To all you Ohio fans, I can certainly understand the frustration. Groce seems like a fantastic hire. He may have not been our top choice, but can anyone really blame us for going after Stevens and Smart? I really hope Illinois gets this deal done. I commend all you Bobcats for wanting to keep the guy around.
So are you talking about your frustration about Bill Self leaving or about having to fire your National Championship winning coach? You should instead commend Groce for still giving you guys a chance even with all the people in your camp that seems to be against him.
Oh wait, you guys can spend enough money to make it all worth it.
Still think you understand our frustration?
Yes, actually of all of the BCS schools, I would say Illinois is one of the more empathetic when it comes to having a fantastic coach leave - Bill Self. Clearly we have the resources rebuild, but successful mid-majors, like Ohio, have their own unique situation they can benefit from. *If* you guys were to get a new head coach, he can at least tell recruits that Ohio is building a successful program that has a great chance of playing in the NCAAs every year. You're not quite there yet, but you've built a pretty successful brand. Memphis and Gonzaga are the epitome of this example. All Pastner and Few have to do are tell kids "don't got to the BCS program, come here, make a name for yourself, and you have a really good chance of dancing at the end of the year." Ohio has talent in place. This was the big thing Bruce Weber failed on when he first came to Illinois - he never leveraged his current program to entice young talent.
Also, please don't generalize "us" with the Chicago media and message board loud-mouths. According to a poll this morning, 57% of our fans approved of the hire of Groce. The only reason that number is even that low is because people haven't done their homework, or they're still upset about Shaka/Stevens.
Oh, and we didn't fire a "National Championship winning" coach.
