73, boy you bring back bad memories . . . the Payne transfer was painful and marked the end of an era.  Cat4ever, it's very hard to figure out cause and effect in the Payne-Snyder thing.  I was told at the time that Snyder retired because he was very frustrated with the attitudes of the elite players that he was finally able to recruit because of the great success his teams were having.  Apparently, Payne and a few others (Slappy, etc.) were in the first wave of the modern prima donna, cry-baby athletes and Gentleman Jim after successfully recruiting them couldn't stand their attitudes and decided he'd had enough.  His great skill prior to this was spotting the "under the radar" talented kid with great motivation that he would "coach up" and make into a great player.  Those that arrived thinking they were God's gift to the athletic world were not his cup of tea.   Now, there were some exceptions -- Mike Haley, of the '64 Elite 8 team -- was heavily recruited, but he was not a prima donna kid.  He was a hardworking Southeastern Ohio guy who was very coachable.  It wasn't until that last year or so, though, the Snyder was able to recruit multiple high-profile recruits at the same time.  It was a great irony that his great success lead to his downfall and decision to retire a little earlier than he had originally plan.  At least that's the story as I heard it back in the day.

My synapse-deprived memories also recall this scenario with Ulice and Larry Slappy.  Good call, OCF......you win the right to buy an adult beverage if you can't answer the question "are you a turtle".

One could say Snyder is a crybaby and a quitter, then. Players wouldn't say "how high?" if he said jump? Got a little hard for him? Bail.

Akron to Chaminade? Now that's a change of scenery.

I've sometimes wondered why more kids didn't go to Hawaii when they had an athletic opportunity there. To get college, room and board paid there for four years sounds too good to pass up. But I suppose traveling back and forth would be a pretty big expense and would be tough for family.

Plus at least for b-ball I don't think anyone takes Hawaii schools that seriously.  Chaminade pops up once in a while at its own tourney, none of the schools out there make any kind of post-season tourney with any regularity.  It's sort of like getting a psychology or law degree from a Caribbean school.  A real lack of cred.

What a sensitive and understanding reply to a complex psychological and emotional situation.  Jim Snyder gave his all for Ohio University for multiple decades as a student, player and coach.  As I said, this situation was tinged with irony.  It's even a little hard to understand, particularly from today's perspective of bloated coaching salaries, ESPN 24 -hour-a-day sports babble, and win-at-any-cost mentality.  But, to label the greatest Ohio basketball coach of all time a "quitter" is something akin to bobcat blasphemy.  It may not be the unforgivable bobcat sin, but it's got to be among the seven deadly ones.

You are the ONE to say.

Take a walk in another man's shoes.  Extreme racial tensions, raised fists at the Games, Viet Nam, May 4th, wildcat strikes, campus riots, Ohio enrollment heading towards the toilet, Watergate, polyester suits, 24/7 visitation and arguably the 2nd worst decade for the USA in the 20th Century. Society changed really fast back in the day and questioning authority was the rage.

Compared to the 70's what do today's coaches and players have to deal with--the battery on their cell phone running low on juice?

It's almost too easy sometimes.

Getting back on track here. The Matt Stainbrook to Xavier rumor has been picking up steam recently.

I don't know why Xavier would want him, but Chris Mack has done well with lumbering oafs before (Kenny Frease) so maybe he can get something out of Stainbrook as well.

Good catch. I wonder if Kenny Frease grew out his hair and wore the rec specs if anyone would be able to tell the two apart?

No idea.  But Christian should give him a call.  His defense needs some work, but he can get up there.  He would be a great rebounder in the MAC, and we need somebody to clean the boards.

he's an amazing athlete, just not very good at basketball lol...would be a good addition in the MAC though no doubt as he'd out-athlete everyone.

We weren't great this year because we had great athletes. We were great because we had great basketball players.  As soon as I saw the comment above about his defense needing work I thought, no thanks.

Must be some sort of convergence...sign of impending doom...But I agree, again, with this thought of Van's (which I stated during season).

He's not atrocious on defense, but he's not Ron Metta World Peace Artest either.

He's an athletic big that can rebound like crazy and run the floor.  In the MAC, over the course of a season, he could be very, very good.  I'd take him in a heartbeat.

On the bench for a season since as a transfer he'd need to sit out. Then replacing some of the major minutes we'd be losing with Keely and Baltic graduating.
