I don't know if there is enough pull there to actually change anything. There are only two BOT members bent on hiring a black guy regardless of circumstance, and they got outvoted on the Beckman hire before when they pulled this BS. If the others want Groce, they'll ram it right past Montgomery and the other one.

I don't know Beckman's background...but I can see this Montgomery has twice used "2nd Tier" to reference Groce..so he's positioning for the other Trustees that Illinois is settling for a 2nd tier coach, not a prime candidate, so why does it have to be a 2nd tier white coach?

Wanna throw more on this pile?

A pretty strong rumor is turning up with some of my U of I friends that has Craig Robinson, Michelle Obama's brother, is now on some of the BoT list of desirable coaches.

It also came up recently on the Illinois message board, but they were not connecting dots yet...

So....add Craig Robinson's name to the mess.

Illinois sucks....

He had quite the jump shot in the warehouse basketball game from season one of The Office. So maybe it will work.

Firstly congratulations to the Ohio Bobcats on a great season and great showing in the NCAA Tournament...you've been doing a lot better than the Illini recently.

Anyway, It's common consensus among Illini fans that Groce is not the right fit for the U of I. As you know our AD has already hired a coach from your conference for football, Beckman from Toledo. This was seen as a bad hire, like a last choice, and our AD is under much fire for that already. Groce was around 6th on our list of possible hires, and as you can see we have been turned down by Shaka and Stevens already, and it's not looking good on our end.

But thankfully for you Ohio fans, if the administration listens to the fans, you will get to keep your coach. Many Illinois fans point to Simeon HS coach as a possible candidate, or possibly Kendall Gill, a former Illini player and NBA player. No coaching experience but at least he bleeds orange and blue.

Hopefully you get to keep your coach, and the Illini can find a better fit. Not that Groce is bad, because he's clearly done a good job at the end of the season for you guys.

Anyway that's a typical Illini fans view on the subject.

Cheers, and good luck next year, you should have another solid team.

Illinoisfan, at this point it's painfully obvious to the entire country that you are not going to get any of your top choices.  So instead of trying to save face why not examine from simply a basketball perspective the qualifications of the candidates.  I mean Kendall Gill over John Groce, c'mon besides where they went to school how can you even begin to justify that one.  I don't think any of these leftover candidates I've heard Illinois fans talk about even come close to Groce when it comes down to actual coaching.  Do you guys really want to win on the basketball court or just win in the court of public opinion?

So you would prefer to take a former Illini and NBA player WITH NO COACHING EXPERIENCE over a guy that just put our insignificant little program on the national stage? And has us set up for another run next year?!

And you would prefer a high school coach?! Man oh' man, as a Chicago resident and current employee of the University of Illinois, I am truly shocked and confused.

While Groce is great for Ohio, he would not transfer over to that at Illinois.

Groce has a 34-30 record in MAC conference play, now imagine that in the Big Ten, he can't win the conference tournament for an autobid as easily as he can in the MAC, and it simply won't happen that way.

Groce is an option of course, but most Illini fans prefer Gill or Simeon Head Coach.

Don't take any of this as flame...since your team has clearly been better this year, and i wouldn't begin to insult another team, espescially one who made it so far into the tournament.

I'm just trying to inform you on what the average Illinois fan thinks, if you even care, but i think it's relavent to you since it has to do with your head coach.

Ugh, this should not be what is on the main message board of a team that was just bounced from their second sweet-16 in 50 years.

Bounced less than a week ago, I might add. So happy we got to celebrate the good run.

Fair points. And I think you've just illustrated a discussion that many of us have been having on this board. Do you make a decision based on love or money?

Groce loves Ohio and Ohio loves him.

U of I does not love Groce, but that's where the money is at.

The tipping point, in my opinion, is where do you have the best chance to get to a Final Four? That's an easy one to answer.

Illinois fans are so in denial about the status of their program it is sad.

For the Illinois poster, if you get John Groce, you are getting a damn good coach.  If your fans and area high school coaches rebel, then you'll end up with what you deserve.

I thank Groce for a great few years.  I wish him the best.  But, honestly, it will be tough to root for Groce at Illinois (like I do for Grobe and Wake Forest) due to the bizarre reactions of Illinois' "fans".

Yes, I think you are right.

Clearly he is loved at Ohio
At Illinois not be loved or even accepted in the start, he would have to earn that.

I guess it's his decision, we all just get to watch.

The sad part is that they think this is their new head coach:

Illini players tweeting they want interim head coach Jerrance Howard made head coach:

Quote:expand_more

The freshmen sent out a series of tweets supporting Howard for their head coach on Tuesday evening. Illinois' players, it's worth pointing out, also tweeted they would support whoever is hired to replace Bruce Weber.

Freshman Nnanna Egwu wrote, “Last two workouts have been great with coach Howard. He would make a great head coach. They might as well make him our new head coach”.

Freshman Mike Shaw wrote, “We just wanna hoop! Give him a chance!! Workouts have been great! Looking forward to a bright future.. #ILLINI."

Freshman Tracy Abrams wrote, “Let J. Howard run the show.”

Freshman Myke Henry wrote, “I think they might as well just let jerrence (sic) become the head coach it's taking to long to figure out!!”

Freshman Devin Langford wrote, “Illinois head coach need to be Jerrance howard fa sho!!!!!!!”

Good post. Strange all of those behind Howard are Freshman.

Illini fans would be content with Howard, both of us will cross our fingers for that.

The more we hear about this situation, the more I like it.  So Illinois has no prez, BOT wants a minority coach, Groce clearly isn't black, Illini fans don't want Groce, Illini players want Howard, McDavis offers to double Groce's salary with an 8-year extension, etc.  I'm trying to not get my hopes up, but it seems that things are swinging in our favor.  I just hope the situation is resolved either way by the end of the day tomorrow so everyone can move on.

It all sounds good, but remember: No Illini fans wanted Beckman either, and we ended up being stuck with him.

Just hope it's different this time, for both of our teams sake.
