Does anyone know if Groce stayed the night in Champaign?  Or did he come back to Athens to contemplate the offer?

This is taking Groce Watch(tm) to new levels of geekiness, but the Dassault Falcon that flew him out is considerably smaller than the Learjet 45 that's flying today. Suggests that the family might be tagging along for the big conference.

What does the choice of plane tell us:

They didn't stick him on U of I's 40 year-old, single engine Beechcraft or Cessna, so we can be fairly sure that he didn't blow them off. Other than that, they're either flying him back to Athens in a plane big enough to carry his family back to Champaign (as Recovering Journalist suggested) or he hasn't given them an answer and they're still wooing him, by sending him in the Learjet.

Or to haul back bags of money to deposit at the OU Credit Union.

I'd like to think that he has the bigger plane just to bring back some Chicago pizzas for the coaching staff and the players to celebrate him staying in Athens for a run at the Final Four next year.

It looks like the plane from Athens is scheduled to arrive back at U of I at 3:50 EDT, just in time for a news conference.

Plane has a 10 minute stop in Athens?  That must just be a family pick up.  Not enough time to do a team meeting.

That's weak. I thought Groce would show the players a little more respect than that.

Edit: maybe I spoke too soon, given the post Ryan just put up. Very interesting.

I want Groce ti be the next Mark Few, who is willing to work in a smaller town with less exposure because he loves the school and the university. That said, Gonzaga pays Few 1.1 million. I think that could be done here. I really do. But is he willing to pass up those 2 million/year offers at that point? I dunno.

Sounds like John Groce wants to meet the team and tell them himself.

So I should step off the bridge for a few minutes?

Edit, safely back away from the bridge to safety! LOL

Is it teasing to point out coaches have taken jobs only to change their minds soon after (Dana Altman, Gregg Marshall, Billy Donovan)?

Perhaps he was flying in over Athens and had some second thoughts?  Not like they couldn't have pushed the pressed conference back a few hours to give him some time.  This is ridiculous.  I just want to know if he's staying or leaving so we can move on one way or another.

Didn't Dakich do that too?  Took the job with WVU and then went back to BG a few days later?
