The Million Dollar question regarding our annual no-name home schedules:

1.  We Want to, but it's Not Possible
2.  We Don't Want to and Aren't Trying
3.  We Don't Have the Networking Connections with other big programs to pull it off.

Answer #1 is what we're told, but for a million bucks I'm not sure which is truly the right answer??

Honestly a couple of Butler type basketball seasons and a couple of Northern Illinois football seasons and the Convo would be sold out nearly every game the students were in session, and Peden would have to undergo an immediate expansion. It is amazing how fast the bandwagon can get going, or how quickly the wheels can fall off the wagon, if things go bad.

I remember watching then mighty DePaul and Ray Meyer lose in 2OT (or was it 3OT) in one of my first games at the Convo. The victory would help propel the Danny Nee era. I also recall we could have sold 20,000 tickets for the 1986 NIT game against Ohio State, and that was just tickets for Bobcat fans.

We have a large alumni base that lives within a 4hr drive of Athens. It could happen faster than one can imagine if we started firing on all cylinders.

Exactly! We have spent Millions on dorms, building renovations, new scripps, and baker. Whens the last time the Convo was upgraded (other than the locker rooms and floor?). My dad and I sat up in the light green seats way up in the nosebleeds and our seats broke in half. I'm not even heavy. 6-4 160.

We need to seriously consider renovating the seats in the Convo, and add some paint and make the walk up toward the Arena nice.

As for football, I think it would be smart to add 6,000 more seats and enclose the North end to make a horseshoe. We should do it as soon as they work on the indoor practice facility and tear down the student side stands and absolutely redo them.

Not even remotely true, IMO. Keep playing these sort of schedules and what you've seen this year is about as good as it gets. No matter how good we are, the Oaklands and St. Bonaventures of the world aren't exciting the casual fan. Heck, they're not exciting the die-hard fans.

Now football...possibly. We're much closer to selling out Peden than the Convo. Cheifly because, by D1 standards, we have a small football stadium. By those same standards, we have a massive basketball arena. We average only 2,000 empty seats for football. Conversely, we average 7,000 empty seats for basketball. To sell out the Convo, it's going to take Dad's Weekend or a big-time opponent.

I find it hard to believe with all the Ohio Athletic Admin grads out there that networking is an issue.

Perhaps. But we have, what, maybe 2 or 3 OU alumni that work in the athletic department? Most are here 2-3 years and running out the door. That can't help from a networking standpoint, though it does seem Schaus may be here for a while. Our turnover is a huge detriment, both from a coaching and administration standpoint.

Meanwhile top ranked IU played Central Conn ST. today......

THe Big 6 conference members want no part of good mids.

Butler got a date AT Northwestern but still has problems scheduling just as the Zags do ....the nations best mids have to take 2 fers on the road

The lay of the land......and until the NCAA forces the major conferences out of their houses then they should expand the tourney one more day and let 128 in with regular season AND conference tourney champs in the dance. Once that proposal goes up and garners support  the Bigs will come out to our house.

Is that why the Zags got Illinois at home last night? Or per topic of this thread, EMU got Purdue. Unless I missed someting both are in a major conference.

zags are 9 or 10 years into a cycle where they have established themselves as strong enough to get a home and home with a lower BIG team. The fact that Illinois is on the upswing does not bode well for the future of that series.

On the Illinois board they are ecstatic and calling it the biggest win ever but bidding a fond farewell to the series and thanking Dawgs fans.

Will be interesting to see what kind of  home schedule VCU, OHIO, MOrehead, Butler , Xavier and other consisent and somewhat successful March programs continue to get with the mega conferences forming.  I am particularly intrigued to look forward to how San Diego does their schedule and wonder how fast that house of cards falls when Fisher retires

It can be done, it's been done, we just have to have the will to do it. Eastern got Purdue, why can't we?

Didn't Xavier just host Vanderbilt? Heck, when was the last time Dayton hosted a decent team?

Against Ohio state they opened Convo up 2-3 hours early, parents and I were in front row behind basket.

Better question: When will be the next time O$U comes to Athens.  The likely answer is NEVER.  If we couldn't get on their schedule with Groce at Ohio and Matta in Cowtown, the odds of it happening are reeeeally long.

Akron is playing at Creighton today, and Kent State is playing at Xavier today. Ohio needs to schedule playing better teams I believe.

Too lazy to look up date, but I know Danny Nee was the coach and it was a first round NIT game so State was here of no choice of their own. Packed house I believe. Tough 2 days for OHIO as they lost a close game to State, and the night before, arguably the best OHIO womens' team ever, lost a home NCAA first round contest to the Illini.

I looked it up. It was in 1986.

I'd take Dayton's schedule in a heart beat! And last year they hosted #15 Alabama and beat them, as well as hosting Ole Miss.

OCF, you also remember when we played in the "Men's Gym".

Our schedule is brutal, we used to bring in Xavier, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, Purdue and the like. Today I get excited at Oakland! Which have you seen their non-league schedule? They literally play anyone anywhere.

Yes, I remember Grover Center and Men's Gym.  I don't go back farther than that though, despite that on the football forum L.C. thinks I was there when we beat WVU in Athens in 1897!

Bowling Green gets Michigan State one week from today. It will be on ESPNU. I found out from perusing the BG board that there are still a lot of unsold tickets for that game. How pathetic is that?

Michigan State is worth a call. Izzo's a pretty fearless guy, and he follows the "anyone, anywhere" mantra much closer than any other coach of a major basketball program.

Isn't MSU in the middle of some odd scheduling plan where they're playing AT the directionals in football over the next few years as well?  I haven't heard of any reason why they're doing this, but I find it peculiar.  I'd love to know HOW BG landed them for a home game.  It doesn't make any sense.

I believe it really is more a matter of desire, persistence and patience.  Somebody from the Big6 has gotta have the balls to give us a 2-1.  I'd take it!

Oh, sorry about the date of the BG vs MSU game.  Guess I need to learn how to read a calendar!
