News flash:  Monroe was up at 6:30 a.m. PDT to watch that revetting, dramatic 98-71 USA win over France.

For the record, OCF, I respect your opinion (and I had to look up "revetting," though I don't understand it in your context). I think you're really disrespecting our guys, though, by calling them jaded. This clearly means a lot to them.

And I'm with you on events scored by judges and not by more objective means.

Thanks for the clarification.   Perhaps, I was being a bit jaded in calling them jaded, or at least a little curmudgeonry.

For the record, I meant "riveting."  What can I say, I'm so talented that my typos are real words.

I am also growing really tired of the emerging sentiment that if any one makes any money off it, the whole thing is a big sham.  Lots of people work hard to provide entertainment that people want to see, and advertisers want to get involved in...they deserve to make money accordingly.  This does not make them evil nor does it squash any significance of it.  How would you like it if others questioned the significance and validity of what you do every day because of that salary they pay you?  Come on...

We can agree to disagree becaus I think you misunderstand my POV, Andrew.  The IOC is an organization that purportedly exists for a "higher" purpose than athletics (or profit).  Athletics exist everywhere and, like you, I am a fan of almost all of it, although my including soccer in the comments is not a coincidence.  What I am asking is if the Olympics is simply one more of those events, like those you mentioned, what is so special (Question mark).

For you, that "special" piece might be the national rooting interest and that's fine. But if the main point is the annihilation of the opponent at all costs, I think that diminishes the spirit of friendly competition (an Olympic ideal?).

Sorry Bob...I don't really know what you're getting at here.  The main point isn't the annihilation of the opponent, it is to represent your country proudly by faring well in your competition.  I would think the the answer to your question of why are the olympics special should be apparent.

And what do you think would be the result if we took out pro players?

My guess is that our college kids would win by a larger margin against a French team that couldn't use Tony Parker, Boris Diaw, or Nic Batum.

Yes, they would. It's not even a question. I've already explained it in this thread and others have as well. You continue to ignore it. And if you're going to try and burn me, use the correct word. You're looking for "omniscient."

These guys get paid millions upon millions of dollars to play basketball. They're not require to do this and they don't need the stress. Instead, they sacrifice their off-season and play FOR FREE for their country. That selfless act should be celebrated. No, you ungrateful jerks complain about how they shouldn't be there in the first place, whine about how it's not dramatic enough for your tastes, and (in giacomo's latest bout of insanity) scold them for doing it.

At first I thought that the above was an example of incredible...   Then, I remembered that one should not attribute to malice that which is...

I think there's a mistake.  I never advocated our collegians (pre-prima donnas) against the rest of the world's similarly aged.  I want our collegians against the best of the world regardless of age.  (Others advocated speculated on college vs. college, but I never did.)  My model is Miracle On Ice, our collegians (essentially) vs. their pros.

Don't agree?  No problem.  That doesn't make me wrong.  Opinion does not equal fact.

Did all you who disagree root for the big school when Jimmy Chitwood and team were laying it down in Hoosiers?

Pros?  Way over-pampered.  Through my heart runs the greatest cheer ever--Akron hates you! Akron hates you!--against the thought of cheering on such as GameFiveHeQuit.

Literally, I carried a dictionary everywhere I went at the University which I attended Athens, Ohio before you were born.  You don't want to challenge me on vocabulary, posts about 'memes' and 'favorite writers' notwithstanding.

No need to get teed off in response, JSF.   My posts here are mostly just goofing around and trying to get people to think.  You're smart enough to know when I'm serious, when I'm not and what part is hyperbole.

Also, everything that is posted on the 'net and twitter is terribly important.

My "latest bout of insanity" simply brought up the aspect of NBA players with 100 million contracts possibly getting hurt and what about that obligation to the team that's paying them.

I don't think our current collegians would win today, but for the simple fact that the best players leave for the NBA at 19. Back in the day our best players stayed until they were 21 or 22. Call me crazy.

I'm in favor of keeping the USA pro players in the Olympics.

So you want a once-in-a-lifetime event? I don't understand. Why would we intentionally not send our best when everyone else does?

JSF--I understand that most here clearly want to send our best (top pros).  I'm just a guy who sees no thrill in thrashing everyone, save for maybe having a slight scare in the title game...though probably not.

I like the underdog drama of Miracle and Hoosiers.  Apparently dang few others do; the 'nuke 'em bigtime' choice is vastly favored here.  I'd rather see us lose..once in a while overcome...valiantly, than, yawn, thrash as we all expect.

Still think it is okay to send the best.  I just add basketball to the events I probably will not watch.

This is detoriating into Dominant Force proportions.  This has been a rough offseason for the BA Hoops board.  November can't come fast enough.

Good article from Wilbon. I had never thought they would take their ball and have their own international touney. I always thought Stern et. al. was trying to expand the NBA brand to China, India and Russia and that's why the owners looked the other way when sending their high priced stars to the Olympics and similar events. Could the BRIC countries become a dominant force?

Yep...definitely don't wanna "detoriate."

Agree that I'm looking forward to November, but it could be tougher than you think...depending on which Div. III team we play this year...

I'm waiting for the exciting SEO challenge match in Marietta as we do our return game for their visit to Athens last year!

Not to completely derail this thread, but reading this line got me thinking.  If Ohio wants to build our brand throughout the state, it might actually make some sense to make preseason trips to some of the DII and DIII schools around the state.  Schools like Marietta, Wooster, Baldwin Wallace, Ashland, Findlay, etc could give Ohio the opportunity to be the "big boy" coming to town and potentially grow the fan base.

There's a lot of places around the state where people are O$U fans simply because they know nothing else.  Seeing a team like Ohio in person could definitely start to sway some younger fans, or at least get them to tune into a couple of games.

I always liked what the NBA does with their pre-season.  They play a few games in their own arena, and then they play in other venues across the region.  For example, this pre-season the Cavs will play games in Canton, Champaign, and Cinci, and in the past they've played games in Columbus, Pittsburgh, and a few other cities.  It might not be a bad approach to look at for our own purposes.

I like the idea, too.  And, I'll point out the old Cincinnati Royals of the NBA used to play exhibition games in high school gyms.  I once saw them play in Chillicothe.  As I recall, Jerry Lucas, Oscar Robertson and Wayne "Redchicken" Embry were all on that team.  Quite a collection of talent to play in a high school gym.  I think those games did a lot to increase the following of the Royals.  I believe this game was in the spring of 1964.  Too bad the Royals left for Kansas City in 1972.

Actually given that it was Muncie Central...yeah I did. Did not change the fact that Milan (Hickory ) still won and Central still lost in the Movie version.

speaking of....and not to digress but early auditions for the next  Jimmy Chitwood were last Friday at the home of Hickory. Shooting a shooting video was the order of the day.

How very predictable.  Is anyone entertained by 27, 47 and 83 point wins.

Bring on our college kids vs. their pros so we'll have some drama.

Reality TV is pretty much abysmal in terms of content.  But it's a huge money maker, ratings.  They'd love the prima donna lifestyle.  But for game action  ratings, they'd take our collegians and the struggles instead of this yawner.
