a must win at Oral Roberts.  A loss eliminates any hope of the MAC getting two in.  There are literally about 30 games that I find interesting this weekend.

I agree with you completely.  I love this weekend because it's a showcase for basketball teams that don't get nearly enough credit for how good they play, and how entertaining they are.   These teams are fighting, scrapping and clawing to get recognized. Some of the bracketology clowns already say that Murray St could miss an at large if they lose this, plus miss out on their conference tournament championship game.

Looking over this teams stats they are impressive, shooting wise.
We haven't played a team that is as fast passed as this in quite a while.
I am concerned based on what I see on paper.
I we come out lazy we could be in trouble early.
We have to play with more energy then this opponent.

Easy guys- the folks getting 'chippy' are some of our Ohio natives that attended UNCA.. Most of those alums will be in Athens for the game as I understand.. Try not to hold the OU vs OSU stuff against all Bulldog fans!

Looking forward to a good game between our 2 teams that seem to have similar styles of play.. Neither team needs this game so it will be interesting to see how it goes.. Also we had a guy suffer a concussion the other night so I doubt we'll be at full strength.. Enjoy the game!

Might be a dumb question but can I ask why players are tweeting less than 2 hours before the game? Shouldn't we be thinking about the game?

It s the culture. If you do not have to be in the COnvo till an hour and ahalf before the game what does it matter? ST shouts out to the Bobcat nation and Big reg is tweeting in the car on the way to the locker room. Kind of the culture of kids these days.

I am impressed by programs like Purdue where Twitter goes dark form Midnite Madness till they lose in the NCAA but that is not going to happen in a lot of programs. Ultimate respect for their coach and for themselves as basketball players to do this but then again.....they were out at 330 am celebrating Barlows birthday when Byrd and Barlow got picked up Thursday night. Looks like Barlow will be available as it was his last chance. Big ten player with alleged pot problems.......hmmmmm. Transfer potential? Pops was a stud at ND. Wonder where Kelsey will land. Byrd out for 1 game suspension.

If people want to watch a club sport over a scholarship sport, so be it. Absolutely mind-boggling to me though.

Say what you will, but it's a good program with a good following. There are also a lot of people who are more entertained by hockey than basketball (not Ohio basketball vs. Ohio hockey, but the sports in general). Even though it's a club team, the coaches still recruit.

I'm one  of those, much preferring Hockey to Basketball.

+1.  Loved hoops in college 25 years ago, but now it is hard to watch at times.  All the timeouts that have been added, increased FT, etc.  The game has lost its flow.

As opposed to hockey - with 2 period breaks, and what - if your lucky - a couple goals a game - jeesh.......

Figured I should throw a quick post out here after all the talk that has gone back and forth.

First - congrats to OU.  Obviously played much better than us and beat us really bad.  Not having Stephenson really hurt as some of the other guys that can fill that Foward role (Jaron Lane, Quinard Jackson) really are a bit soft and not as physical...Especially Lane.  Nonetheless you guys beat us bad.

Just a couple thoughts -- obviously we had some really good looks early and could've kept it close but everything seemed to go in and out.  For OU -- if you guys hit free throws you would've beaten us by 30...That combined with all the attempted alley-oops.

The fan in me knows how bad we played -- but the truth is we have a lot of guys (outside Primm/Dickey) that just aren't "tough" and don't like physical basketball.  You guys just were more physical. First half was really tough to watch....sloppy basketball for both teams. Wish DJ Cunningham would've been healthy -- even if we shoot as poorly as we did an offensively capable big man like him would've changed the game.

Hopefully some of you will make the trip to Asheville next year?

I believe we've started doing our return games two years out, so the BB and return aren't both home/both road each year.  Not 100% sure, but you may not see Ohio in Asheville until the 2013-2014 season.

Might be right...i can't remember... Am curious about the arena in Athens.  Was talking to one of the Asheville alums (fellow Ohioan) I came with about the building... Obviously a lot of history and a great atmosphere with a big crowd...But any push for something newer?  Was just thinking -- as small as our budget is we just put in a brand new 40 million or so dollar arena (much smaller, seats 3500-4k) on campus.  Obviously you guys have a great -- historic -- building....but wonder if it affects recruiting at all, especially with Akron, KSU and some other MAC schools with smaller more modern facilities?

I can't say how it affects recruiting -- I think there is some feeling of a big-time arena compared to smaller, gym-style places like Kent and Akron have that might help us, but the age may hurt us.  Akron's arena, actually, is nearing 30 years old, and Kent's building is older than ours by a fair bit.

Nicer arenas in the conference are probably Ball State's Worthen Arena (though I wasn't a huge fan -- felt bland to me) and Toledo's Savage Arena.

There's virtually no push I've heard of for a new facility at all.  We pretty much all love the Convo, and I think would rather see a few remodels (locker rooms and training areas have had some recent work, with more to come from a recent donation), with perhaps some updated seating in areas, and (this is really the biggest gripe among the fan base) a hanging video board.

Edit: almost forgot, bathrooms could use a redo, too.

Yeah video boards where the big thing.  Didn't realize Kent's building is that old -- but UofA obviously has the big jumbo-tron in the middle and KSU has video boards in the corner.  Our new building has those as well (alla Dayton).

Obviously you guys have those boards in the corners -- but no replays or video which kinda surprised me a bit.  The building is great -- guess I was just surprised by the locker-rooms (visiting -- obviously didn't see home side) and also some of the little nice to have additions (video boards, light dimmers so you can truly black out arena during intros & bring lights right back on, scoreboard that isn't partially blocked, etc.).

Love that your student section is on sideline but the 30-40 students under the basket thing is a bit awkward....seems like it could be solved at minimal cost and actually bring the bleachers down a bit lower behind the baskets?

Akron is desperate for a new arena. Kent's is one of the worst in the conference.

They have a couple of thick headed guys over there  that can't comprehend why we would be disappointed getting "awarded" a team whose RPI was an achor instead of a boost.  Plus the forced "no respect" thing is comical.

uncafan:  It's nice to get the perspective of someone from outside the region on the Convo.

I think the building just needs upgraded a bit and spruced up.  Overall, I think it's still an excellent venue for
basketball.  Problem is funding.  Every other athletic project has gotten priority.  We have a football stadium that had has needed major upgrades.

As posted by others, there have been some upgrades in the Convo in the last few years but they aren't visible.

I still think, overall, that's it's the best venue in the MAC for basketball.  Sight angles are superb.  I'll agree that the video boards/scoreboards leave something to be desired.

I disagree that Worthen (Ball State) is better.  Their amenities aren't that much better than the Convo's.  Last time I was there the scoreboards were behind the times.  As for Savage at Toledo...the new amenities re:  outer concourse, bathrooms, concessions, corporate suites, scoreboards, etc. are better than the Convo's, but I still think the sight lines, etc., for actually watching the game are superior at the Convo.

EMU is a nice facility but overall I like our's better.

If we could refurbish the Convo, I think most folks would like to see about 2000-3000 seats removed (our current capacity is 13,080) and some sort of luxury suites installed.  If we built from scratch...I think most would like to see a 10,000 seat facility that would be more versatile and multi-purpose.

Glad you folks were able to build a new facility on your campus.

I'm a big fan of putting bleachers on the floor behind the baskets. Certainly adds another element when you can place students there as well. It would completely change the atmosphere.
