Unless the individual did something that would warrant it being re-voked and from what I understand, Jacobs did nothing but play by the rules, his scholarship should have continued to be honored.

That being said I too realize "the game" and "the rules" have changed. The money being paid to coaches, the strains on budgets, the pressure to "get to the next level" and all that goes with it, have made the Ethan Jacobs' of the world "expendable", not only here at OHIO, but if far too many other colleges as well. Sad situation, especially for a kid that by all accounts did everything the right way.

Didn't the NCAA recently approve the granting/signing of multiyear (up to 4-year) scholarships?

I am but with measurable progress.  Measurable progress is sport is very hard to define.

Sure.  If you earn a scholarship and keep your grades up and stay out of trouble, why not?

Even the top 5 programs have kids who don't play because other players are better.  I don't think you pull those kids scholarships.  That's just me though.

Thank you for pointing that out, Jeff.

I like John Rhodes as well as anyone else here, but Dustin probably had more to do with the huge strides that KVK made than Rhodes did.

Those exist. By-and-large, if you continue to meet credit-hour and GPA requirements academic scholarships (or at least the ones I was on at OHIO) are automatically continued, out to 4 years.

Yep those types of academic scholarships already exist. For that matter, I was given an academic scholarship to attend Wright State for my undergrad. Not only was it automatically 4 years, but I actually took 4.5 years to finish my engineering degree and it covered it for the entire time (I believe it was covered up to 5 or 6 years pending GPA and course work).

if an academic scholarship has stipulations based on academic performance then there should be nothing wrong with an athletic scholarship having stipulations based on athletic performance, right?

I'm a pretty bright guy but after nearly flunking out of pre-med my freshman year it was pretty obvious that if the science department had a bench I would be riding it for the next 3 years and I probably wouldn't even get into a Caribbean med school. I wasn't on scholarship, but if I was I would have lost it because I didn't meet expectations. Same should go  for athletics, if expectations aren't met, for whatever reason, a change has to be made.

and a change can be for the best, I switched to a major I was passionate about, got to stay in Athens for 5 years, and managed to graduate with honors. Maybe a change will do Jacobs some good too.
