It was mentioned upthread and I'm not sure how long it's been going on, but I first heard about it last week when bobcatfanny started a thread in the OZone forum... there's a small group in the front of the OZone swearing at and bashing Reggie, in particular.

Wow, that's awful.  I'm sorry but the Ozone needs to police itself in this regard.  Unless you are acting like Alex Abreu there is absolutely no reason for a player to have to be subjected to that at home.

100% agree that the a$$hole chant is unnecessary and a little embarrassing. With that being said, the sweeping generalizations about our generation on here are far more offensive, as has already been pointed out. Really? The "dumbest generation on record?" By what measure? We are certainly the most educated so that can't be your measuring stick.

Also, big time programs don't have student sections that scream profanities? Duke is known as being one of the most profane in the country and they are CELEBRATED as the best! Don't even get me started on Maryland. A few years ago when Maryland was playing against Duke the ENTIRE student section (and what sounded like the entire arena on tv) was repeatedly chanting "F*** You J.J!" at J.J. Redick.

Please.

Many of his contemporaries found him quite offensive.  I can't believe you'd choose such a role model.  For sooth!

Fixed.

For what it is worth, we had the same battles 30 years ago when I was the head of the Crazy Cats - a forerunner of the O-Zone.  You are always going to have students directing the f-bomb at a ref or opposing player - which to me is over the line - it becomes personal then.  But it happens when I go to Panther games here as well - and it is not college students.

Thank you.

Wow this thread is stupid. Its a Student section they are going to say some mean things.  The Convo would not be fun at all without the students there.

When I was a member of the Crazy Cats in the early 1980s, there was much that was worse than "a-hole" chants. We had one member (an infrequent poster here) who actually received a handwritten note from referee Sam Lichliter at halftime. Sam wrote, "I sincerely hope you are not an English major."  Classic.

Folks, this is a generational thing.  Even the most boorish O Zone members will grow up and change their ways as they enter the "real world."

remnants of the old board. Dragon took plenty of crap over there for the length of time he was in school. It just struck me as funny.

IIRC correctly Coach Rhodes met with the OZone for some historical perspective and came away enjoying the experience, BD and norris can probably contribute some of that interaction. Not sure how long the current versionof the Ozone has been there but I remember there being an active section in the house when Ray McCallum, Curtis Kidd, Palumbizio  and Bonzi were playing. Were those different?

Still the best inthe MAC (and I have seen them all) but I agree with some of the deterioration in quality and humour over the last season. The challenge I see here is for them to respond by doing things that just mess folks up like the famous p[icture of a readheaded twin on a tricycle and such. WHen you get up close and personal it messes folks up. Singletary did not like the DUI references and Evans did not enjoy the She said no thing. Creativity is virtuous and the more personal it is the better...unless it is grown men from Marshall sitting behind the bench making vulgar remarks thinkg they are creative.

And under the watchful eye of some folks here I have been given an ardent fan's Bobcat Black tickets to sit in  when they cound not make a game for the RMU , BSU and Miami games this year. I found the experience to be OK. Dont really get to see much down there and I realized why the game makes much more sense to me up high....but I did get to get inthe ear of a few refs that I had to keep my mouth shut around the last 4 years. Makes sense why the Ozone likes to be front and center. As an old guy I have never really liked heckling other players as I know how much time those guys have oput in to get there and I have respect up and down the bench for even the walk ons so I just can't bring my self to heckle another player UNLESS they are a prick like the kid from BUGS taking a cheap shot. I brought my 12 year old down there one game. 6th graders looking at college kids and shaking their heads at the things said says something to me that I may be raising him with decent ability to use the vocabulary in more creative ways and knowing what is acceptabnle to repeat and what is not.

All in all I think kids are going to push the envelope. After spending a lifetime in gyms I always appreciate the more subtle and under your skin approach than the vulgar, offensive stuff. IF OUR student body wants to act like they are more similar to Akron than Cameron that is their choice. As the article stated Coach K cusses....but that is far overshadowed by how he conducts himself with character. I would like to think that what I have seen from the Ohio students over the years is pretty good character and hope it remains that way for many more.

Does 441 posts qualify me as a frequent or infrequent poster here? (I don't recall getting a note from a ref, but there are many things I don't recall from those years.)   Also, wasn't it suggested that another Crazy Cat member write a letter of apology to UT coach Nickles (was that his name?) for kicking a UT player (Harvey Knuckles, I believe)?
The Crazy Cats from cc cat and SBH's era had an excuse for boorish behavior in the way of a tapped keg in a room off the Convo concourse for pre- and post-game consumption.

It wasn't you, 'Squared.  it was the poster known as Basecat, who was a resident of Read Hall circa 1980-81.

Why has no one mentioned the beloved 110's involvement in some of these chants????

The "You Suck" chant?  Yeah, everyone does that, and it's been discussed on here thousands of times.

The "Bull****" chant?  The 110 says "PUSH-IT," whilst making a pushing motion, so you couldn't be talking about that one.

"The a**hole" chant?  Like most of the other students, the band turns their heads and looks at the idiots saying it like they're a bunch of morons.

So what are you trying to get at here?

I really don't have a problem with any of it, but they are a "part" of the ozone and some of things people have been complaining about.  The 110 does participate in some of your mentioned chants and also one i think is very funny but borderline...."defense, C@stration, take that ball away"

I guess I'd like to think that the 110 brings a little something more to the game than just chanting, and that's why people don't complain about the 110 being a part of it.

I completely agree, I love 110 and the ozone and see no problem with what they do.  On another side note, you will hear just as much cussing from fans in the other sections as the ozone.

Wow, man! You joined the site just to say that? News flash: For centuries, students didn't act like that. This was for a reason. You're part of an aberration, and it's no coincidence that by several measures you're known as the dumbest and least capable generation in recent memory - or perhaps ever. You should be getting pissed at the people who did this to you.

Wait, whose generation got this country in $15 trillion of debt?

I'm all for having the O Zone avoid profanity, but does anyone have a solution for how to stop it?

There is no viable way for the fans or the athletic department to control what they say. There are far too many students in the O Zone to single out certain individuals. Even if you could, what are you going to do? Kick them out of the Convo? We're attempting to grow our student support, not alienate it. If we start tossing students out of the O Zone for profanity, we're going to really have a problem.

If anyone has a realistic solution, I'd love to hear it. Confronting them at a game, involving the police, or having some sort of "sit down" with athletic department personnel isn't going to do it.

.   The cussing doesn't really bother me much because it's so prevalent in everyday life including  business world.  The higher up the ladder the worse it gets. For the most part I believe the OZONE is one of the cleanest student sections in the nation. If fans were really that bothered by it they would stay away in droves and the opposite appears to be true at OU. Some of the chants you'll hear in many  other arenas that most would agree are much worse
_'s   a  p---sy
_ sucks c_ck
Mom's a whore
Hey  --uck You song  some students substitute Hey You  Suck   and  they  chant  it even when the bands  not playing it.
 .
When I attended a  Duke game this year  the students were chanting Mom's a MILFer ( in some circles this is a complement) and the adult Duke  fans sitting around us cracked up when I asked what Dad's an S. O. meant during the intros...it means sex offender.
BTW  I do believe the f-bomb is always  appropriate when followed by Miami

I can only speak on what I hear, but not one single member of the 110 has been out of line this year.  I am very close to their section and have found them quite entertaining, even when they are not playing music.  They are intimidating, organized, creative, loud, edgy and engaged.  They have strong tradtion as a cheering section and a reputation to uphold.  The other 2/3 of the student section should follow their lead.

History has proven that the only good a-hole chant is one that is directed at Mr. McMahon.

Being 40'ish like Bobcat695 I think we're just young enough where we can still vividly remember 20, but not close enough where we want to go back there.  At the same time,  we're far enough from 60 (though I'm closer to 60 nowthan 20) where we're not quite feeling like we're old farts either.

From this point of view (and I'm sure I'm acting 60 by saying this) cursing is not vogue. Doesn't show maturity, class, intelligence or creativity.   I couldn't yell a profanity at age 20, I can't at age 40-something and I won't at 60.   Just seems like what you do when you can't think of anything else, or you're trying too hard to fit in and be cool, when in fact I don't think it's cool (or is it to 20 year olds?)

I think OHIO is better without cursing and dirty talk.

I'd be supportive of using profanity if it was done with any sort of creativity but just calling someone an a-hole flat out is just uninspired and lame.

re: the 110- agree that the band has been A+ across the board. As lucky as we are to have good coaches like Groce and Solich we're equally lucky  to have hired Dr Suk to lead the 110.

This is really sad.  If your handle indicates a 72 year of graduation, I'd hate to go through the rest of my life thinking I can't do anything about a problem.  How do you know none of the things suggested won't work until they are tried.  If an offender gets mad and doesn't come back then so be it.  That's not the kind of fan we want in the Convo.  This is all a moot point for this year in that there are no more home games, I hope.  The discussions  will center around what to do next year.
