Many outlets reporting Fresno has found their man.

Will be united with fellow Bobcat Tom Boeh.

Bittersweet. He would have been a great Bobcat Head Coach for many years to come, but you have to strike while the iron's hot.

Good luck to him.

Best of luck to Mr. Boals.

This is an interesting hire, taking someone who's pretty much worked his entire career in a region ranging from Akron to Huntington and putting him on the left coast. On the other hand, recruiting is a lot more national than in years past. I hope it works out for him.

This is not a grewat move on paper.  Working for Boeh ,questionable.  Working on the west coast, questionable.  I wish JB the best, but concerned.

I am with you Panda.

After watching great coaching changes .....not good .....not average ....great coaching moves the last 3 years. I am positively scratching my head over this one.

I believe the next big coachng carousel is after the 2013 season.  Anthony Grant to Bama , Groce to OU, Tayloe to Balls, Crean to IU, Cal to UK, Stanford, Zona, cal, Clemson,Wright  are all moves that fit the best fit model and had Shake had the Tenn job still availabe I wuld have said another great move but I am befuddled by some of this years moves including this one. Geno, Gregory, Boals, the Mizzou hire.....I'd say Shaka made a great move and will  move in2 years when some big jobs come up....sometimes patience reallypays off.

Well, working for Boeh may make him long for his days back at dear olde Ohio.  Boeh made Grobe so angry that he left several years before he was intending to look for another job.  TB is probably the only man who could make a coach so upset he'd quit in a huff and take a job for less pay just to get out of Dodge.  Well, at least a man can dream, can't he?

If Boals does go it looks like former Cat Kevin Kuwik gets promoted:

I had just assumed that when one of my  Butler friends asked me about that and brandon Millleer yesterday. Perhaps I spoke out of order but I really did think that would be a done deal irregardless. kevin May surpass brandonand the other assts oncccce he gets to let loose his personality, skills and intellect on the players.

Impressive, especially when you consider the asst is the one who is at the forefront of the recruitment of the players. Look for Fresno to elevate its level of kids being looked at. Lokks though like his roots and recruiting background is mostly Texas....which, between Dallas and Houston has a ton of AAU and good summer ball teams.

It would take a lot of guts because you'd be ignoring a $300K salary offer, but, if I was someone like Jeff Boals I would think long and hard before taking a job at Ohio University or any MAC school.

If places like Bradley are shelling out $600K guaranteed for 4-5 years I'd really have to consider holding out.

Somebody please tell my why this message board thinks Jeff Boals in the annointed one? I know he's a good guy, and he's had a few asst coaching stints. So what?

It's not a secret Schaus has Boals at the top of his list to replace Groce.

Because his credentials are that of pretty much every other candidate we would have, with the obvious tiebreaker being he is one of OUr own.  You'd be crazy to not support hiring him next summer should there be an opening.

I'd be totally cool with a MAC regular season Championship, some postseason success, Groce bring hired away, and Boals coming in.  Not trying to get rid of Groce, just the nature of being a mid major program.

I agree.  He has roughly the same credentials that Groce had before he was hired.  Shouldn't we want to have success under Groce and then have him stay?

I just looked and it appears that Fresno State only pays $50,000 per year more than Ohio, so the salary thing is not relevant.

He was an extremely smart player on the court so you'd have to think that would translate well to coaching.   But to your original point, why is any assistant ever annointed?

Van--I too would think that smarts in a player would bode well for that player being a good coach.  But force of personality, ability to recruit, communicate, motivate and teach are so much a part of it.  You'd think a smart player would be smart about these skills also, but it's so difficult to tell on the front end (before someone is hired).  Of course, court-smarts would be big on my list of traits, too.

I am not in any way saying that Boals lacks these skills.  He was a fine player for us, really understood what he needed to do for us to win--and did it.

It's interesting (well, maybe) how superstar players often don't make good coaches.  Those who have overwhelming physical talent must be frustrated when they just can't teach that to their players.

I don't think anyone has to think J.B. is the chosen one..  Although I was young when he signed to play ball for us Cats.. Don't hold me on this .. I was in middle school and one of the ball boys.  Someone correct me if Im wrong please.. He had big time offers until  he blew out his knee..  Larry gave him a chance..  Goes back to the non- dunker..    He was always a hustler and very dicipline .   He will be good sometime hopefully sooner that later .. Cali is a long way from contacts..

Jeff Boals had a signed LOI to Stanford until he blew his knee out in the Ohio North-South game. Larry Hunter and Ohio University is the only school who stood by Jeff. Guy has earned all that he has received!
