I also will vote for Dale Bandy. Might not want to go on the road after the young kids, but he can flat out coach the X and the O.s

Seriously, is he still in coaching at any level?  Is he living back in Portsmouth.  I've totally lost track of him over the years.  He certainly was a very good assistant coach under Snyder.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!   I remember with a shudder when hockey at Bird outdrew hoops at the Convo, and a propensity to only recruit 6'5".

Last I heard OCF he was coaching at a community college in Texas.

Believe you missed a key word in my statement.  He was a good ASSISTANT coach.  Kind of like Knorr, in that regard.

Thanks for the info.  I always thought he was a good man.  I remember at one GWC luncheon when he explained a match-up zone.  He got out the caulk and did an excellent job of explaining it to a general fan-type audience.  He was obviously a good teacher, because even I understood it!

Love that idea! I am just not sure how Cleveland area coaches would react to him trying to recruit the area.  His player procurement techniques have caused some issues with area coaches.  He knows the game and builds great relationships with his kids, that I think would serve the program well.

According to today's Messenger, Christian will bring Bill Wuczynksi with him. Wuczysnki was his top assistant at TCU.

I'm not surprised with the hiring of Coach Wuczynski, since he has three years of recruiting experience at Loyola-Chicago.

Speculation from the Illini site

No, the 40-year-old Groce isn’t yet a big name. That wasn’t Mike Thomas’ aim in identifying the school’s 17th men’s basketball coach. This whole thing was about finding the right fit.

It’s why Groce has hired a pair of assistants — Dustin Ford and Jamall Walker, who both came from Ohio University — who share an intimate knowledge of how he operates. It’s why Ohio assistant Ramon Williams likely will be on the staff in some capacity, and why the third assistant will be someone who has worked with Groce before.

I have the "opportunity" to see them once a year in the Nutter Center as it is. Trust me, it's not all that exciting.

Also, sounds like Groce is pretty much taking our entire staff with him. That....sucks.

I can see why people want members of the old staff retained, but I really think it's better to let the new coach hire his own guys. Often, when you inherit staff from your predecessor, the relationship isn't as good or as close. We need cohesion and the staff speaking with one voice and one direction. Having Coach Christian hire the staff that he feels most comfortable with is the best and fastest way to make that happen.

From what I have seen and read, Coach Christian can flat out coach. He's a real X's and O's guy. Even in college basketball there are more than a few guys who have an older grizzled assistant on the bench who bails them out in a game where they are getting outcoached. This won't happen to Coach Christian. He strikes me as a guy who uses assistants to bounce ideas off and mold players skill sets, not to use in real time game X's and O's capacity.

Some 20 years ago, I was coaching high school basketball. There were more than a few hot shot coaches who had a grizzled old guy on the bench who would bail them out in a jam. Otherwise they would win with talent and yell at the officals to look in charge. Coach Christian is in charge. Heck if he could win at Kent and even be competetive at TCU, this speaks volumes.  His staff will do just fine, the best recruiter is the game time performance of the coach!

I really like these thoughts and agree with them for the most part.  My primary concerns with the coaching change were that we don't lose anyone as a result from the current team (so far so good), and that we're able to recruit very well to fill the shoes of the 4 departing seniors (Cooper, Offutt, Baltic, Keely) to maintain the program.  That means the guys JC brings in better be able to recruit with him.

Lets go get Brian Bidlingmyer. Great recruiter with state of Ohio ties.

Does anyone remember how long it took Groce to name his staff?  With recruiting season warming up again, I'm interested to see who gets the jobs.

I would think that a coach would want to both keep an existing staff member or two and bring along one or two of his current staff.

Yes

Groce came in and had AHoltmann in a day  and then added Jamaal  and Dustin quickly. Open evaluations started July 5th with JG and CH covering the Ohio and Indiana tourneys till the 17th. Dustin and Jamal got in pretty quickly on the Open Eval period. . Oddly enough the announcement came on the 17th at the end of the eval period but they were all scrambling to see players which resulted in the first class of now to be seniors.

Rumor I heard and tweeted by Arkley as to third assistant. Well, maybe not the 'third assistant,' but the third name.
