Bowling Green just dropped an 80-66 decision to IUPUI. Ouch. I honestly thought BG might have a chance to be really competitive this year. Now, not so much.

I'm curious what gave you that thought.

A pretty solid core group returning from a team that had 3 wins over teams that got NCAA Tournament bids last year (Detroit, Temple and Ohio.) A good bit of height in the interior (2 players are 6' 10"). And I thought they just might be a team that surprises some people. I wasn't thinking they were gonna make the NCAA Tournament, but I thought they'd be much better than losing to Cleveland State and IUPUI.

Miami has a solid 4 point lead at home against Grambling, who Ken Pomeroy has listed as team #347 out of 347.  Cleveland State beat them by nearly 50.

Edit: Correction, 2 minutes into the second half and Grambling is up 4.

Holy crap, it's a 27-0 run by Miami.  It was 37-29 and now it's 37-56.

The MAC's descent seems permanent now.  Can't hold on to good coaches.  Small crowds.  No TV.  Marginal players.  I don't see any of that changing.

I hope we are all prepared for Ohio to lose 5 or so MAC games.  We have everyone back on a team that.....lost 5 MAC games last year.  Not sure why anyone thinks this year will be any different.  We will live and die by the 3 and that means we'll lose several games just because we are cold from the outside.  Just hope we will be the hot team in March.

But, I digress.  I don't even try to talk up the MAC anymore.  Its sad.

Should be interesting to see what happens in football.  The MAC has had a great year.  But, that probably means Kent, NIU, Ball State, and etc. will soon be searching for new coachs.

(Sigh)

We should be better and the conference is worse. That's why.

Nobody holds onto good coaches.   They are always looking to a higher job until they reach one of the top jobs.  The problem with the MAC is that for the most part we haven't hired good coaches.  You get what you pay for.  The MVC loses a lot more coaches than we do.

Well, I hope you are right.  Don't get me wrong, I think we can be really good.  But, we'll take out lumps in the MAC like all MAC favorites seem to.  I do hope Johnson can show more.  And I am looking forward to seeing Kadeem Green play.  I hope he can add some needed inside scoring and prescence.  I guess I didn't realize we have Green for 3 years.

Not to mention we have a coach with a history of winning a whole lot of games in the MAC.

Plus, with basketball budgets falling behind other top mid major leagues, there is no question that has really hurt.

This is by far the #1 reason the MAC fell on hard times.  There were some bad coaching hires but your pool of available hires and you ability to retain the good coaches you have is directly related to the amount of money you are willing to spend.  When you go cheap you get cheap.

JSF hit my thoughts exactly with this thread.  After I saw some of the scores from the weekend, I was thinking "REALLY!!??" you lost to them?

The go cheap/get cheap comment leads me to ask then, how does MAC football seem to get better coaches?  It's obvious given the year the MAC as a whole is having that many programs including OUrs are on the rise.  Why not hoops?  It would seem basketball budgets would be smaller as a whole, and thus much easier to grow to get to a competitive level.

There's are what...1/3rd as many D1 coaching jobs as D1 basketball jobs?  That'll make your coaching talent go a lot further

Would it be feasible, or permissable by the MAC, to join the A10 in hoops (not that they need another team) and MAC in all other sports?  That would appear to be a good place for our basketball program.  Temple & UMASS were allowed, why not OHIO?

There's a big difference between joining a conference and breaking away from one.

I think GC's scenario is against NCAA rules. We'd have to join the Atlantic 10 for all sports and be football only for MAC. I can't see that happening, as much I would love it.

Better night tonight for the MAC!! Not taking on any powerhouses, but some solid W's...

Ball State defeats Wofford
Kent State defeats Chicago State
Central Michigan defeats Olivet
WMU beats Loyola-IL
Akron beats UNC-Ashville

Only loss was Buffalo vs. Western Illinois.

Another score: EMU over Eastern Illinois.

7-1 day for the MAC. Either it's bad competition or things are looking up!!

MAC still winless vs. the Ivy League as Buffalo loses to Yale tonight.

On the brighter side, WMU (vs. Maryland Eastern Shore) and EMU (vs. IPFW) picked up wins, albeit vs. relatively poor competition.

The MAC is back to .500 at 18-18, although a fair share of those (five, I think) are against non-Division I teams. Seven games on the slate today and I'd say six of the seven are winnable.
