In his post game interview on the radio.  Said, OU might not be losing any players next year but they're going to lose their coach. He's gone."

Somebody on the Beefs board said they heard he was going to Nebraska.  If I were him I would stay another year and get a job that's not a coaching graveyard.

Unless it's something he just can't pass up, I'd think he'd wanna stick around one more year at least to see what this crew is capable of.

He should ask Danny Nee about Nebraska.

An Ohio basketball  coach leaving for Nebraska? - get the feeling Groce does not like him - maybe he stays out of spite.

I have to think that is WAY out of bounds.  If he says that on air, imagine what he says in a recruit's family room.  Dambrot is classless.  He should never leave Akron.  They deserve each other.

+1.

Lots of Huskers here in Kansas City.  They know who Solich is and have some inkling about what he is doing nowadays, but none of them can name a single player on their basketball team.

Maybe losing 2 conference championships in 3 years to Groce has him wishing out loud. was he sitting on Santa's lap when he said it?

That guy is an idiot.  Probably just bitter that no one wants to hire him away from the *&^%$#@# that is Akron.

Unless you are getting a job you can't pass up why would you leave a team that isn't losing any players and can only get better?  We would have to make the Sweet 16 this year for this to be even a possibility for him.  I won't blame him if he leaves after next year, but I pray that he stays for DJ's senior year, he owes that kid that much.

John Groce owns Keith Dambrot......And he will be back next year and win both the MAC regular season and bounce Akron once again in the title game for his third title.  Why would he leave a team that is loaded and perhaps built for a deep NCAA tournament run.

+11ty billion. Straight classlessness.

I hope somebody from his institution calls him out on this negative smear campaign.

I am sure it is hard being on the losing end of a rivalry, but if this kind of matchup continues , it has a potential of a classic "mid-major" (i know..i hate that term too) march rivalry much like gonzaga and st. mary's...and while i am sure we will be on losing end at times, it can only be a good thing for MAC basketball.

I would think Illinois would be more likely than Nebraska.  Especially since Groce has already proven he can recruit in Chicago.  Yeah, we've all wondered about what would happen if Ohio had a super year this season, and frankly it wouldn't surprise me if Groce were to move on if the right job (i.e., "Big 6" conference) came open, but for Damnbrodt to say it in the press conference is utterly stupid and completely classless.  Frigging moron.  Sore loser.

I hope Groce would like to see the team he built come to full flower next year with the group of seniors he'll have and a year's experience for Smith, Taylor, et al, plus maybe getting Jacobs in there as the final piece of the puzzle.

Did anyone take the time to think that was maybe a compliment to him that he was too good to not have someone come calling?  Like the Buffalo people, I had heard the Nebraska rumor.

Coach Dambrot has a habit of saying stupid things and in the past it led to being sent to the basketball equivalent of Siberia. One would think after all of that, he would think before he speaks. Off the top of my head, I can't recall a coach saying such a thing to a coach to which he was supposedly on good terms. I can recall the Bobby Knight-Lou Henson feud and John Chaney and John Calipari dust up, but those coaches didn't make it much of a secret that they didn't like each other. However, this whole Dambrot thing came out of nowhere. Maybe he's jealous that Coach Groce might be getting some looks by some schools in major conferences.

I think we all know that if Coach Groce stayed another season he could really sweeten the pot and the number of big time programs that might show interest in his services. Coach Danny Nee said he left OU because he didn't think he could win a national championship in the MAC and that was his only reason for leaving after the 1985-86 season. However, I seem to recall that after he left Nebraska he stated that he may have had a better chance at winning a national title if he had stayed at OU. I hope Coach Groce talks to Coach Nee.

A poster on the Akron board described it like this:

"Post game quote of the night, KD: Well, they may very well lose their coach but we aren't losing ours."

Hardly seems complimentary.

I would not be surprised at anything at this point -- Groce staying or leaving, but for Dambrot to say that in a press conference is truly tasteless.  I do know that Groce and Schaus are very close, and that Schaus will try to sweeten the pot as much as possible to keep JG.  My guess is that if we would get to the Sweet 16, it would be about a 50-50 chance of Groce leaving.  I have heard through the local grapevine that JG really loves Athens and Ohio University and that his family really likes it here.  That is way different from the Nee situation where his wife hated Athens, kind of like Mrs. TOS.  I'm not saying that he'll stay, but I am saying that his personal priorities from all I've heard are way different from some of our past coaches.  Let's just sit back and enjoy and ride and let what happens happen.  GO OHIO!
