In UB's case, we have definitely inflated our football numbers over the years, however I think our basketball is undercounted. We packed the crap out of our gym which holds 6,300 in the later half of this season and somehow only managed to get ticket sales of around 4,000. Even the local newspaper who often makes fun of our lac of a student turnout had this to say about this year's game against BGSU:

In the House: Great crowd. Great atmosphere. But I have a beef. If there were only 4,015 on hand the capacity of Alumni Arena can't be more than 5,000 because there weren't that many empty seats. And if the capacity is over 6,000, as they say, then someone can't count. So which is it?

As someone that covers UB sporting events when I am home, I can absolutely confirm that this is true. UB definitely inflates football attendance but their basketball attendance is ALWAYS smaller than what it looks. I remember a game vs. Bonaventure this year that appeared to be a sellout or only single seats available (capacity over 6,000) and they announced the crowd under 4,500. Way more than 75% of the seats where filled that day.

I don't think Alumni is actually 6000 seat capacity, I think thats the number thats inflated. That may be the number that the fire marshall will let them put in there, but to get 6000 spectators in there you'd need to include a fair amount of standing room only  on the running track and in the open spaces/bounce-house areas on the ground floor corners. Just my humble opinion.

Count 'em sometime.  Probably among the easiest arenas to do, given that every section is pretty much a perfect rectangle.

My only question is how did UB use to fit over 9,000 people in Alumni Arena before the chairbacks??? If Alumni only truly holds 5000 then did chairbacks seriously eliminate 4000+ capacity?
