Bama and Sears beat #1 Houston Saturday. UVa and BVP get Houston this Saturday, Dec.17.

Before Sears & BVP, what Bobcat transfer went to have the best success in our program's history? Sears & BVP are solidifying their spots as #1 & #2, right? Have we ever had anyone transfer "up" and be a key piece on a national contender before?

Not to a contender, but Ryan Taylor went on to have a pretty darn solid career after one year here under Saul.

In answer to Andrew's question I submit Ulice Payne as my candidate for #1 transfer up.

Good call, OCF. . . Marquette and Al McGuire won the national title in, I believe, Payne's senior season.

I knew you'd come thru OCF. I had no idea about this guy, but it is a great pick considering Marquette won the National Championship in his Junior season 1977. Bonus fact, the following year they got bounced in the first round by Fiami.

It looks like he was a 6th man of sorts, playing 15.6 minutes per game on the national championship team before becoming a starter his senior season.

Either the Marquette guy or Jason Carter at Xavier. Similar numbers, but Marquette dude on a better team.

Ulice was in one of my classes way back. It was clear not only did he have basketball skills but was a true student. His accomplishments are extensive.

Glad he's getting a bit of attention. I suspect his lack of athleticism makes him a stretch at the NBA level, but he's talented, strong, and had the best change of pace game of any guard I've seen at OU save for Jason Preston. Probably not a coincidence they played together.

Anybody think there's any chance he's being listed as a potential NBA draft pick without Alabama's schedule?

That's interesting, mid70s. I remember that he was a good student, but I never personally met him. I did see him play for OHIO. The reason he transferred, according to what I was told, is that he didn't like Snyder's style of coaching. Snyder, who was good a taking the diamond-in-the-rough type player, had more trouble with the highly ranked recruit. There were some exceptions, as he worked well with Mike Haley, who O$U wanted, but Mike was a local kid being from Portsmouth. Snyder was, like a lot of coaches of that era, somewhat authoritarian in how he ran his program. I was told that as a result highly ranked recruits like Ulice Payne and Larry Slappy had trouble relating to him once they arrived on campus. I will have to say that this information comes from one person, but a person who was close to the program.

Yes, in fact I think there were a few NBA mentions of him last year.

Anyone remember a few Bobcat fans yelling " Yoo-liss" during the late Bandy years after Payne got the championship ring at Marquette?

100% - heard many rumblings within the student section that they hoped Sears wouldn’t declare for the draft early like Rollins did.

Luckett and Snyder seemed to get along fine. How about Slappy's results at Richmond?

Payne had the highest RPM on his jump shots of just about anyone I ever saw chuck it up.

Watching Alabama-Memphis, Sears the high scorer for Bama at half with 12. Fraschilla has to no surprise mentioned Ohio a few times.

The Luckett situation was a little different. He'd been recruited by OHIO via a very influential alumnus since he was in grade or middle school or maybe since he was in diapers. I can't actually remember the details. As a result, he had much different mind-set (apologies to the late Larry Hunter) coming in than most high-profile recruits.

Didn't catch last night's game, but I bet Franny included something about Court St. Something like, "I'm sure Sears enjoyed Court St."

Sears finished with 18 last night. He had 5 big points down the stretch. Memphis looked pretty darn good for an unranked team. They refused to go away, despite foul trouble and injuries. Alabama looks like a complete team that can make a deep tourney run. How cool would it be to see them get matched up with UVA deep in the tourney?

Or get upset by Kent State in the first round!

No one can question Sears' decision to transfer. Working out well for him.

If anyone is questioning Sears's decision to transfer, that's mighty selfish and not looking at what is best for the player/student. He is back in his home state where his parents are able to see him play regularly in person. His dad is a teacher and his mom is a nurse, and while they want to travel to many of his games, that's pretty difficult with their schedule, the distance, and the financials.

Now, Sears is closer to family, is playing and leading a top 5 team nationally, and is seeing his stock rise in terms of the NBA. Whether or not you choose to cheer for him at his next school is understandable, but if you are questioning his decision, that's incredibly self-centered.
