We're already the most-disliked fanbase in the conference...

You spelled Akron wrong.

really? Painful but true. THey are consistently getting better milage out of their athletes and getting to the title game consistently as well as winning games on the road and at home. I don't like Dambrot but he gets those kids playing together and is now bringing in great talent with Zeke, Walsh, Diggs and some up and coming studs thanks to the on campus toruneys and suppor t by King James. Groce needs to figure out the way to win those recruiting wars and become the Butler, GOnzaga etc of the MAC. We have many things going for us....just got to get the full program elevated.

They may be near the top but I find it hard to annoint a team that has never won a regular season title the "class" of the MAC.

Akron won the MAC East regular season championship in 2006.

They have won 31 MAC regular season games in the previous 3 seasons.  Kent has won 35. (25 for OU)

This year Akron is 7-1, Kent 5-3.

I'd say the trend is definitely toward Akron being classified as the top program in the MAC.

We'd better ask Kent to give back the banner then (or Toledo if you meant 06-07).  And winning a division doesn't make you the champion. Ask our football team.

They may end up there but they have zero claim to it right now.   Make no mistake they are just behind Kent but Kent is and has been the class of the league for 10+ years.

Ceiling means diddly, especially when we come nowhere near it. How long can you be satisfied with "We have a higher ceiling?"  Pretty tough argument to make when programs with crappy facilities consistently outperform you.

We were 40 minutes from a trip to the Sweet 16 a little less then 24 months ago...

I'm not trying to shred your response...just would like to see/hear your evidence that we're on the verge of passing programs like Kent and Akron, both of which have some very nice recruits heading to campus next year.

Some things sort of stick in your mind, and as this post season rolls on, I couldn't help but think of this thread from a while back. As we are one of the 16 remaining teams in the country playing for a national championship.

I really don't like Akron, but they are  the best basketball program in the MAC right now.  Six straight MAC championship games and 2 trips to the NCAA in the last 4 years is an amazing run.

We are hot right now for sure and take over.  But Akron is better than everyone else for sure.

What?  How are two trips in four years to the NCAA tournament with ZERO wins better than two trips in three years with THREE wins (and counting)?  Not to sound rude, but that comment is pretty ignorant.  It's not as though they have necessarily been the class of the MAC regular season, this I believe was their first year with the #1 seed, of which they procured on the last day of the season.

Still waiting for Borna to answer the question I posed earlier today: Why do you say we're on the verge of "taking the next step" as a program? What evidence do you have from a talent and/or performance standpoint?

Again, no they are not. They are near the top but they have not surpassed Kent.  Making it to championship games does not make a program dominant.   Kent has won more games than Akron over the last 10 years. They have won more games than Akron over the last 5 years. They've won more games than Akron over the last two years.  Akron's claim to fame is making it to Championship games.  Kent and now ours is doing something with them.  Akron's two NCAA trips were culminated by two weak showings against beatable opponents.  Our worst showing of the last ten years we nearly took out Florida.

Since 2002, Kent and Ohio have both played in 6 NCAA games while Akron has only played in 2. Kent and Ohio have made the NCAAs 3 times to only twice by Akron. Akron has done enough with 2 NCAA's in four years and a lot of winning overall to be included in the top group. The second half of the MAC East (Miami, Buffalo, Bowling Green) is mid level and the entire MAC West plays a lower level of ball. That is the way its been the last 7 or 8 seasons quite a long time.

good analysis Wes.

Difference is that Kent just took a big dump and hired Senderhoff. WHile I believe most of the MAC is making pretty good hires ( and yes I still think Billy Taylor is a great hire on the heels of Ronnie Thompson) Kent goes and squats down......lEaving their program heading opposite where the rest of the MAC east sans BG is going.

Of course he's not going to respond. I'm sure SBH is busy organizing ads in major area newspapers congratulating the Bobcats on their run in this year's NCAA Tournament. It's probably taking a lot of effort to come up with a suitable rhyme.

I just can't go back more than 5-6 years in this discussion.  We hadn't even invaded Iraq 10 years ago....  Someone like Thomas Stephens or something was our point guard.  Too far back for me.
