Unlike most on this board, I got no love for a coach who comes here and bails for the money.

Have you ever turned down a pay raise and/or declined a flattering offer to flourish in the career you love?

We aren't just talking a 3% pay raise either.  This is a 500% to 1000% pay raise.  I would not turn that down unless it required me to work for satan and even then there would be some soul searching...

This is my first experience with a coaching search.  I was a freshman in 2000, so Hunter was on his way out and I wasn't to a point yet where I really paid attention and/or cared.

That said, it stinks.  I don't like it.  But I can hardly blame him.  I'm in the camp that thinks Illinois is a step below elite.  They have an extremely large and passionate fan base.  Hell, their coaching search thread is over 450 pages.  We are up to almost 5.

I'll wish John the best of luck, because he has made me a huge fan.  I just hope he's up for going toe to toe week in and out with Izzo, Matta, Crean, Painter, and the like.  The B1G in my opinion is the cream of the crop for top flight coaching right now.

Nothing against Diamond Cat, cause I feel the pain, but comparing it X is kind of funny. How many coaches have they lost all the way back to Bob Staak? It's been nothing short of a revolving door, but you gotta keep the door moving no matter who you hire. Staak was okay. But then you add Gillen, Prosser, Matta, Miller, Mack in a row and its amazing. Maybe TOS was our Staak, Groce is our Gillen and now we gotta find the Prosser.

And let's not discount the fact that A) They don't have a football program, B) They are in a better league than us presently and could potentially move to a better one if an all-basketball conference came around like I'm hypothesizing eventually for the X's, Marquette's, G-Town's, etc., C) Their enrollment and tuition scale is completely different than ours. It's comparing apples to oranges.

I agree on the differences, but those are current not past. Don't look at what X has now but what they did when Staak was there...pratically zero history, a league with stalwarts like Oral Roberts, Oklahoma City, Evansville...It's not where we are at now, it's what we can grow into.

That's a good point Mike. I've never thought about it in that way before, but maybe Groce was the one to lay the ground work for this program and it's someone (or more than one other someone) else's job to keep it rolling and make it grow.

It's going to HAVE to be that way.

I'm still holding out hope that Groce stays, but my mind tells me it's a done deal.

Either way, Groce is gone this off-season or next off-season. Even if he comes back to coach these kids next year, I'd expect another good season and possible tourney run, in which case he'll definitely be gone then.

So, whether it's now or 1 year from now, what you say is true. Somebody else is going to HAVE to take the foundation Groce laid and keep rolling with it.  The life of a mid-major...and why our President and AD are so so SO important in order to keep finding those good up and coming replacements the same way Xavier and Butler have done recently.

If you're wrong, you're stuck with the guy.
If you're right, you have to be able to find the NEXT guy all over again.

Very true, life of a mid-major until we invest even more money into the program. Unfortunately our financials won't allow us to do that right now. I knew Groce would leave eventually, but I felt he had at least one or two more years left.

Days like this are inevitable. I find it impossible to blame a guy who can set up his family financially for life -- no matter what his result are at Illinois. We can talk about loyalty all day long, but nothing is as certain as a fresh contract with guaranteed money from a school with deep pockets. We all would take that kind of raise, and I wish Groce well. The only anger and frustration I have is toward the whole morass of college athletics, which is seeing more and more money that's tilting the playing field more every year. Each B1G school got $22.6 million last year just from the Big Ten Network. That's about the size of Ohio's entire (heavily subsidized) athletic budget. We're not a small school, but money means we'll always be an underdog in any fight against a power conference. It's frustrating as a fan, but it will never dampen my support of the university.

What's really sad about this, is this money is just tacked on to everyone's cable or satellite bill whether they watch BTN or not. So in fact, I am paying Illinois to hire away Coach Groce. So is my grandma.

It's been widely reported that an offer has been made. The delay in additional news tells us a couple of things that may be happening:

1. The offer is being negotiated

2. Ohio has counter-offered

3. Groce is taking his time in considering this (partially  the financial incentives, partially leaving Athens)

4. The deal is signed and they are waiting to announce it (unlikely given the leaks that tend to happen)

or another, more interesting and unlikely possibility:

5. Key U of I alumni who have heard about the offer and don't like it, may be creating some noise about it and trying to hold up the process on Illinois' end

This is all speculation. Not trying to create rumors, just trying to make sense of all of this.

I meant in Illinois. For either late this afternoon or tomorrow am. Just a rumor right now.

I really hope Groce meets with our team and lets them know in person before he does any press conference.

Hopefully, although being the good and decent man he seems to be, he is probably waiting to talk to the team before he signes anything.

I would expect that the players will blow up Twitter before anything official is ever announced.

Does anyone know if Groce stayed the night in Champaign?  Or did he come back to Athens to contemplate the offer?

I wondered that too. I looked to see if there were any other flights between the Illinois airport and ours or Port Columbus. Nothing either to ours or CMH yesterday (the one taking him left from CMH, but that's it). Presumably that means he stayed the night last night.

So, hopefully this is the appropriate youtube video:

and not this one (language warning):

Dakich on now talking about Groce and Illinois.

Says prez is problematic, AD only spoke to Weber once in entire relationship ....to fire him. Hve to compete inthe Bigtetwelve with really good coaches and no administration support.

Groce is a great hire but 34=30 in the MAC ...got in toruney and won 2 games but he would do a terrific job.

Drawback is people are lambasting him fro 34-30 record.

Hopes they do hire him because he is a really good coach.

Illinois flew Groce out to Champaign yesterday. Good chance that plane is him flying back.
