You guys seem to have a pretty active fan base, i'm impressed.  Not really surprised though, hoops is obviously a big part of Ohio.

You guys are on Pg# 516, says something about your program and university, just not the people making decisions for it.

Dude...I'll put our fan-base up against anyone in the country. We might not have the numbers, but we have triple the passion. Hopefully, you watched the UNC game and heard us in Section 153.

We are OHIO.

Well thanks.

This year has done a lot of good for the Bobcats, you guys are showing you're not content to be the little brother of OSU, If it was not for a heartbreaking loss in OT to North Carolina people might even question who was better this year. All that aside though, i've always liked MAC sports, In football i confess to being an NIU fan...since, well, they're better than the U of I anyway. You narrowly lost to NIU who was a hell of a lot better than Illinois, so you even had us beat in football this year.  You guys really deserve a lot more credit. Your team mostly returns next year, you guys should be set for another run, so good luck, and i'll stop spamming your boards, haha.

Cheers.

Illinois probably has a top 5 alumni base in terms of pure numbers.  A very large group of people they are.  I actually surprised they're not more influential than they already appear to be.  The alums/boosters run Ohio State.  I would think Illinois would be similar.

You aren't spamming the board. We like it when fans from other schools jump in. Keep posting any info you get here. Thanks

Yes, and that would have something do with Illinois, population wise, being the 5th largest state.

I think one of our main problems...is lack of pride.  So many people around here claim to be OSU fans or Kentucky fans, when they know nothing of those schools and only 'like' them on account of they are popular.

There used to be pride, back in 04-05, but that has since passed due to recent failures.

In that way I think I can relate to Ohio fans, always having to listen to Ohio State fans, or other schools hogging the glory when it's obvious your school deserves some too. Even worse for you, since there were so many Ohio teams in the tournament! Hard to get noticed in such a crowd as that, but this year put you above most of the other Ohio schools.

Also similarly, we lost our best coach, Bill Self to Kansas as you lot probably know, it's just a massive food chain, we get someone good and woosh, they're off to 'better' places. I'm sure that's how you feel now, but hopefully all of us get what we want out of this.

Good insight by IllinoisFan. You seem to have a good perspective on your program and fan base. Now I could turn out to be completely wrong, but I think Groce would get your program going in the right direction. He would energize your fan base, despite the feelings they have about him now. Looks like the fact that he's the "sixth choice" seems to have soured people on him for the wrong reasons. Obviously, I hope he stays and you don't get a chance to find out.

Thanks.

And well, you know it's one of those things you can't be 100% sure about.

He could come in with the mentality ' Man i'm going to prove everyone wrong, i'll show them', or it could just be about the money, not someone who bleeds orange and blue and has what it takes to make the U of I great.

I think Ohio is a good place for him, Ohio is a hotbed for recruits, he has gotten some good ones and will continue to there, i think Ohio is the best place for him, at least for now anyway.

But if Illinois has offered him, It's all on him, and we will just have to see what happens.

I would be all for Groce moving on if it was 2013, but to have a 29 win, sweet 16 team that is bought into your system 1000% percent and returns everybody next year.. there should be no amount of money that could make him walk away from that. Add in the obvious cluster bomb that is the leadership at Uof I and returning for another year should be a no brainer.

given all these factors and all of his talk about building something special, and caring about the people of Athens, and all that other stuff, etc. if he walks away from all that  just to get paid then I 'll lose any respect I ever had for the man.

That's beyond ridiculous. You can't fault him at all for entertaining his options.

I agree.

He has another good year coming up for him next year at Ohio.

Illinois has the talent, assuming Meyers Leonard does not go pro to compete for the Big Ten, but that would take a lot of coaching to get those kids to play with heart, which they have not so far done, except when they beat Ohio State and Michigan State, those games they played with heart.

He is better off at Ohio next year, and at Illinois he would not be allowed to fail, he' d be on the hot seat the whole year, not the same at Ohio, he's got the respect there.

Kendall Gill? Kendall Gill !?!

I was catching up on this thread and literally kept saying Kendall Gill? over and over again, each time expressing a little more dismay.

I'm trying to understand the rationale of these Illinois fans / supporters but I'm having some trouble.

This whole "Grocewatch" thing is turning out to the most ridiculous thing since "Pandawatch" in 'Anchorman'.

I don't really expect for you to understand exactly where some of us are coming from.

You see, here at Illinois, there is a lack of pride. We do not really want a coach who does not have loyalty to Illinois, we want someone who bleeds orange and blue. Kendall Gill is that guy. He's played and prospered at Illinois, and will be able to relay that success story to recruits. Not the best option, that ship sailed with Shaka and Stevens, but it's the best chance we have right now. A sad situation, isn't it? That's my opinion anyway, there are others who think Groce might be okay, and you can read about what they think on the Illinois forums, but I don't agree with any of those posters, but I obviously am only representing my opinion.

Illinois is a dumpster fire of a program and college athletics right now.  Look at what happened when hiring a football coach and now with Groce.  I wish him all the luck in the world if he gets this job because he is going to need it.  It is going to be hard if he can't get the players from Chicago.  Been talking with friends and family from UoI today and the biggest issue they have is not getting players from Chicago to go play ball there. And now it has be come a race issue with hiring Coach Groce.  I would walk away from this one now and wait for a program with less issues.

FWIW, someone from Chicago already bought the domain name firejohngroce.com

http://who.godaddy.com/WhoIs.aspx?domain=firejohngroce.com&isc=cjcdplink

Looks like it was snagged-up last night.
