Matta headcoach at Butler 1 year, 3 years at X, 7 at OSU. Look at all the asst. that have went on to better jobs. I do believe it was the success in recruiting and the style of play of Matta that has made the Asst. be wanted. Which is also tied to the success of OSU. Groce left , as have others, haven't heard any comments about the Groce tree, just that he came thru Matta. So per se, it has a lot to do with him at OSU and his success there.
Alllright y then ......
COaching tree is as follows
Coaches who worked for Matta at Butler have been hired for head coaching positions at
University of Iowa and
Butler University.
Sean Miller worked for Matta for three years at Xavier and was hired as head coach when Matta left, then took the head coaching job at University of Arizona. The success of Matta's staff at Ohio State was acknowledged by
Ohio University in 2008, when former Buckeyes Associate Head Coach
John Groce was chosen to lead that program, and who has since been tapped to lead the
University of Illinois Fighting Illini. In 2010, former Buckeyes assistant coach
Alan Major, who had also worked with Matta at Xavier, was named the head coach at
Charlotte. In 2011, Sean's brother
Archie Miller, another former Ohio State assistant, got the job at the
University of Dayton.
Archie did come from Ohio State but has rather less ties to Ohio State and a more nomadic situation.
Ryan "Archie" Miller, (born October 30, 1978 in
Beaver Falls), is the head men's basketball coach of the University of Dayton Flyers. He was hired to his first head coaching job on April 3, 2011 after having spent two years as an assistant to his brother,
Sean Miller, at
Arizona.
[1] Arizona hired
Joe Pasternack to replace him. Prior to his time in Arizona he was an assistant to Thad Matta at Ohio State, and to Herb Sendek at Arizona State and North Carolina State. He was also a standout point guard at NC State from 1999-2002.
I am not seeing where the Ohio State job plays the biggest role as of this writing in his coaching tree.
