DW3 is so fun to watch, it breaks my heart that this is his final year. The touch around the rim is so refreshing in an era where no one else can seem to hit another but an outside spot up jumper. Looked a little less exhausted tonight than his performance vs Kent, hopefully the stamina is coming around. He only had 29 minutes, imagine if he were able to go 35+.
Happy to see Wiz with 2 nice baskets but let's not get too excited, he was at his usual foul rate with emphasis on off-ball fouls...4 fouls in 10 minutes. He also managed to commit 40% of the team's turnovers in his limited appearance.
Only 5 turnovers all night, I could get used to that. Of course CMU & WMU are bottom tier defenses in the league, but taking that good care of the ball is a good development I hope sticks.
I get the rapid catch and shoot is a valuable skill but we have to recognize when it significantly decreases performance. Some of the threes AJ Clayton shoots are the most mechanically awful shots you'll ever see. Just catch and hoist with no regard for balance and form. This is where if I were coach Boals, I would have an analytics guy do a deep dive to show Clayton's 3 point percentage by 3 categories...rapid release, medium, and plenty of time. I am confident it would show everyone he needs to knock off the flick shots. It would also show when properly spotted up he is a tremendous 3 point shooter. Nothing speaks louder than data.
Another thing that needs to stop - Our bigs on defense awkwardly going to the top of the key to do some sort of disruption then stumbling back. We gave them several easy buckets because DW or Wiz were busy doing on a detour for some sort of double teaming of a guard.
Like a chronically abused wife, I am all-in on Ben Roderick's outside shot being back...he looks good and comfortable. He is at 43.4% on the season. Let's get him more minutes and spot him up like it's March 2021. He also mixes in the occasional drive to the hoop and always shows good hustle.
Crazy that Miles does not get a single bucket to follow the CMU performance. I feel like his shot is either unstoppable or off a lot, but he always plays good defense and helps out in other ways. EJ4 no points also is crazy. Jaylin a very efficient night shooting, smart shot selection only 1 dumb turnover that I remember. He & Roderick's shots to go with DW3 being an animal were the keys.
Akron will be a tough game, good chance for a huge win. I think they will overly key in on DW and we need to have Hunter, Roderick & the Brown Bros spot and and drain their open threes. Simple as that.
