...can anyone think of a coach who left a mid-major conference for a bigger one, failed there, and came back to the mid-majors successfully?

Might be a little early, but Greg McDermott comes to mind.

Rick Majerus?

Bobby Cremins? (No NCAA's but a lot of wins at Charleston)

Ray McCallum?

Steve Alford?

Steve Fisher did this in a roundabout, bizarre way.

Except he was never a head coach at Western Michigan. And he was ousted because of a renegade program at Michigan.

Dana Altman only spent 1 year at Marshall before heading to K.State.  And while I wouldn't call him a complete failure in Manhattan 68-54 & 19-37.  He returned to much more sucess at Creighton 327-126, 178-107.

Yes. And he hasn't left. Altman and Alford are the blueprints, IMO.

Fisher never left a mid-major HC. His first head coaching job was Michigan.

Perhaps you meant Alford, but Altman did leave.  He went to Oregon, then beat his former team (and McDermott) in the CBI finals.

I know they got the boot, but I consider Majerus, Cremins and Hewitt successes at their major program jobs.

How about coaches that left a successful midmajor program for a struggling bigger conference team, failed and then returned to a midmajor and failed again?

Louis Orr

This is worst-case scenario of the Christian hiring, in my opinion. If what Ohio hires turns out to be a Louis Orr -- a guy who wins just enough that you can't fire him but not enough to make the program exciting.

I want 25 wins a season or a complete flameout by Christian. If he wins 18-20 wins per season, you're stuck in no-man's land.

Hopefully the $600k salary forces Schaus to demand more than just "pretty good" out of Christian.

If you call being the winningest coach ever at a school and being inducted into their Hall of Fame failure, yep, I see that.

Ha, whoops, he did do well at Nebraska.  My fault.  Although local lore was he ran his combine at all hours of the night.

Amaker may fit this description if you consider Seton Hall - Michigan - Harvard. The problem being Seton Hall's conference affiliation.
