The athletic department will listen to bobcat695.  I suspect next year there will much influencing of ozone language.

I don't mind the occaisional "bullshit" cheer.  But, what we hear now is just not funny, is lacking in intelligence, and is just plain dumb.

I'm not old, socially conservative or naive about what students do.  I'm disappointed that the best student section in the nation does not understand there is problem.  Watch a Duke game.  See if they act like that on national TV.  This thread was started by folks sitting on the other side of the court, not me.  If they can hear it, and the TV broadcast is picking it up, it is too much.

I am not going to the athletic department and demading the O Zone's behavior is improved in order to get my season ticket renewal.  I'm not reducing my donations to the university or the Ohio Bobcat Club.  As a matter of fact, I am taking an entire day out of my business today to be a guest panelist to a class in the College of Business.  The irony is that I was asked to come to campus and speak to Seniors about what businesses expect out of recent college graduates.

The attitude of the O Zone, and the younger grads on here, is that the rest of the fanbase should just deal with it.  I live in West Virginia and the majority of my circle of friends are WVU grads. This is the same attitude that WVU's students have while rioting and burning couches.  If nobody gets hurt, then anyone aged 18-22 should be able to do, and say whatever they want and get a free pass.  That is not a good way to represent your university.

What happened to staying home and watching the Oscars???

Joking aside, I agree that the a$$hole chant is too much. And anyone who is swearing at our own players on our own court or hasseling them doesn't belong in the OZone, or really, in the Convo at all.

Never said I was staying home but my wife, daughter and two grand kids did.  A friend in Toledo mentioned all of the empty seats on tv.

But, the point of this thread is the profanity.  When I said I would grab a few folks and head over there, I was serious but I would have done it in this fashion.  I'm a big chain of command guy, so my first conversation would have been with an usher.  From there it would have been OUPD then Jim Schaus.  I agree with 695, there's no need to threaten contributions or tickets but if enough like minded people express the feeling that the profanity has gotten out of hand, Schaus will make sure it stops.  Believe me when I say it is a huge source of embarrassment for him and for McDavis.

Probably the quickest way to put an end to it would be for John Groce to simply address it with them.  I'm not talking about taking the mic in the middle of the game although that would be quite effective and would get a tremendous cheer from the crowd.

The home season is over so hopefully between now and next year the few knuckleheads move on or the department addresses it.

And finally, whether you want to admit it or not, employers aren't real quick to hire this type of person.  I've passed on at least four of five of them in the last few years in my hiring decisions.

If it's only 1% then the 99% should be able to straighten them out. Just boot them from the Ozone for being low lives.

The "a$$hole" chant after the "you suck" chant isn't new? I'm pretty sure I'm responding to something new and that you never tried to get anyone to stop it because it never happened before.

Look, if the Athletics Department, the university administration and the younger generations prefer, I could start attending Bobcat basketball games on the road at Kent, at Miami and at Marshall and just road trip it to get my fix. Say goodbye to me shelling out $15 apiece for tickets for the family and frequenting the concession stands a few times a year at The Convo. Or, instead, I could follow local high school basketball (sure to be more kid friendly, and less likely to play trashy gangsta music to boot) or start going to Marietta College games.

But thanks for chiming in and proclaiming how useless you think this thread is. I knew I could count on you.

Wow, man! You joined the site just to say that? News flash: For centuries, students didn't act like that. This was for a reason. You're part of an aberration, and it's no coincidence that by several measures you're known as the dumbest and least capable generation in recent memory - or perhaps ever. You should be getting pissed at the people who did this to you.

Right, because the student section at The Convo has been screaming "a$$hole" for decades, and nobody ever had a problem with it. Clearly, America is getting more socially conservative. Your logic is impeccable. Straight outta Steubenville.

Was this said tongue-in-cheek?

I agree that the arse**** chant is something we could do without but my parents felt the same way about the "you suck" chant.  In 20 years the people in the Ozone now will be talking about how they are offended by something the current crop of students do.  Students have always and will always push the envelope.  Would it be great if we could change that, sure. Is it going to happen. No.

Count me as one who is disappointed by the lack of creativity that results in shouting A%$HOLE at the top of your lungs.  Sure, you're entitled to do it- just like you're entitled to walk into a job interview with your shirt unbuttoned and tails out.  The reason you shouldn't do it?  Because you would like to be taken seriously in life.

While we're on this general topic, however, I mostly want say that my greatest disappointment Sunday was hearing the entire O-Zone chanting "Your School Sucks" in the direction of the Zips students.  Really?  That's what you get from an athletic rivalry?  Again, creativity tops crudeness and cruelty every time.  This stuff is not worthy of the Ozone's legacy.

You're awfully high and mighty, and often try to look like quite a know-it-all considering how often you're just flat wrong.  At least four years.  And that's been discussed here before.  And yes, he did bring it up to the people doing it then.  On more than one occasion.

Ooooh, that trashy gangster music.  Seriously.  I don't care for much hip hop, just musically not my thing, but I always find this kind of thing amusing.  Oh, look at that rebel Elvis and how he shakes his hips!  This happens every generation, it is what it is.  Not sure you'll find much different at Marshall or Kent.  You might like Miami, there won't be anybody there to bother your nice quiet basketball experience.

Yes indeedy, I'm sure we're all stupider as an entire generation than in 1960 when more than a quarter of high school students dropped out.

Honestly, people yelling at our own players ought to be dealt with and the rest left alone.  Nobody is threatening anyone, etc.  I find your sweeping post about my generation here more offensive than any word that has been thrown out during a game.  I'm not saying I would be sad if it stopped, but honestly, this is a prototypical generation-gap type of thing, and such things have been going on forever.

So let me see if I understood this all correctly:

A.  I should now show up to the O Zone in business professional attire.
B.  Speak as though I'm interviewing for a job.
C.  Be prepared to brawl with some alums who I've quite possibly met.
D.  Make sure my creativity rivals that of Shakespeare when insulting opposing teams and fans.

For the record, I don't stand down in the area bobcat695 referenced, and I would strongly agree that there are certain characters who are quite annoying to most students, not just alumni.  However, I do stand a couple rows back and along with some friends I yell some things I wouldn't want children hearing.

That is precisely what I warned about with these new Bobcat Black seats... You hear things down there you don't hear sitting across the court.  Guess what?  The players hear it too...  That is what makes the O Zone the O Zone...  The one liners some people yell get into players heads...  If you have the marketing interns trying to corral the O Zone, the O Zone is either going to laugh it off and get even rowdier or simply leave the game and watch it online (or not at all).  GET OFF MY LAWN syndrome from both sides.....

(For clarifications sake, the A-Hole chant has been around for a couple years...  The difference this year is that you have 1/2 the student section yelling it instead of 1 kid.)

Sniping aside, I'd like to say something honestly.

Complaining about the O Zone has been happening for years. Complaints about profanity and uncreativity have happened as long as the board existed. Every year, we hear how the O Zone isn't creative anymore, how they resort to saying profane and stupid things, how it's declining in quality. But it seems like there's a collective amnesia going on because, again, these things are said every year. Three years ago, people were saying the same things as they were now. The only difference now is that three years ago was the Good Old Days. (I will admit that this year really is bad. Everyone seems to agree on this.)

I've been around for the majority of the O Zone's existence. I would like to know when the golden era of only creative, unprofane chants was because I don't recall witnessing it. There have always been childish things going on in the O Zone. There have always been inappropriate chants. There have always been uncreative things. But there have always been creative things, too, and they stick out more than anything else in our selective memories.

Some of my friends here can back me on this: A lot of the worst stuff you guys never heard because we were able to cut it off. Do we approve of the %#^hole chant? No, and most of us didn't participate. But we also knew we had to pick our battles and exercise our leadership judiciously. We know a losing battle when we see one. That's what I said in the first post of this thread: You're fighting a losing battle. That's not saying you should be OK with it, it's saying you need to recognize it's not going away anytime soon and there isn't much you can do about it. Does it suck? Yeah, it does.

Also, 695 outlined things that are far worse in my mind and his post isn't getting enough attention.

I think many of us (myself included) didn't know the a$$hole chant had been around for years ... this year is the first year we've been able to hear it clear over in the oldzone.

And I don't have nearly as much of a problem with that as I do with people swearing at and bashing our players. They should not have to listen to anything like that on their own court.

For what it is worth, we had the same battles 30 years ago when I was the head of the Crazy Cats - a forerunner of the O-Zone.  You are always going to have students directing the f-bomb at a ref or opposing player - which to me is over the line - it becomes personal then.  But it happens when I go to Panther games here as well - and it is not college students.

That said, the vast majority do not, will not, and will even tell the guilty party to cool it, but good luck with that.  I will also venture that most on this board at some time in their college career did in fact yell f@ck Miami" at the end of the little ditty after "stand up and cheer" - come on....you know you did - Hell, I did it at my wedding - along with the Ohio table.

Based on my experience, the only person that can cap things like this is the coach.  We would have sat in silence had Nee told us.  Of course Nee wanted us as rowdy as possible - which caused issues inside the athletic department.  Much of this comes with student sections.  And yes, Duke can be as bad, as is UNC - in fact UNC has moved the students around in an attempt to control it.

Agreed. We should all be really more concerned with the guys screaming profanity like they did at Keely. I don't recall actually seeing anyone yell stuff at Reggie, but that's just insane that students would turn on their own team, regardless of whether Keely was having a good or bad year. I certainly wouldn't endorse that...
