This is really disappointing. I di not think the quarter was finished yet. It seems odd that he would be declared ineligible this week.

I don't get it either... finals don't even start until Monday. If he wasn't in trouble at the beginning of the quarter I don't understand how he's in trouble now. Maybe there was a reason he couldn't miss the last couple days of classes?

Particularly bewildering given that those grades seemed to surface after the extended tourney 2 years ago. Things that make you go hmm.

It sounds like he's still academically eligible. Groce makes it sound like he isn't meeting team standards.

Maybe he is staying in Athens to buckle down and stay eligible so he can play in any post season tournament we get in?  A preempted move with hope to avoid the rumors we heard that Basset was not going to be eligible if we got past Tennessee 2 years ago due to when his, umm, non-existent grades were posted?

Yeah, I don't think he is ineligible, just being disciplined by his coach as a result of poor academics.

Usually the reason is that the athlete failed to go to  classes; or did not meet assignments while they were away last week.  There is a proctor that does check class attendance for each basketball athlete each day.

Yes, this makes more sense after reading the Messenger article that's linked from the home page... Groce says it was his decision to leave Tyquane behind.

So he's not ineligible, but he is in the doghouse.

I support Groce's decision. I also hope Ty takes care of business.

Comes back to the poster on the wall of the locker room (If you didn't see it on the 3rd/4th episode of All In).  There were five team goals on the wall.  #1 is "Graduate From Ohio".  I really admire that this is something that's given priority.  The Coaching Staff could have chosen to put the tournament ahead of that.  I like this decision because no matter how much I want to see OUr teams do well, I don't want them to do well at the expense of academics and a good public reputation for having solid kids as student athletes.

I'm cool with the decision. This may end being one of the biggest life lessons Turk learns. I respect Groce's stance, win or lose. Things like this define a coach and his team.

If he's academically eligible then I'd bring him to Cleveland.  Discipline him later or find another way to do it, don't penalize the entire team's chances to win.  We could really use his services against some of the lengthy athletes that we're about to face especially if our big guys get into foul trouble again.  Hope this decision doesn't cost us.

If we lose because the 9th or 10th guy off the bench didn't make the trip then I'm not going to be upset because Coach did the right thing and held his student athletes to a high standard.

From what I know and can glean about the situation from the posts here, I agree with you JSF.  Academics are a higher priority than athletics, and sometimes statements need to be made.  I suspect the rest of the team understands a bit better now the priorities of the coaching staff of their true purpose of being at OHIO.

From looking at the bench, it appears Kenny was not able to make the trip.   Already had plans?  That leaves Ethan as the only bench big should there become a need.

Also not on the Cleveland trip is senior post Kenny Belton. Belton, seeking an NCAA ruling to get a sixth-year of eligibility, has been only a part-time practice player with the Bobcats since January as he works to take care of his academic responsibilities.

Groce has said that Tyquane could be eligible for postseason tournaments. This quote proves to me that Tyquane wasn't meeting the team's standards.

I hope Tyquane and Kenny were the first people the players and coaches called last night.

buddy, understand your feelings,  but it wasn't Coach Groce who decided to "penalize the whole team," it was TG, who made the decision the second he decided to skip class or whatever.  He was selfish, and not being a good teammate.
