Ideally it will be one more year, then Jeff Boals. We shall see.

A poster on the Akron board described it like this:

"Post game quote of the night, KD: Well, they may very well lose their coach but we aren't losing ours."

Hardly seems complimentary.

But "they may very well lose their coach" is quite different than the original post of him saying "he's gone".

The qoute above could actually be taken as "I'm not going anywhere because we lost again, but their coach could be".

Now is not the time to be speculating about Coach Groce's future.

I have a feeling Dambrot meant it as a grudging compliment.

Maybe so. It's probably unfair to try to guess someone's intent when you think he's a jerk.

I Listened to the Akron post game show and the above poster is correct. He praised both the the 'Cats and coach Groce saying that he may be gone not that he's gone. Someone needs to get their facts straight. Not a thing wrong with what Dambrot said. Quit jumping to assumptions and be gracious in victory.

I would think Illinois would be more likely than Nebraska.  Especially since Groce has already proven he can recruit in Chicago.  Yeah, we've all wondered about what would happen if Ohio had a super year this season, and frankly it wouldn't surprise me if Groce were to move on if the right job (i.e., "Big 6" conference) came open, but for Damnbrodt to say it in the press conference is utterly stupid and completely classless.  Frigging moron.  Sore loser.

I hope Groce would like to see the team he built come to full flower next year with the group of seniors he'll have and a year's experience for Smith, Taylor, et al, plus maybe getting Jacobs in there as the final piece of the puzzle.

Isn't the reason Groce won't schedule o$u is because he doesn't want to ever coach against his mentor Matta? In that case I know its a Big 6 gig but he would not only coach against him twice a year but have to battle him in recruiting as well. I hope he doesn't leave just because we'll have everyone back pending anyone deciding they don't want to be a part of another run. But lets enjoy what we have in the present moment and that is MAC Champs and a NCAA Berth in 2 of the last 3 years!

No idea what was said in another venue. Dambrot praised Groce and our program in the postgame press conference.  He said,  "I'm just glad he's young and he's going to get another job. I'm old and I'm not going to get another job." He smiled when he said it. Maybe he said something different on radio or somewhere else. But he didn't use the words "Groce will be gone next year" in the postgame interview room.

Did anyone take the time to think that was maybe a compliment to him that he was too good to not have someone come calling?  Like the Buffalo people, I had heard the Nebraska rumor.

I do think Dambrot meant it as a compliment.  I listened to the Akron post-game show during my drive back to North Canton.  Dambrot was gracious in defeat and generous in his praise of Ohio.

He was very gracious in the press conference too. He praised Groce for the job he's done. He said they had all but two guys back and we had everyone back and he was looking forward to some great battles between the two teams.

Count me in as one of the crowd that considered it a compliment.

As for Groce leaving, he will only go if the job is right. He ain't going to Nebraska.

I cannot see Groce leaving for Nabraska--the job there is a coach killer.  Illinois, yes, but speculation is that the Illini will make a run at Shaka Smart.  Kind of surprising, but right now there just aren't any other high quality jobs available.  Good news is that should Groce leave, Jeff Boals is just 75 miles away!

Some other possible jobs include South Carolina and Mississippi State. However, just like you mentioned, I don't see Groce leaving for these 2 gigs. His next stop is somewhere that can produce a National Championship.

They were paraphrasing.  They left out the next sentence, which was, "He's going to take another job."

John Groce will not go somewhere that he has to potentially face Thad Matta three times a season.  Period.

Dambrot always has a hard time saying positive things about a competitor. In the same radio interview, he implied that Ohio always got the breaks.  He said, "I mean, you've got Baltic hitting long jumpers.  That's pretty questionable."

Unprompted, he praised Ohio for about three minutes last night.

He has to be magnanimous when talking to the press.  It's what he says in other settings, including his coach's show, post-game radio sessions and speeches to Akron fans that illuminate his resentments.

Or the athletic department can pony up and make Groce paid like a big time coach and sell him on the fact maybe one day it will be John Groce court at the Convocation Center.  Guys like Smart (VCU) and Stevens (Butler) stayed why can't Ohio do the same thing?

I think Shaka may stay put here in Richmond a while longer.  He has a great contract, is very involved in the community and has a very young team.  Chris Mooney at Richmond has turned down some offers from larger schools and also seems to enjoy Richmond.  Both are very young and may have even more leverage a few years down the road, in particular Shaka.

BTW: Shaka is a graduate of Kenyon College and  Rob Brandenberg played with Stevie Taylor at Gahanna.

As for Groce, the Wake Forest posters have been talking about him for a year now.  I think they would even take TOS at this point.
