I know nothing of the terms.  But shouldn't we be able to sell easy about 5000 pops at $7 per with the University (Athletics) getting about $5 per?  (Assumes expanded beyond Rohr Room.)  Shouldn't this be worth 150-200k a year.  Sorta free cash.

Gots to do it.

8k per game gets us near 250k new revs.

That's kinda what I was thinking.  I brought a few friends to The Convo this year that aren't OU grads or ticket holders.  In both cases, the question of "why can't they sell beer" came up.  We've debated on it for years, and I don't see the moral dilemma.  Places like Dayton, Wright State, Cincinnati all sell beer in the arena until the horn sounds for the beginning of the second half.  At that point, they pull the taps. They only sell two per person per trip.  Unless someone is on an outright mission, there isn't enough time to get completely wasted.  Beyond that, those that want to are already getting wasted before they come into the game.  That "free cash" as Monroe calls it would pay for A LOT of things that the men's and women's basketball (and volleyball and wrestling) teams can really use for improved facilities in The Convo.  In the times of searching for more revenue sources, I really don't see where this is not a no brainer.

We are easing into this.  It will only be available in the Tower Club and Rohr Room, and you can't take it out of the rooms to your seat.  This will be available to a small group of people for a short period of time.  I barely have enough time to grab a bottle of water and a bag of popcorn before a basketball game.  I'm probably not coming an hour early to hang out in the Rohr Room just because beer is served.  That is what Broney's is for.  It is a compromise to finally get it into the buildings for the first time.

I suspect that we will see it expand to the rest of Peden and the Convo in future years, but there won't be enough revenue to make much of a difference in the first year.  I'm glad they are moving in the right direction.  It will not be a big cash stream until it is expanded to the entire venue.  Some folks will complain non-stop, but Regular Joe likes to have a beer while watching a football game.  This will be one more way to simultaneously increase the fan experience and increase revenues.

The revenue comes from the sponsorship fee - not selling a few longnecks and 6 oz glasses of vino. Expect to see some bev company logos splattered around on programs, concourse, and maybe............The New Hanging Scoreboard?

Why.....?

They just carry vodka in styrofoam cups now....what would be the point?

I was so humoured by Paul Baron as we were sitting in a Champs watching a game and I asked if he wanted a drink at which point he reached in his jacket pocket,  pulled out a flask and poured a bit into his Coke and remarked something about "doing it Athens style"

University of Akron Board of Trustees approve beer sales in the main seating areas of Infocision Stadium starting this fall.

http://www.gozips.com/sports/fball/2012-13/releases/20120502idfusm

Wine and hard liquor will continue to be for sale only on the Club and Suite levels of the stadium.

Press release does not mention beer sales at the JAR.

This strikes me as 'kron alcohol consumers will be able to watch a football game if they want to.'  'kron football definitely secondary to alcohol.

Our students can't handle alcohol.  No way should we sell beer stadium wide.  They'll burn down Peden or something.

Interesting comment.   Are you saying that we attract a different kind of student and less responsible student than Akron, Kent, BG and Cincinnati?  If so, then all of the platitudes coming out of Cutler about the quality of the OU student body are just lies then.  Is that really what you're saying?

That all depends on how many students from other schools are in attendance.

On the other hand, it's an opportunity for the liqour agents to observe under age consumption behavior in the open rather than have to skulk through bars and infiltrate private parties.  it could do wonders for compliance with the OU alcohol policy by weeding out miscreants.

I've seen grown men that can't handle their alcohol.  What's your point?  Not like the students would be able to afford $7 beers anyway.

OK.  Settle down fellas.  I was just having some fun coming off the whole Palmerfest fire thing.

My vote would be for the north endzone area to become beerlandia sponsored by Yuengling.

Settle down? OCF hasn't even started chiming in with his outcries of agism yet. OCF, I'm only assuming that you're against agism for all ages based on your previous posts...

If that's in reference to the picture above your post, then OHIO didn't technically lose that trade, since this...person has no formal association with our fine school (i.e. she's not a student, just one more visiting POS, just like all of the Halloween arrests). If its about Athens County, then you're correct, since she clearly missed the turn-off to the landfill outside of Nelsonville.

10% of the general population is alcoholics and they ruin it for everyone else that wants to drink responsibly. They hide in the fraternities or sit in the Pub at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. OHIO has more students on campus therefore more alcohol dependent students to go around. Think of the fests; most of those students go to drink responsibility but then are pressured into consuming more. It has nothing to do with academic quality as drinking problems are a huge issue across all campuses. The difference is Ohio has a vibrant campus life thus more kids on campus and drinking. Ohio should be using its student fees to offer not just athletics but weekend getaways to give the students something else to do other than High Fest.

Good link Ted.  My takeaway from this as it applies to OU is that the university, like BG, should make beer available to all in the stands.   It certainly would provide an opportunity to exercise responsible social behavior by those of legal age.  This and the discussions of bringing back spring fest or something like it would be a step in the right direction instead of pushing our problems off campus and then expressing outrage when people screw up.  In no way is this an endorsement of the boorish behavior we've seen the last few years during the spring fest season but a recognition that organization of an event, such as Halloween, can have a a mellowing effect and actually provide a fun event for all.

Now it's off the table. I received a letter today stating that they are not going to offer alcohol in the Tower Club or Rohr Room during the next year. It doesn't impact my support or attendance, but I don't agree with the decision. I'll wait to pass judgement until I hear the reason why they decided this. I really hope the Fest Season/party school image was not a deciding factor. At least I can still control my tailgate parties before football games. We won't have a dry event in Tailgreat Park.

I was a little astonished at the first decision myself but the reversal is even more puzzling, by which I mean that had to be a huge, controversial change to begin with.  Now you reverse it before it has been tested.  At least , New Coke actually made it to the market before those guys were convinced of their error.

My issue was with wasn't the alcohol or the image but how it would play out - a select few enjoying a brewski in the stands while everyone else watches?  Not cool.

Word from the OBC is that this was purely a McDavis decision as a result of the Palmerfest situation. This was all set and ready to go until they unexpectedly got the hammer laid down.

VERY disappointing to see this happen. This makes our athletic department look so bush league it's not even funny. How can you release something like this to the public if there is even a shadow of doubt that it won't happen?

I think any aspirations of getting alcohol at games has officially gone out the window. Peden and the Convo will be dry forever, barring a major change in the university's (i.e. President or Board of Trustees) stance.
