...can anyone think of a coach who left a mid-major conference for a bigger one, failed there, and came back to the mid-majors successfully?

Rick Majerus?

Bobby Cremins? (No NCAA's but a lot of wins at Charleston)

Ray McCallum?

Steve Alford?

To me, St. Louis U. and UNM are major programs, maybe not exactly in-line with the big boys but a step up from the MAC (in terms of resources, fan support, arena size etc).

A mid-major is more like Detroit, COC and Creighton. Both McCallum and McDermott have really benefited from having sons who are big time players.

How about coaches that left a successful midmajor program for a struggling bigger conference team, failed and then returned to a midmajor and failed again?

Louis Orr

This is worst-case scenario of the Christian hiring, in my opinion. If what Ohio hires turns out to be a Louis Orr -- a guy who wins just enough that you can't fire him but not enough to make the program exciting.

I want 25 wins a season or a complete flameout by Christian. If he wins 18-20 wins per season, you're stuck in no-man's land.

Hopefully the $600k salary forces Schaus to demand more than just "pretty good" out of Christian.

AND JUST WHO would you bring in that guarantees more than pretty good?

Frank Solich?  Ok...was major to mid only...not mid-major-mid...but was a step down from previous coaching position.

The difference is a poor year at Ohio is 16-14  8-8 in  the MAC.  An average year at Ohio is 18-12 9-7 in MAC and a good year at Ohio is 20-10 11-5 or better. A great year at Ohio is a good regular season with a MAC tournament title and trip to NCAA tournament with the expectation of playing well in the tournament. At a minimum a top four seed in MAC tournament is expected. No excuse to finish 5-9 every year and miss out on bye's. Groce was 9-2 in the MAC tournament and 3-2 in the NCAA tournament. 12-4 regular when it counted the most.
