I do think it would be interesting to dig up what his career record is in March conference tournaments. When I was at OHIO, I witnessed 4 consecutive 1st round MAC tourney losses by Hunter led teams. Any die-hard Bobcat will tell you that he didn't get it done in March as well as he should have with the teams he had. The stat on this would not lie.

I am not denying these facts.  I am saying that the 2012 WCU run should not be lumped into the same "pile of failure in a sadness bowl" that you reference in the above post.

El Gato...you are right. Unfair of me to lump this one in there. It was an awesome run.  I'd still love to know Coach Hunter's career record in MAC/SoCon Tournaments. If I get some time, I'll try to dig it up.

Larry was 9-10 in 12 MAC tourneys and is 6-7 in 7 Southern Conference Tourneys (hard to believe he's been there 7 years already).   At first blush that doesn't look too bad but when you dig in a little deeper it gets ugly.   In 6 of Larry's 11 tournaments (no tourney in 1998) with Ohio he was one and done.  In 5 of those 6 he lost to a lower seed (worse seed) although 4 of those were 4-5 opening round matchups.  Prior to this season Larry had only beaten a higher seed twice and even those have caveats.  In 1999 Ohio was a 5 seed and beat Toledo who was a 2 seed but Ohio had a better conference record than Toledo.  Toledo received the higher seed because they won the West (sound familiar).  The next year Ohio again beat a 2 seed (Ball State) as a 6th seed but had the same conference record.

His record is similar in the SoCon.  He beat a 3rd seed and a 2nd seed this year in an impressive run and came very close to taking down the #1 seed.  But prior to those wins Larry had won four conference tournament games against a 10th seed, an 11th seed and two 12 seeds.  In only three of his 7 tournaments did he lose to a lower seed however. He's also shown a slight improvement on the one-and-dones with just 3 of 7 eliminations coming in the opening round.

not defending Larry's record, but remember that 50% of all participants in single-elim tournaments will be one and done.

Thanks for this OUVan! Some very interesting numbers you lay out here. Take away his lone MAC Tourney Championship at OHIO and it's even uglier.

Agreed but you should be able to beat teams that are seeded lower than you.  Prior to this season Larry had never beaten a team that had a better conference record.    That's 19 seasons as a coach.  And since he's only secured one #1 seed in those 19 seasons he's had opportunities.

I should also add that I am not a Larry basher. I root for him to do well.  Hopefully this turns the tide for him.

Let's not forget that Larry won a National Championship at Wittenberg in 1977, when he had a little more hair:

Wittenberg is in my home town. Back around Christmas, I was talking to an old timer (from my perspective) in Springfield who was also an OHIO alumni. He had fond memories of Coach Hunter both from his time in Springfield and his time in Athens, and was still upset about how his dismissal from OHIO was handled.

As an aside, the guys in that picture wouldnt' look out of place at wittenberg today (in terms of hairstyle).
