Lots and lots of reports of Chris Holtmann being a top candidate for Louisville job. If he goes and Boals takes Ohio back to the dance, should we be concerned that Ohio State comes calling? Or should we be concerned even if Ohio doesn't go dancing?

Aren't you getting about five steps ahead of yourself here? Based on how Toledo is playing right now, getting out of Cleveland alive seems like an ambitious goal for our team.

By now we should all know that that any success a mid-major finds is a double-edged sword. No sense fretting about it in January before any success even happens.

I know it's January and I said "if" Ohio goes back to the dance. I know how talented Toledo is and they are the clear front runner. But obviously, you can't help but think Boals is a viable OSU candidate if Holtmann departs.

I guess my broader point is that isn't worth worrying about. As soon as any high major wants them, the MAC coach is gone and there's nothing we can do about it. Savor the windows of success when they come because in an era of player free-agency and multimillion dollar coaching contracts, every mid-major is one phone call away from rebuilding. That's true no matter what happens at Ohio State. Getting two tournament runs out of any coach is pretty much the ceiling for a MAC school. After that, the coach is as good as gone.

I would have to assume that Boals would be a top 3 candidate right now, without question.

I'd even go on to put Boals on the long list for Louisville.

Anything is possible.

But, from checking a number of sites, he's not close to the top.

Seems Kenny Payne of the Knicks is considered the favorite.

Would Holtmann leave OSU for Lousville? Why? Would there be much of a pay disparity?

I've long thought OSU is definitely a concern, and have hoped OSU would stay sort of OK...not so great that Hotmann could be recruited away, not so bad that Holtmann could be fired.

I wouldn't put much stock in those "reports". Probably more speculation than real reporting. Usually those who know aren't talking, and those who are talking don't know. Beau Bishop on The Fan this morning speculated (not reported) that the job that would really interest Holtmann is Kentucky, if and when it's open. Meanwhile, never underestimate TOSU's resources, which they would surely use if they wish to keep a given coach.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but has Holtmann ever advanced beyond the first weekend of the NCAA tourney?

Well Coach Holtmann was born in Lexington and he grew up just south of the city. He along with his family were big UK fans. One would think if he still missed the Blue Grass State, UK 's arch nemesis would be the last place he would want to go. However, I don't think Coach Calipari is leaving anytime soon, and if you want your ego stroked, no place better than Louisville who feels the magic of the Crum years are way back in the rear view mirror. They have excellent facilities and alums with deep pockets.

We have to face the facts, that even with a loyal alum, the type of money that can be thrown around in Columbus makes anything we can offer chump change, not to mention driving from his home in New Albany to the OSU campus makes things a lot easier for his living arrangements. Dayton couldn't keep Archie Miller from bolting and they can certainly afford to pay more than we can. Let's enjoy how ever long Coach Boals stays, but realize nothing in MAC coaching forever, as Tessio said in the Godfather, "Tell Mike, it was nothing personal just business."

While I hope Boals stays, I will completely understand if he bolts for OSU for a larger contract that we can't afford. Man, it would suck though. But, that hasn't happened yet and we will see what happens.

I don't understand why Holtmann would sign up for THAT dumpster fire. I'm also not sure that school up north will lower itself to hire from the likes of the MAC.

BUT...

I am another voice that hopes the next coaching search is triggered from outside the building and have committed myself to employ the Serenity Prayer.

Ultimately, it's a good thing for the program if ambitious, up and coming coaches see us as a place where they can come to get access to the best jobs in the country. We'd be in a position where three of our last four coaches were hired by Illinois, BC, and Ohio State. Not a bad pitch in a coaching search.

The next time we have an opening, I’m going to fax a fake Tim O’Shea resume to the athletic department. Yes, I said fax. With an amazing cover letter that explains why he’d be the perfect fit for Athens.

I have to think the personalities that fit the program best right now are Pearl and Sampson. Pearl started right up the road at USI over by Evansville and Sampson seems to enjoy and recruit the Midwest. BOTH have the requisite slime and background to associate themselves with UL.

Personally do not think that Holtmann is a bleeding blue fan and would easily consider UL as an option in his home state more out of Ky pride and recruiting footprint, even though Ky has not been producing many players of note the last few years. His problem is that he is too squeaky clean. That does fit with UL's

The one guy who really deserves a shot is just a few years past his prime. Former UL assistant and Denny Crum protogee Scott Davenport is just a bit long in the tooth to be considered. His Bellarmine program is just transitioning to Division 1. He is one of the finest gentlemen in college coaching.

This slimeball sinks every program he's ever been a part of with his slimeball antics. Auburn will regret this decision in the very near future, although Auburn seems to have a high tolerance for slimeballs (see: Pat Dye, Cam Newton, Gene Chizik, Terry Bowden, et al).

Good to see Denny Crum out to say farewell to Coach K on the Goodbye Tour. Lots of replies on the their FanBoars wishing he would come back interim.....and some that wished he would have shaved before they brought him to the YUM. https://twitter.com/ericcrawford/status/14875620717095649...

Will they? They were a complete non-factor in basketball before Pearl and, as you've noted, they don't seem to care when they get busted for breaking rules. Seems like it's a good fit on both sides.

Well...now the tide has turned to the other direction with the same "should we be worried" question coming from it. OSU has now lost 8 in a row and 13 of 14. Particularly if they lose out or only win 1 or 2 down the stretch...You really have to wonder if Holtmann is in jeopardy. The steep decline is startling as they were a solid team at the beginning of the year, being inches away from beating #1 Purdue to go to 3-0 in the Big Ten. Now they are consistently losing in blowout fashion.

So if it happens...should we be worried? I would agree that right now, Boals and his resume would be too much of a stretch hire for the OSU job. But if we win the MAC tourney and show well in the NCAA tourney? I could definitely see it. While the overall record won't blow anyone away, the story would be he came in and turned the program around, made it to the NCAA (and beat Virginia), then lost a player to the NBA and 2 others to high major programs and still got back to the dance.
