This one is ripe for the taking. We can assure ourselves a spot in the semifinals and nail the coffin shut on the Flashes. I want this one. I want it bad.

After the BG game, Kent is either going to be fired up or demoralized.  I want to see us come out of the gate swinging.  I want to see us have the same swagger for Kent (and our future opponents) as we had for Akron.  Get up early and put it away quick like we did with Kron.

Kent's not the Kent of past years, but I would be shocked if they don't come out with a huge effort. They're going to try to stick it up our a$$es. We have to be ready.

Close, but not officially.  A win would still require a Buffalo loss to Akron or a follow-up win at Miami to assure ourselves a spot in the semifinals.

I think when he said we can (as opposed to if we win, we will), he meant a win coupled with a Buffalo loss.

That's what I think will happen, yes.

I would guess every fan board in America overreacts to a victory and to a loss. That's what fans do.

With all that said, while I'm not pessimistic at all regarding this years team, I'm in no way thinking either of the next two games are going to be locks.  I'm not looking at NCAA Tournament sites, #2 seeds or anything else because I think we're probably more than 1 point underdogs tomorrow night.  We're coming off a huge effort and Kent State is not only at home, but they're coming off a bad loss; remembering the pounding we layed on them in Athens and reading plenty of bad press about themselves.  I'm hoping Kent comes in tomorrow, we give them a huge punch and they lay down.  I just don't think that's going to happen and I think this is not only a HUGE game for us, but it's going to be a war.

As I said initially, fans overreact.  We're on the high of winning at Buffalo and thumping Akron.  But a little over a week ago we couldn't win on the road and were losing to EMU and Toledo--and the season was over for us.  Kent State ain't EMU, Toledo and they probably aint Buffalo either.  That's a talented team that if woken up, is going to be a real handful.  Not trying to be a pessimist, but the #2 and a W aint a gimme tomorrow night.

And finally, I would think Akron is going to thump Buffalo tomorrow night.  Guess we'll know all the answers this time tomorrow night.

Right; we have no reason to be overconfident.  23-6 less 16-1 at home yields 7-5 on the road.  Anyone want to make the argument that 7-5 road is a really fine record?  Or, we could stay tough and bumpa the road record up.

If we play D like we did these past 4 games we win. It's that simple.

I do.

Overall, that's a pretty good road record.  I'll admit that the MAC road record still leaves something to prove.  But I think this team has shown it has the ability to rise up to the occasion on the road.

Our offensive execution is a bigger question mark than our defense.  For the first time that I can think of we are a more consistent defensive team than we are on offense.

Kent's defense is so-so. If the defense does what it has and we exploit KSU's weakness on the boards, the offense won't need to pick up much slack.

If the offense is on, it won't be close.

JSF:

Kent seems turnover-prone as well, which should help the 'Cats as well...do the stats reflect that, or is it just my incorrect observation?

On average, no. But unlike Ohio, which tends to be consistent in its turnover rate, Kent varies wildly from game to game. They either hold onto it very well or cough it up a lot. So against a team that likes to force turnovers (like OU), yeah, it's a weakness.

JSF...I think we've got a real shot at winning this game tonight...Vegas seems to think so too as we are just a one point underdog.  But have you considered the desperation factor for Kent?  Could offset their recent woes.

I think we almost have to zone them to control Greene and their dribble penetration and hope they aren't on fire from three.

Sure, but desperation is just as likely to help as it is to harm. And I've been hearing some really negative things coming from the program. They might be ready to collapse. I think we're going to learn a lot tonight.

One thing that has me worried about this game is the refereeing.  Kent has a distinct home-court advantage in that sense.  In their MAC games this year at home, they are getting NINE more free throw attempts than their opponents (they average 24 while their opponents average 15, a total difference of 144 to 92 from the line).  That's a BIG difference that could easily swing this game if the pattern continues.

To see if the numbers were representative of maybe their play rather than the refs, I looked at their free-throw shooting on the road.  It's pretty even there, with both Kent and their opponents averaging 16 or so free throws a game (16.1 for Kent, 16.8 for their opponents).  I hope that the game is called pretty cleanly and that the better team wins tonight.  This is something I will be watching in hopes of Ohio getting a fair shake.

Ohio State is 5-4 on the road.  Michigan is 3-6 on the road.

So yea, it's tough to win on the road in ncaa basketball more than any other sport.

I genuinely feel good about how we match up with anyone in the country if the offense is on.  This team is a machine if the offense is on.

DJ's vision has been incredible the last few games. That's got to be a big part of what's made the offense go recently.
