Normally here at Ohio, we're very critical of the O-Zone and our fan turnout because we consider ourselves the best fans in the MAC. While there is no question we are the best fans in the MAC in my opinion, I was wondering which places are in the running for the 2nd best fans in the MAC.

I've been watching some UB games recently and have been very impressed with their turnout, but more importantly, the obnoxiousness and loudness of their fans. They haven't always been like that so it surprised me.

I wrote an article about how the Buffalo community is starting to embrace them. I believe that this can happen anywhere in the MAC (except Eastern Michigan). Here's the link: www.queencitysports.net/is-buffalo-finally-getting-behind-ub-basketball/

So, who do you guys have as the top basketball fan bases in the MAC after us?

UB, Akron, Kent State, Ball State, Toledo????

Buffalo was 7th in the MAC in attendance this year. For having a good team and being in a big metro area with no other bball teams, not impressive.

In the context of the MAC an average of 3,000 is decent and 5,000 is good. Anything beyond 5,000 is excellent attendance. For the Cats below 5,000 for a game is poor attendance and 8,000 is considered good. The biggest news I can see from the attendance report is Miami's attendance once regularly in the top of the league is now entering Eastern Michigan territory and the same in football too when actual people are observed.

Toledo and Ball State have consistently shown the best potential (outside of us) in basketball fan support.

i wonder what a switch to semesters will do for our average attendance - obviously help it, but once you start averaging 7500 a game i think it puts you in an elite crowd... not in the mac but in the country.

I thought the crowd at Buffalo was awesome last night, both in numbers and in how they participated.  As it turned out, the Beefs needed the energy from that crowd to fuel their late comeback to beat BGSU.

On one hand I want to just ignore this thread and then like looking at a car crash on the highway, I can't.  The reason I comment on our attendance is threads just like this.  Clearly, everyone in the MAC is operating by a different set of standards.  For those of you who have spent the whole season in the Convo, simple observation indicates that Schauss and company consistently overstate our attendance by 20 to 25%.   Until there is a stated standard for reporting attendance, our figures are nothing more than resume padding figures.

That said,there is no doubt that we have the highest average attendance in the MAC, the best band and the best basketball environment.  This would be a perfect time to draw an analogy to the four stooges running ...  I guess I shouldn't go there at the risk of ending up in Siberia.

I'm not sure what's so hard to understand about tickets sold being the # announced for attendance.

Every school inflates their numbers.  These numbers are not "tickets out", but usually just taking the actual attendance and adding a certain percentage.  I can tell you for sure that some of those numbers are false from the NCAA, realistically OU would fall within the top 75.

Until someone in the Convo tells us officially how they calculate attendance, i have to go with my eyes.  Some games when we check in they scan our tickets, sometimes they simply rip off a stub.  Even McKinney will tell you that we used to guess with 100 of the actual folks in attendance.  Now it's like picking a number out of a hat.   

Again, it really doesn't matter until folks start citing attendance numbers to make a point.

You said every team operates by a different standard but have no evidence to support that.  That's why I commented.

You have X # of tickets that are sold in advance + walk up tickets sold + Student IDs scanned = paid & reported attendance.   Tickets sold in advance would account for all season ticket holders, tickets for families of team, tickets donated to the community (I'm sure many go unused), advance single game ticket sales and perhaps a # of seats alotted for the opposing team whether used or not. Scanning or tearing off a ticket for entry doesn't mean anything other than you can go through the gate.

Out of curioisty have you directly asked Schaus how attendance was counted?  If so, what was his answer?

I have a feeling regardless of the answer you are inclined not to believe it just to perpetuate your point of view.

Oh well, as you stated it really isn't very important.

Question: Due to family matters my wife & I -- for the first time in years -- missed two home games.  One was in late December and the other in early January.  We are season ticket holders.   Were we counted in the paid attendance?  If we were, I don't see it as a great accounting sin.  (For the record: prior to this I don't think we've missed even one home game for more than a decade.)

I'll take it a step further.  Had Saturday's game with Miami been a home game next year, the students would have been on spring break as they will be during the MAC tournament.  Here's to hoping we're blessed with a bunch of road MAC games during the first two weeks in January next year.

And to long driver's comment, I actually emailed the ticket office last evening on how we count attendance.  I'll let you know what they say.

YES OCF, you were counted in attendance...and I had 4 being counting in attendance without me being there for about 6-7 games this year.  Every school reports tickets sold.  Tickets sold does not equal who actually came.  Whether or not they scan your ticket or rip off the stub is irrelevant.  It really isn't hard to understand.

The degree to which schools are "inflating" attendance would depend on how many no shows they have, which would largely correlate with how many highly discounted tickets they sell.  We've seen this a lot if MAC football where they'll even give away thousands to charity and count them as paid attendance.  You could argue the family pack (in which it is cheaper to get the season tickets than pay individually for 3 games) may inflate our numbers more than the average school...But I would say on a percentage basis, we are on the lower end in the MAC in terms of attendance inflation...Because our fans actually WANT to go to the games.

Just to throw some fuel into the fire.  From a student perspective, I would say about 1/3 of the time I never even received a ticket, they just waved everyone on through after showing them the ID.  And never did they scan ID's (maybe the Miami game, but I actually bought a ticket for that one).  So who knows how well the students were even counted.

In UB's case, we have definitely inflated our football numbers over the years, however I think our basketball is undercounted. We packed the crap out of our gym which holds 6,300 in the later half of this season and somehow only managed to get ticket sales of around 4,000. Even the local newspaper who often makes fun of our lac of a student turnout had this to say about this year's game against BGSU:

In the House: Great crowd. Great atmosphere. But I have a beef. If there were only 4,015 on hand the capacity of Alumni Arena can't be more than 5,000 because there weren't that many empty seats. And if the capacity is over 6,000, as they say, then someone can't count. So which is it?
