Oh, crap, you're right. Sorry!

At least Wofford has an NCAA win recently...

Ok, I give in.  So Maryland-Eastern Shore, UNC-W, UT-Corpus Christi, Marietta College, UT-Martin, Samford, Morgan State, UNC A&T, Delaware and Norfolk State it is!

UNC-Wilmington and Delaware are members of a higher profile league than the MAC, the CAA.

Like I said, "I give in."  In order to get excited in purchasing tickets for the upcoming season who's team just came off a Sweet 16 run; ended the season playing the Big East, Big 10 and ACC; and returns the entire roster; you must get in the mindset that having Richmond being rumored as your biggest OOC home game and only one game at Memphis as your showcase away game of the year is exciting stuff.  Somehow you must find a thread of excitement to ramp up your level of anticipation.

Unfortunately, while I realize we're a MAC school and all the rest--I was kind of hoping that for maybe just this one year we'd push the needle and add a game or two unlike a status quo type year.  Some games where you didn't have to think, and rethink, why a matchup vs. UNC-W and Delaware is something exciting.  Maybe a little reward to the seniors who showed they could go head-to-head with the big dogs and give them a chance to do it again a few times in their last hurrah as Bobcats.  And maybe it'll be there as the schedule hasn't been officially announced-just rumors.  And like I said, it's probably my fault in that I haven't made the full transition into getting excited about the type of teams we play on an annual basis.  Quite the contrary, I'm am VERY excited about my trip to Penn State coming up.  Don't have to talk yourself into why that will be fun.  But as for me, the drive to Athens for the Norfolk State game a few weeks later will take a little more imagination.  If you want to use some Dick Vitale talk, I like people who aren't afraid to play people in their OOC schedule vs. scheduling "Cup-Cake City."  And while Delaware, etc... may not be cup cakes, they just sound and smell like them.

Now how cool is that schedule?  Texas and Purdue at home.  Not a single fluff OOC game, unless of course those big name teams weren't big names 40+ years ago.

Reatlistically we know:
a.  they won't come here
b.  we can't play murders row every game of the season
c.  the gap between the Texas, Purdue, Ohio State, IU's, etc...  of the world and the MAC has probably widened significantly since then.

All I'm asking for is maybe one cool/high profile holiday/preseason tournament and getting maybe as few as one higher profile home game.  Add Memphis, Richmond, Marshall and the rest of the slate to this and I'd probably shut up and be happy.   That would be what I would consider the minimal acceptable level.   Then again, we may have tried and couldn't pull it off at which point I'd feel bad for asking for something that's not even possible.

Ok, enough is enough from me on this topic.  Gotta get psyched for the Maryland-Eastern Shore game--learn where they're from, who their mascot is, what their colors are and who in the world they play as I've never heard of them.

A few quotes from Arkley's blog today regarding the topic.....
Hoops schedule still unfinished
  •
  •

*If you’re an Ohio basketball fan, you’ve probably been wondering when the schedule for the 2012-13 season is going to be released.   Short answer? When it’s done.

*New head coach Jim Christian and his staff have nearly completed the schedule, but have run into some barriers in filling the last non-conference date.

*The MAC will be going to 18 conference games beginning in 2013-14, which means two less non-con dates for MAC teams.

*What is known about the current make-up of the 2012-13 non-conference schedule is that it is full of home dates, and lacking well-known opponents from power conferences.

*Ohio will have 14 non-conference games this winter, not counting a home exhibition game. Of those 14 dates, 10 home games have already been locked up. If the last open date is also a home game, the ‘Cats will play in the Convo 11 times before even starting MAC play.

*And while there are quality teams on the non-con schedule, there won’t be any true household names. The biggest ‘name’ on the schedule is Memphis, the Conference USA power that is on its way to the Big East. Beyond that, there are intriguing games with the likes of Richmond and Northern Iowa, but no match-ups against teams from the ‘Power 6’ conferences.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jason's able to say things so much more eloquently than I am by using phrases like, "lacking well-known opponents," " there are quality teams...won't be any household names," and "there are intriguing games...but no match-ups against team from the Power 6 conferences."  Sounds so much nicer.

If anything, CG, some of the teams on this schedule were greater powers then than now.  For instance, nobody has even heard of Loyola (Chi) these days, yet in 1969, they were but a few years away from their national championship -- when they beat UCincy in the championship game.  We played them one -- and sometimes two -- times a year back in the day.  Their coach, George Ireland, was a personal friend of Gentleman Jim's.

No, her father's name is John.  Might be an uncle or something, I suppose.

Found this interesting reference on the ever semi-accurate Wikipedia:

"The highlight of Ireland's coaching career occurred in 1963, when he guided the Loyola Ramblers to the national collegiate championship. Ireland's team, led by Jerry Harkness and Les Hunter, compiled a 23-2 regular season record and finished first in the country in scoring. They defeated Tennessee Tech 111-42 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament (still the largest margin of victory in an NCAA tournament game), and after victories overMississippi StateIllinois and Duke, the Ramblers reached the finals, where they faced defending champion Cincinnati. Loyola trailed Cincinnati by 15 points with 10 minutes left in the game, but the Ramblers rallied to force an overtime session, winning the game 60-58 with a last-second tip-in by Vic Rouse.[2][3] Loyola remains the only team in Illinois to have won an NCAA Championship. The 1963 Loyola team also broke racial barriers by being the first NCAA Division I team to have four African American players in the everyday line-up." [Emphasis Mine]

Starting out 5-0 and going 6-2 against that non-league slate was, obviously, very good.  For what it's worth, here's how those teams fared that season overall:

Purdue 18-6 (11-3 in Big 10, 2nd to Iowa)
Ohio State 17-7 (8-6 in Big 10, 3rd)
Loyola 13-11
Northern Illinois 13-12
Texas 11-13
Wisconsin 10-14 (5-9, 6th in Big 10)
Northwestern 9-15 (4-10, 9th in Big 10)
Indiana 7-17 (3-11, last in Big 10)

It's hard to project, but going 4-1 against that collection of Big 10 teams tells me that our guys would've been near the top of that league. None of these teams made the NCAA tournament but back then there were only 25 teams invited. UCLA beat Jacksonville in the finals. New Mexico State beat St. Bonaventure for 3rd place.

I ran into Fuss a few weeks ago and he told me how nearly impossible it is to get the kind of games we want.

I understand what you are saying. I was hoping to get into a big pre-season tournament. That is the most disappointing thing for me.

Got to admit, when you look at this in it's entirety...it's pretty disappointing. Hopefully there's a surprise or 2, but I have a feeling that we know what we've got. We'll see...

Disappointing for the coaches and players, too. They wanted those chances to make an impact.

But at least the Ohio Bobcats will be playing in every one of those games.

This is sort of a play on a current thread but I'm really hoping we can sticky this and keep the original post updated as things change.  This thread is not for discussing games we should schedule or any debates, it is strictly informational on scheduling deals that have already been made.

I get that nobody wants to plays us, but this schedule is a joke.

I also agree that not getting into one of the big pre-season tournaments is the biggest disappointment of them all.

I would love a preseason tournament as bn9 mentioned but outside of that, I don't have much of a beef with the schedule.  I just hope the Convo pretzel maker is in prime form come MAC play in January.

If we do indeed have 11 of 14 at home with the three road games @UMass, @Memphis, @Bracketbuster then we could really set us up for a Murray State type year if we get upset wins @Memphis and @UMass. If we get off to a hot start in the MAC and pile up a 20-1 record when bracketbusters are announced we could perhaps draw  Creighton as the top bracketbuster game.  If we take care of businss the bracketbuster game will be about seeding and not atlarge bid.  Having the kind of year like Murray State had last year where we climb into the top 25.

I'll have what he's having...

In all seriousness, though, it might be possible. I have a hard time seeing us get a "W" at Memphis, but crazier things have happened. If things go according to what we think, we're at least looking at 3 road games...
- Memphis
- Robert Morris
- UMass

Each one of those will be an absolute battle to escape with a win. I know everyone's complaining about the schedule (myself included)...but those are some darned tough road games.

The important thing is, they are all winnable road games.  In year's past, we'd end up playing KU or something like that in a game that was pretty likely not winnable in the opponent's barn.  I think sweating the schedule too much is a little over the top unless there's someone who knows about what goes into getting one of the games we all want OUr team to play on the schedule.  I for one, am clueless in this case.
